Translation – That kinsman Yudhiṣṭhira (the king of dharma) desires to bear the responsibility of (conducting) the sacrificial ceremony counting on you – whose shoulders are capable of (carrying) a heavy burden – as an ally. Great souls shower their grace on even enemies who are seeking their refuge even as the great rivers help the mountain-torrents – which are (like) their (competing) co-wives – to reach the ocean (which is their common master/husband.)

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) अध्वरस्य धूः = अध्वरधुरा – burden/responsibility of (conducting) the sacrificial ceremony.
Note: The sixth case affix in अध्वरस्य is as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे।

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) अध्वर ङस् + धुर् सुँ । By 2-2-8 षष्ठी – A पदम् ending in a sixth case affix optionally compounds with a (syntactically related) पदम् ending in a सुँप् affix and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘अध्वर ङस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 (which prescribes the compounding) the term षष्ठी ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘अध्वर ङस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘अध्वर ङस् + धुर् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) अध्वर + धुर् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) अध्वरधुर् + अ । By 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे – Following a compound ending in either ‘ऋच्’ or ‘पुर्’ or ‘अप्’ or ‘धुर्’ (when it is not related to अक्ष: ‘axle’) or ‘पथिन्’ the तद्धित: affix ‘अ’ is prescribed and this affix becomes the ending member of the compound.
Note: ‘अ अनक्षे’ इतिच्‍छेदः – The term आनक्षे contained in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे should be split as अ + अनक्षे। The first case affix at the end of ‘अ’ has been irregularly elided.

= अध्वरधुर ।

Note: Since ‘धुर्’ is feminine in gender, as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the तत्पुरुषः compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अध्वरधुर’ is also feminine in gender and hence we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:) ‘टाप्’।
Note: The addition of a समासान्त-प्रत्यय: (an affix at the end of a compound) does not affect the gender of the compound. Hence in the present example, the addition of the affix ‘अ’ at the end of the compound does not block the application of 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः। This is what is explained in the commentary as – समासान्तानां प्रकृतिलिङ्गत्वात्तत्पुरुषे परवल्लिङ्गत्वे टाप्।

(6) अध्वरधुर + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in the letter ‘अ’ get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(7) अध्वरधुर + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) अध्वरधुरा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

(9) अध्वरधुरा + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

(10) अध्वरधुराम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे (used in step 5) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘अनक्षे’ इत्येतत्सामान्यतः श्रुतमपि धुरैव संबध्यते सामर्थ्यात्, नान्यै:। Please explain.

2. Commenting on the same सूत्रम् the काशिका says – अनक्ष इति किम्? अक्षस्य धूः = अक्षधूः। Please explain.

3. Under the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी gives the example विष्णो: पू: = विष्णुपुरम्। Commenting on this example the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – यद्यपि पुरशब्देन समासेऽप्येतत्सिध्यति, तथापि ‘विष्णुपू:’ इत्यनिष्टवारणाय सूत्रे पूर्ग्रहणम्। Please explain.

4. Can you spot the affix ‘टच्’ in the verses?

5. From which verbal root is the form वोढुम् (used in the commentary) derived?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“King Daśaratha wanted to entrust the responsibility of (governing) the kingdom of Ayodhyā on Śrī Rāma’s shoulder.” Use the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ for ‘to entrust.’ Form a षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘the kingdom of Ayodhyā’ and use this compound to form the larger षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष: compound ‘the responsibility of the kingdom of Ayodhyā.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix ‘सन्’ in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे (used in step 5) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘अनक्षे’ इत्येतत्सामान्यतः श्रुतमपि धुरैव संबध्यते सामर्थ्यात्, नान्यै:। Please explain.
Answer: Even though the exclusion ‘अनक्षे’ (when not related to अक्ष: ‘axle’) is mentioned generally in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे, it connects only with ‘धुर्’ and not with the others – ‘ऋच्’ or ‘पुर्’ or ‘अप्’ or ‘पथिन्’। The reason for this is that ‘अक्ष’ which denotes an axle can only make sense with ‘धुर्’ which denotes a yoke/pin. ‘अक्ष’ cannot logically relate to ‘ऋच्’ (hymn) or ‘पुर्’ (town) or ‘अप्’ (water) or ‘पथिन्’ (path).

