Meditation 3–IDAM SHARIRAM - This Body
ॐश्रीगणेशायनमः।श्रीगुरुभ्योनमः।About meditation we should pay attention to two things. One, preparation for meditation is more important than the actual meditation itself. Except for the preparation meditation is not an action, it is not a doing. It is being. Being aware, being watchful, are same as being. Witnessing or watching are not doing, they are being itself. Be aware of the posture.
STHIRA SUKHAM ASANAM. You watch the body as the witness, with a smile on the lips. Do not allow yourself to be distracted, just watch the body. As you watch the body, you may notice that mind becomes very quiet and also between the body and you the witness there is no mind. Meaning there are not thoughts, now watch the body. Between the body and myself the watchfulness there are not thoughts. Mind is always between them, the matter which is the body and the spirit which is the witnessing-awareness. Watch the body. While watching the body you realize, first hand, that mind, meaning the thought is the bridge between matter and spirit, matter being the body and spirit being the watchfulness. If the mind digresses, if the mind is distracted, do not condemn it; with a smile bring it back. And watch the body. As you watch the body you can see that, the body does not pose any problems. And I the watchfulness have no problems either. Now we can see that all problems of life originate in the mind. Just smile and watch the body. The problem created by mind through thought may have some practical reality, but quite often it could be the pure imagination of a mind which is crude due to its attachments. Watch the body. When you hear an extraneous sound do not mentally resist the sound, do not label it as disturbance. Just be indifferent with a smile or even accept with a smile. And watch the body.
Look at the body as – this body. IDAM SHARIRAM. You explore how strong I sense, me sense you have in the body. The body is this – this body. But I am habituated to take the body as myself, how strong is this habit? You examine, you explore. While exploring do not be in a hurry for the answer, stay with the question and stay with the exploration - this body. I am habituated to take this body as myself. Focus on the lower body, both the legs and the loins; just watch the lower portion of the body. This body. In the lower portion of the body you can easily discern yourself from the body. You can easily see that I am not the body, in the lower portion. Come to the middle portion of the body, the stomach, hands chest and the back – this body. Here the sense of I is stronger than in the lower portion. But still you see the middle portion as – this body. Practice I am not this body, I am aware of this body. Now come to the neck and above that, here the I sense, is strongest. Here you may find it even difficult to see as – this body, because of the strong I sense. But try, this – this body. Try with a smile to see that I am not - this body. I am aware of the body, I am not – this body. The identification with the body is not your fault it is the genetic condition of the brain cells. That is why, it is strong in the head and that is why it is tough to overcome. Notice all this with a smile. This is the fundamental AJNANA – ignorance. As you notice the AJNANA for what it is gradually the AJNANA weakens. This body. Watch the entire body with a smile. IDAM SHARIRAM. I am aware of the body, KSHETRAJNYO’HAM.
ॐ।शान्तिःशान्तिःशान्तिः॥
Relax, sit at ease. And whenever you can, you try to dis-identify with the body. There is a joy in such practice. You get deeply relaxed when you dis-identify with the body. Slowly open the eyes.
