शार्ङ्गधन्वा mNs

Today we will look at the form शार्ङ्गधन्वा mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.10.30.

Gita Press translation – Seeing the conjuring trick employed by the Yakṣas against Dhruva – a trick which was so very difficult to counteract – a number of hermits that had assembled there prayed for his welfare (in the following words) (29). The hermits said: O son of Uttānapāda may the almighty Lord Viṣṇu (the Wielder of the famous Śārṅga bow), who relieves the agony of His suppliants, wipe out your enemies! By uttering and hearing His very Name people easily succeed in this very life in conquering death, which is so hard to overcome, O dear Dhruva (30).

(1) शार्ङ्गं धनुर्यस्य स: = शार्ङ्गधन्वा – He (Lord Viṣṇu) who has (wields) the bow (named) Śārṅga.

(2) शार्ङ्ग सुँ + धनुस् सुँ । By 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे – Two or more terms having the designation पदम् and ending in the nominative case may optionally compound to yield a बहुव्रीहि: compound provided the terms are employed to denote the sense of another पदम् (which is not part of the compound.)

(3) The adjective ‘शार्ङ्ग सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-35 सप्तमीविशेषणे बहुव्रीहौ – In a बहुव्रीहि: compound the पदम् which ends in a seventh case affix or is an adjective takes the prior position.

Note: ‘शार्ङ्ग सुँ + धनुस् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) शार्ङ्गधनुस् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) शार्ङ्गधनु अनँङ् । By 5-4-132 धनुषश्च – The ending letter of a बहुव्रीहि: compound which ends in the term ‘धनुस्’ takes the substitution ‘अनँङ्’ and this substitution becomes the ending member of the compound. Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-53 ङिच्च only the ending letter of the compound – and not the entire compound – is replaced by ‘अनँङ्’।
Note: साहचर्यात् ङित्त्वश्रवणाच्चास्यादेशत्वम् – Based on the following two considerations we conclude that the ‘अनँङ्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a आदेश: (substitute) and not a प्रत्यय: (affix) – i) The rules from 5-4-129 through 5-4-150 prescribe substitutions and not affixes. Since 5-4-132 is placed in this section it is logical to expect this सूत्रम् to prescribe a substitution ii) The purpose of the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत् in ‘अनँङ्’ is to facilitate the application of 1-1-53 ङिच्च which only makes sense if ‘अनँङ्’ is a substitute.
Note: The purpose of specifying the substitution ‘अनँङ्’ as being the ending member of the compound is to prevent the application of 5-4-154 शेषाद्विभाषा which only applies if no other समासान्त: operation has been prescribed.
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 5-4-133 वा संज्ञायाम् (which immediately follows the सूत्रम् 5-4-132 in the अष्टाध्यायी), the substitution ‘अनँङ्’ prescribed by 5-4-132 धनुषश्च is made optional if the compound denotes a proper name. Since the compound ‘शार्ङ्गधनुस्’ denotes a proper name (of Lord Viṣṇu) the substitution ‘अनँङ्’ is optional here. In the case where the substitution is not done, the final compound प्रातिपदिकम् is ‘शार्ङ्गधनुस्’ (giving शार्ङ्गधनु: as the प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।)

(6) शार्ङ्गधनु अन् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(7) शार्ङ्गधन्वन् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि

The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. In the present example विष्णुः is being qualified. Hence we assign the masculine gender to the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शार्ङ्गधन्वन्’। It declines like ‘यज्वन्’-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् ।

(8) शार्ङ्गधन्वन् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the designation सर्वनामस्थानम् here as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। This allows 6-4-8 to apply below.

(9) शार्ङ्गधन्वन् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(10) शार्ङ्गधन्वान् + स् । By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चाऽसम्बुद्धौ – The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in the letter ‘न्’ gets elongated if it is followed by a non-vocative affix having the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्।

(11) शार्ङ्गधन्वान् । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix ‘सुँ’, ‘ति’ or ‘सि’ is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix ‘ङी’ or ‘आप्’।
Note: Now ‘शार्ङ्गधन्वान्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम् । This allows the सूत्रम् 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.

