सुरभेः f-Ab-s

Today we will look at the form सुरभेः f-Ab-s from रघुवंशम् verse 2-54.

Translation – And how is this pacification of (the anger of) the great sage possible by the gift of ordinary milch-cows? Know that this cow is in no way inferior to Surabhi (the divine cow); that you have attacked her is only through the power of Rudra.

सुरभेः is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सुरभि’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes a class or individual (thing or person) from which a separate class or individual is being distinguished (based on a genus or quality or action or name.)

In the present example ‘गो’ (‘cow’ – represented by the pronoun ‘इदम्’ (‘this’)) is being distinguished from ‘सुरभि’ (‘the divine cow’) based on the quality of being ‘अनूना’ (‘not inferior.’) Hence as per 2-3-42, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सुरभि’ takes a fifth case affix.

‘सुरभि’ gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि – When a short ‘इ’ ending or short ‘उ’ ending term – except for ‘सखि’ – does not have the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा then it gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति – When a ङित् (having the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) सुँप् affix follows, then a अङ्गम् having the घि-सञ्ज्ञा takes the गुण: substitution. Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य the गुण: substitution takes the place of only the ending letter (in this case ‘इ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘सुरभि’।

By 6-1-110 ङसिँङसोश्च – In place of a preceding एङ् (‘ए’, ‘ओ’) letter and the following short ‘अ’ of the affix ‘ङसिँ’ or ‘ङस्’, there is a single substitute of the former (एङ् letter.)

  1. 1. In the first verse of which Chapter of the गीता has the सूत्रम् 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते (used in step 1) been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते has been used in the form कर्मणः (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कर्मन्’, पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse –

Here बुद्धिः is being distinguished from ‘कर्मन्’ based on the quality of being ‘ज्यायसी’ (‘superior’.) Hence as per 2-3-42, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कर्मन्’ takes a fifth case affix.

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – इदं च सूत्रं बुद्धिप्रकल्पितापायमाश्रित्यापादानप्रकरणे भाष्ये प्रत्याख्यातम्। Please explain.
Answer: As per the महाभाष्यम् we can manage without the सूत्रम् 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते। The reasoning is as follows –
We can consider the process of distinguishing (one thing from another) as a mentally construed अपाय: (distancing) and the सूत्रम् 1-4-24 ध्रुवमपायेऽपादानम् itself may be used to assign the designation अपादानम् (and hence the fifth case affix by 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी।) Therefore the सूत्रम् 2-3-42 पञ्चमी विभक्ते is not necessary.

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विश्राणन’ (used in the form विश्राणनात् (पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) in the verse)?
Answer: The affix ‘ल्युट्’ is to derive the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विश्राणन’ – derived from the verbal root √श्रण् (श्रणँ दाने १०.६३) as follows –

By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    ‘श्राणि’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

श्राणि + ल्युट् । By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।

‘श्राणन’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘वि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
‘विश्राणन’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः has been used in the verse in the form प्रहृतम् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रहृत’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’।

By 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः – The affix ‘क्त’ may be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, without restriction to the time frame (past, present or future.)
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः। And 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘ऋ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘हृ’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

‘हृत’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
‘प्रहृत’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a seventh case affix in the form अस्याम् used in the verse?
Answer: The use of a seventh case affix in the form अस्याम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इदम्’, स्त्रीलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च – A seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used to denote अधिकरणम् (location), provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
Note: ‘इदम्’ (which is qualifying ‘गो’) gets the designation अधिकरणम् by the सूत्रम् 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the agent/object – of an action subsisting in the agent/object is called अधिकरणम् (location.) In the present example, ‘इदम्’ (which is qualifying ‘गो’) is the कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the agent युष्मद् (used in the form त्वया) – of the action प्रहृतम् subsisting in the agent. Hence ‘इदम्’ gets the designation अधिकरणम् (location.)

The form अस्याम् is derived as follows –
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter ‘म्’ gets replaced.
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
Since we are deriving a feminine form, we have to add the affix ‘टाप्’ to ‘इद’ using 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्।
By 7-3-116 ङेराम्नद्याम्नीभ्यः।
By 7-3-114 सर्वनाम्नः स्याड्ढ्रस्वश्च। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, augment ‘स्याट्’ joins at the beginning of the affix ‘आम्’।
By 7-2-113 हलि लोपः।

    6. How to say this in Sanskrit?
“The truth is better than silence.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर’ for ‘better.’
