Translation – When nectar (however) did not appear from the ocean (of milk), being churned in the aforesaid manner by the commanders of the heavenly and Asura forces, Lord Ajita Himself took up the churning (16). Holding the serpent (Vāsuki) with His (four) triumphant arms vouchsafing protection to the world, and agitating the ocean with the churn-dasher (in the form of Mount Mandara), the Lord – who was dark-brown like a cloud, had a cloth of golden hue wrapped about His loins, was adorned with a garland (of sylvan flowers) and a pair of ear-rings that flashed like lightning, wore glossy and wavy locks on His head and was possessed of reddish eyes, and who (in the form of the divine Tortoise) bore Mount Mandara (on His back), now shone like a rival mountain (17).

Dark like a cloud.

See question 1.

As per 2-1-55 उपमानानि सामान्यवचनैः – सुबन्तानि (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदानि which denote a standard of comparison optionally compound with सुबन्तानि (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदानि which have denoted the common attribute – provided both the सुबन्त-पदे refer to the same item – and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।
Note: उपमीयते येन तदुपमानम् – That to which something is compared is called उपमानम् – the standard of comparison.
Note: ये शब्दा: पूर्वं साधारणधर्ममुक्त्वाधुना तद्वति द्रव्ये वर्तन्ते ते सामान्यवचना इत्युच्यन्ते – Those words which having previously described a common attribute, presently denote the thing/substance which possesses that common attribute are known as सामान्यवचना:।

See question 2.

(3) As per 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् the term ‘मेघ सुँ’ – which denotes a standard of comparison – gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-55 (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपमानानि ends in the nominative case. And hence the term ‘मेघ सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘मेघ सुँ + श्याम सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मेघश्याम’ is masculine since the latter member ‘श्याम’ of the compound is used here in the masculine. The compound declines like राम-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्। The compound is qualifying अजितः (Lord Ajita.)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Commenting on the विग्रह-वाक्यम् – मेघ इव श्‍याम: – of this compound, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – इह पूर्वपदं तत्सदृशे लाक्षणिकमिति सूचयितुं लौकिकविग्रहे इवशब्द: प्रयुज्यते। Please explain.
Answer: Here the purpose of using the term ‘इव’ (‘like’) in the लौकिक-विग्रह: is to indicate that the prior member (‘मेघ’) of the compound denotes ‘मेघसदृश’ (‘like a cloud.’)

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-55 उपमानानि सामान्यवचनैः (used in step 2) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – पूर्वनिपातनियमार्थं सूत्रम्। Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-1-55 उपमानानि सामान्यवचनैः is composed for the purpose of necessarily placing the term denoting the उपमानम् (in the present example ‘मेघ’) in the prior position in the compound.
Note: The compounding itself is already authorized by the But using 2-1-57 would allow us to place either term in the prior position in the compound, which would be undesirable.

    3. Which सूत्रम् justifies the used of a fifth case affix in the form सिन्धो: (and मथ्यमानात्) used in the verse?
Answer: The use of a fifth case affix in the form सिन्धो: (and मथ्यमानात्) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the अपादानम् (that from which detachment/ablation takes place) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

Note: The सूत्रम् 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी applies here since ‘सिन्धु’ (ocean) – which is the source of the सुधा (nectar) – gets the designation अपादानम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-4-30 जनिकर्तुः प्रकृतिः – The कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes a cause from which something/someone takes birth is designated as अपादानम्।

    4. In the verses can you spot a word in which सम्प्रसारणम् has taken place?
Answer: सम्प्रसारणम् has taken place in the form गृहीत्वा – derived from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: The common agent of the actions गृहीत्वा (having held) and मथ्नन् (churning) is भगवान् (the Lord.) The earlier of the two actions is the action of ‘to hold’ which is denoted by √ग्रह् and hence √ग्रह् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
    Note: The affix ‘क्त्वा’ is a कित् (has the ।etter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। This allows 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च to apply in the next step.
By 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च – The verbal roots √ग्रह (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ४) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) when followed by an affix which is a कित् (has the ।etter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the ।etter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)।
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 7-2-37 ग्रहोऽलिटि दीर्घः।

    ‘गृहीत्वा’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।
    गृहीत्वा + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-139 ग्लाजिस्थश्च ग्स्नु: been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-139 ग्लाजिस्थश्च ग्स्नु: has been used in the form जिष्णुभिः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जिष्णु’, पुंलिङ्गे/नपुंसकलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √जि (जि जये १. Note: The adjective जिष्णुभिः is qualifying the masculine/neuter noun दोर्भिः in the verses.

By 3-2-139 ग्लाजिस्थश्च ग्स्नु: – Following any one of the verbal roots listed below, the affix ‘ग्स्नु’ may be used to denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill
7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः। And since the affix ‘ग्स्नु’ is a गित् (has the letter ‘ग्’ as a इत्), 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘इ’ of the अङ्गम् ’जि’ which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।
    ‘जिष्णु’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Kumbhakarṇa who was tall as a mountain was killed by Śrī Rāma with a single arrow.” Construct a कर्मधारय: compound for ‘tall as a mountain’ = गिरिरिव तुङ्ग:।