    2. Commenting on the same सूत्रम् the काशिका says – अनक्ष इति किम्? अक्षस्य धूः = अक्षधूः। Please explain.
Answer: In order to understand the importance of the exclusion ‘अनक्षे’ (when not related to अक्ष: ‘axle’) – mentioned in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे – consider the example अक्षस्य धूः = अक्षधूः – the pin (at the end) of an axle. Here since ‘धुर्’ is used in conjuction with ‘अक्ष’, the समासान्त: affix ‘अ’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे) does not apply because of the exclusion ‘अनक्षे’।

The derivation of the compound अक्षधूः is as follows –
    अक्ष ङस् + धुर् सुँ । By 2-2-8 षष्ठी।
Note: By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘अक्ष ङस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 (which prescribes the compounding) the term षष्ठी ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘अक्ष ङस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    Note: ‘अक्ष ङस् + धुर् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = अक्ष + धुर् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = अक्षधुर् ।
Note: Since ‘धुर्’ is feminine in gender, as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the तत्पुरुषः compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अक्षधुर्’ is also feminine in gender.

    The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    अक्षधुर् +सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = अक्षधुर् +स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अक्षधुर् । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्।
    = अक्षधूर् । By 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः।
    = अक्षधूः । By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
If the exclusion ‘अनक्षे’ were not mentioned in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे, this सूत्रम् would have applied in the present example also giving the undesired form अक्षधुरा

    3. Under the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी gives the example विष्णो: पू: = विष्णुपुरम्। Commenting on this example the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – यद्यपि पुरशब्देन समासेऽप्येतत्सिध्यति, तथापि ‘विष्णुपू:’ इत्यनिष्टवारणाय सूत्रे पूर्ग्रहणम्। Please explain.
Answer: The derivation of the compound विष्णो: पू: = विष्णुपुरम् is as follows –
    विष्णु ङस् + पुर् सुँ । By 2-2-8 षष्ठी।
Note: By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘विष्णु ङस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 (which prescribes the compounding) the term षष्ठी ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘विष्णु ङस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    Note: ‘विष्णु ङस् + पुर् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = विष्णु + पुर् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = विष्णुपुर् + अ । By 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे।
= विष्णुपुर । Note: Since the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुर्’ is feminine in gender, as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the तत्पुरुषः compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विष्णुपुर’ should also be feminine in gender. क्लीबत्वं लोकात् – but the neuter gender is used here as per the usage in the language. So the common usage overrides the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः here. ‘विष्णुपुर’ declines like वन-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is विष्णुपुरम्।

The compound विष्णुपुरम् may also be derived directly – without using the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे – as विष्णो: पुरम् = विष्णुपुरम् using the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुर’। This being the case, what is the point in mentioning ‘पुर्’ in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे? The reason is that if ‘पुर्’ were not mentioned in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74, we would have the undesired form (विष्णो: पू: =) विष्णुपू:
So the purpose of mentioning ‘पुर्’ in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे is not to derive forms such as विष्णुपुरम् but to avoid undesired forms such as विष्णुपू:

    4. Can you spot the affix ‘टच्’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘टच्’ occurs in the form धर्मराजः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ’धर्मराज’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    लौकिक-विग्रह: –
    धर्मस्य राजा = धर्मराज: – the king of dharma
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ’धर्मराज’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देवराज’ as shown in the following post – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/03/19/देवराजाय-mds
    Note: Instead of starting the derivation with देव आम् + राजन् सुँ we have to start with धर्म ङस् + राजन् सुँ।

    5. From which verbal root is the form वोढुम् (used in the commentary) derived?
Answer: The form वोढुम् is derived from the verbal root √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १. ११५९).

Please see the following post for derivation of the form वोढुम् – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/03/04/वोढुम्-ind

Note: In the above post the affix तुमुँन् is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् while in the present example it is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-158 समानकर्तृकेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with another verbal root which denotes the sense of ‘wish/desire’, provided both actions have the same agent.

    Answer: राजा दशरथः अयोध्याराज्यधुराम् रामस्य स्कन्धे न्यसितुम् इयेष = राजा दशरथोऽयोध्याराज्यधुरां रामस्य स्कन्धे न्यसितुमियेष।

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot the affix ‘सन्’ in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘सन्’ occurs in the form विवक्षते – derived from the desiderative form of the verbal root √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १. ११५९).

    वोढुमिच्छति = विवक्षते ।

वह् + सन् । By 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).
    = वह् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = वह्स् वह्स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = व वह्स । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = वि वह्स । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
    = वि वढ्स । By 8-2-31 हो ढः।
    = वि वक्स । By 8-2-41 षढोः कः सि।
    = विवक्ष । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
    ‘विवक्ष’ has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    विवक्ष + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = विवक्ष + अ + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = विवक्षते । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च has been used in the form अनुगृह्णन्ति – derived from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ७१).

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form गृह्णन्ति – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/16/निशाचर-mvs/#comment-5534

    ’अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अनु + गृह्णन्ति = अनुगृह्णन्ति ।