(12) शार्ङ्गधन्वा । By 8-2-7 नलोप: प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending letter ‘न्’ of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The one (Cupid) who wields the flower-bow was burnt by the fire which emanated from the third eye of the one (Lord Śiva) who bears the Pināka bow.” Use the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘निर्’ for ‘to emanate.’ Construct a बहुव्रीहि: compound for ‘one who has (wields) the flower-bow’ = पुष्पं धनुर्यस्य स: and ‘one who has (wields) the Pināka bow’ = पिनाकं धनुर्यस्य स:। Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तृतीय’ for ‘third.’

Easy questions:

1. Why is the form आशंसन् used in the verses a आर्षप्रयोगः (irregular grammatical usage)?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘उ’ in the form क्षिणोतु?

  1. 1. Can you spot another (besides शार्ङ्गधन्वा) बहुव्रीहिः compound in the verses?
    Answer: The compound विपक्षान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विपक्ष’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) is also a बहुव्रीहि: compound.

    विरुद्धः पक्षो यस्य सः = विपक्षः – an enemy (one who is on the opposite side)
Note: The compound ‘विरुद्ध’ is a गति-समास: formed using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः – The indeclinable ‘कु’, terms having the designation ‘गति’ (ref. 1-4-60 गतिश्च etc) as well as the terms ‘प्र’ etc. (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) invariably compound with a syntactically related term and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।

    विरुद्ध सुँ + पक्ष सुँ । By 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे।
The adjective ‘विरुद्ध सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-35 सप्तमीविशेषणे बहुव्रीहौ।
    Note: ‘विरुद्ध सुँ + पक्ष सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = विरुद्ध + पक्ष । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = विपक्ष । By the वार्तिकम् (under 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे) प्रादिभ्यो धातुजस्य वाच्यो वा चोत्तरपदलोपः।
Note: Compounding is already prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-2-24 itself. It is only for the elision of the उत्तरपदम् (of the compound पूर्वपदम्) that this वार्तिकम् is necessary.

The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. In the present example ‘जन’ (which is not explicitly stated) is being qualified. Hence we assign the masculine gender to the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विपक्ष’। It declines like ‘राम’-शब्द:। द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् is विपक्षान्।

    2. In which sense has the affix ‘क्त’ been used in the form समागताः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समागत’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) used in the verses?
    i. कर्मणि
    ii. कर्तरि
    iii. भावे
    iv. None of the above
Answer: The affix ‘क्त’ in the form समागताः has been used कर्तरि as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च – When following one of the verbal roots listed below, the affix ‘क्त’ may be used in the active voice (कर्तरि) as well as in the passive voice (भावकर्मणो:) –
    (i) any verbal root used in the sense of motion (गत्यर्थ:)
(ii) any verbal root used intransitively (अकर्मक:)
    (iii) the verbal roots √श्लिष् (श्लिषँ आलिङ्गने ४. ८३), √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६), √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७), √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २. ११), √वस् (वसँ निवासे १. ११६०), √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४), √रुह् (रुहँ बीजजन्मनि प्रादुर्भावे च १. ९९५) and √जॄ (जॄष् वयोहानौ ४. २५)।

Please refer to the answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गत’ – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2014/12/08/सुभिक्षम्-nns/#comment-35138

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गत’ is compounded with the उपसर्गौ ’सम्’ and ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    सम् + आङ् + गत
    = समागत । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the form दुस्तरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुस्तर’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) used in the verses?
Answer: The कृत् affix ‘खल्’ is used to derive the form दुस्तरम्।

    दु:खेन तीर्यते = दुस्तरः – which is difficult to overcome

    The form ‘ दुस्तर’ is derived from the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) in composition with the उपसर्गः ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ as follows –
दुर्/दुस् तॄ + खल् । By 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् – The affix खल् is used following a verbal root when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease.’
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्, the term ईषद्‌दु:सुषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
    = दुर्/दुस् तॄ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दुर्/दुस् तर् + अ । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = दुर्/दुस् तर ।
Now we form the compound between ‘दुर्/दुस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘तर’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: The उपपदम् ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. And hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    = दुर्/दुरुँ तर । By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
    = दुर् + तर । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दुः + तर। By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
    = दुस्तर । By 8-3-34 विसर्जनीयस्य सः।

‘दुस्तर’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This is an adjective. It is qualifying ‘मृत्यु’ here. Hence it is masculine in gender. It declines like ‘राम’-शब्दः। द्वितीया-एकवचनम् is दुस्तरम्।

    4. Which वार्तिकम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the form सुखेन used in the commentary?
Answer: The third case affix occurring in the form सुखेन (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सुख’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्) is justified by the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया) प्रकृत्यादिभ्य उपसङ्ख्यानम्– A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following the प्रातिपदिकानि (nominal stems) ‘प्रकृति’ etc.
Note: आकृति-गणोऽयम्। The list ‘प्रकृति’ etc is a आकृति-गण: – which is a class or group of words in which some words are actually mentioned and the room is left to include others which are found undergoing the same operations. So even though ‘सुख’ is not specifically listed in the प्रकृत्यादि-गणः, from the usage we have to understand it to be included there.
In the present example, सुखेन is an adverb to the action तरति। सुखेन तरति = easily crosses/overcomes.

    5. Can you spot the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ in the commentary?
    Answer: The spot the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ occurs in the form प्रार्थितवन्तः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रार्थितवत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √अर्थ (अर्थ उपयाच्ञायाम् १०. ४४७) with the उपसर्गः ’प्र’।

    अर्थ + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्। Note: ‘णिच्’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः। This allows 6-4-48 to apply below.
    = अर्थ + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अर्थ् + इ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    = अर्थि । ‘अर्थि’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

अर्थि + क्तवतुँ । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा – The affix ‘निष्ठा’ (ref. 1-1-26) may be used following a verbal root when denoting an action in the past tense. Note: The affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ is used to denote the agent of the action (कर्तरि) as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌।
    = अर्थि + तवत् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
    = अर्थि + इट् तवत् । By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = अर्थि + इ तवत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अर्थ् + इ तवत् । By 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि।
    = अर्थितवत् ।
    ‘अर्थितवत्’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    प्र + अर्थितवत् = प्रार्थितवत् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    ‘प्रार्थितवत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    Answer: पिनाकधन्वनः तृतीयात् नेत्रात् निर्गतेन अग्निना पुष्पधन्वा दग्धः = पिनाकधन्वनस्तृतीयान्नेत्रान्निर्गतेनाग्निना पुष्पधन्वा दग्धः।
Note: Since the compounds ‘पिनाकधनुस्’ and ‘पुष्पधनुस्’ denote proper names (of Lord Śiva and Cupid respectively), as per the सूत्रम् 5-4-133 वा संज्ञायाम्, the substitution ‘अनँङ्’ is optional here. In the case where the substitution is not done, the forms will be पिनाकधनुष: (in place of पिनाकधन्वनः) and पुष्पधनु: (in place of पुष्पधन्वा)।

    Easy questions:
    1. Why is the form आशंसन् used in the verses a आर्षप्रयोगः (irregular grammatical usage)?
Answer: The form आशंसन् is derived from the verbal root √शस् (आङः शसिँ इच्छायाम् १. ७१६) which is always preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’। This verbal root has a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः and therefore as per 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् this verbal root takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix. But here in the form आशंसन्, it has taken a परस्मैपदम् affix, which is why it is a आर्षप्रयोगः (irregular grammatical usage). The grammatically correct form is आशंसन्त – derived as follows –

    The letter ‘इँ’ at the end of the verbal root ‘शसिँ’ gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

    The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथमपुरुष:, बहुवचनम्।
    शंस् + लँङ् । By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
    = शंस् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = शंस् + झ । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्
    = शंस् + शप् + झ । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = शंस् + अ + झ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = शंस् + अ + अन्त । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = शंसन्त । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = अट् शंसन्त । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = अशंसन्त । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    ’आङ्’ is the उपसर्ग: (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    आङ् + अशंसन्त
    = आ + अशंसन्त । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = आशंसन्त । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘उ’ in the form क्षिणोतु?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-86 एरुः prescribes the substitution ‘उ’ in the form क्षिणोतु – derived from the verbal root √क्षि (क्षि हिंसायाम् ५. ३३).

    The विवक्षा is लोँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    क्षि + लोँट् । By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
    = क्षि + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = क्षि + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। ‘तिप्’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-73 to apply below.
    = क्षि + ति। अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = क्षि + श्नु + ति । By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः। Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ ।
    = क्षि + नु + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix ‘नु’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the letter ‘इ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘क्षि’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = क्षिनोति । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = क्षिनोतु । By 3-4-86 एरुः -The letter ‘इ’ of a लोँट् is substituted by the letter ‘उ’।
    = क्षिणोतु । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।
