मुहूर्तसेवया fIs

Today we will look at the form मुहूर्तसेवया fIs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.84.12.

Translation – Sacred waters alone do not possess purificatory virtues, nor do images of clay and stone alone represent the deities. Whereas these purify a man after one has recourse to them and worshiped them for a long time, holy men purify by their very sight (11). The gods presiding over fire, the sun, the moon, the stars, the earth, water, ether, air, speech and mind, when worshiped, cannot completely wash off our sins, inasmuch as they promote our sense of diversity; whereas on account of (our) service (to them) even for a few minutes, the wise wipe off our sins (12).

(1) मुहूर्तं सेवा = मुहूर्तसेवा – service for a short time.
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे a second case affix is used following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मुहूर्त’।

By 2-1-29 अत्यन्तसंयोगे च – When uninterrupted connection is meant, words ending in a second case affix and denoting (a period of) time optionally compound with a (syntactically related) पदम् ending in a सुँप् affix and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
Note: The अनुवृत्ति: of काला: comes down from the prior सूत्रम् 2-1-28 कालाः in to this सूत्रम् 2-1-29. But the अनुवृत्ति: of क्तेन does not come down (from the सूत्रम् 2-1-25 स्वयं क्तेन) in to this सूत्रम् 2-1-29.

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘मुहूर्त अम्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-29 (which prescribes the compounding) the term द्वितीया (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from 2-1-24 द्वितीया श्रितातीतपतितगतात्यस्तप्राप्तापन्नैः) ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘मुहूर्त अम्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘मुहूर्त अम् + सेवा सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ मुहूर्तसेवा’ is feminine since the latter member ‘सेवा’ of the compound is feminine.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

See question 1.

By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ‘आप्’ ending bases get the letter ‘ए’ as the substitute when followed by the affix ‘आङ्’ (‘टा’) or ‘ओस्’। Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter ‘आ’ of the base ‘मुहूर्तसेवा’ is replaced by ‘ए’।

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

Questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the form मुहूर्तसेवया?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-29 अत्यन्तसंयोगे च (used in step 2) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अक्तान्तार्थं वचनम्। Please explain.

3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दर्शन’ used in the form दर्शनात् (पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) in the verses?

4. In which word in the verses has the affix ‘क्विँप्’ been used?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे been used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The objects of sense give (only) momentary happiness.” Use the masculine noun ‘विषय’ for ‘object of sense.’ Form a compound for ‘momentary happiness’ = ‘happiness for a moment’ = मुहूर्तं सुखम्।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘घ्’ in the form घ्नन्ति?

  1. 1. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the form मुहूर्तसेवया?
Answer: The third case affix in the form मुहूर्तसेवया is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-23 हेतौ – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes a cause/reason (for a thing or quality or action.)
The use of the the सूत्रम् 2-3-23 हेतौ is justified here since ’मुहूर्तसेवा’ (service (to them) even for a few minutes) is the cause/reason for विपश्चितोऽघं घ्नन्ति – the wise wiping off (our) sins.

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-29 अत्यन्तसंयोगे च (used in step 2) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अक्तान्तार्थं वचनम्। Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-1-28 कालाः (which has the अनुवृत्ति: of क्तेन from the सूत्रम् 2-1-25 स्वयं क्तेन) states that – words ending in a second case affix and denoting (a period of) time optionally compound with a (syntactically related) सुबन्तं पदम् – provided the पदम् is composed from a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘क्त’ – and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
The सूत्रम् 2-1-29 अत्यन्तसंयोगे च (which has the अनुवृत्ति: of काला: from the prior सूत्रम् 2-1-28 कालाः but not the अनुवृत्ति: of क्तेन from the सूत्रम् 2-1-25 स्वयं क्तेन) states that – When uninterrupted connection is meant, words ending in a second case affix and denoting (a period of) time optionally compound with a (syntactically related) सुबन्तं पदम् (not necessarily composed from a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘क्त’) and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
Hence in answer to the question ‘why is the सूत्रम् 2-1-29 अत्यन्तसंयोगे च necessary when we already have the prior सूत्रम् 2-1-28 कालाः?’ the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says अक्तान्तार्थं वचनम् – The सूत्रम् 2-1-29 is necessary for those situations where a word ending in a second case affix and denoting (a period of) time is to be compounded with a (syntactically related) सुबन्तं पदम् which is composed from a प्रातिपदिकम् not ending in the affix ‘क्त’। (For the situation where the प्रातिपदिकम् does end in the affix ‘क्त’ the prior सूत्रम् 2-1-28 कालाः would suffice.)

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दर्शन’ used in the form दर्शनात् (पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) in the verses?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘ल्युट्’ is used to form the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दर्शन’ – derived from the verbal root √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १.

By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।

    4. In which word in the verses has the affix ‘क्विँप्’ been used?
    Answer: The affix ‘क्विँप्’ has been used in the form भेदकृतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भेदकृत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् or षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

By 3-2-76 क्विप् च – (In addition to the affixes mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-74) the affix ‘क्विँप्’ may also be used (following any verbal root with or without the presence of a उपपदम्।)
    Note: The term सुपि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च from the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 सुपि स्थः) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘भेद + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति – To express the agent or the object (of an action), a nominal stem takes a sixth case affix when the nominal stem is used in conjunction with a term which ends in a कृत् affix. (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।
Note: The affix क्विँप् is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop the गुणादेशः in place of the ending letter ‘ऋ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘कृ’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
Note: Even though the affix क्विँप् undergoes सर्वापहार-लोपः (completely disappears), 6-1-71 still applies as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
We form a compound between ‘भेद + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘कृत्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘भेद + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘भेद + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case ‘उपपदम्’) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’।
    ‘भेद ङस् + कृत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    भेद + कृत् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयो।

As stated in the commentary, भेदकृतः is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् when qualifying उपासिताः (अग्न्यादयः) and is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम् when qualifying पुंसः।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ङस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used in the form कुर्वतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुर्वत्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative. Note: The verbal root √कृ is उभयपदी। Here as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् the verbal root √कृ has taken the परस्मैपदम् affix ‘शतृँ’।
By 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः। ‘उ’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = कर् + उ + अत् । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix ‘शतृँ’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as an इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘करु’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    Note: 8-2-79 न भकुर्छुराम् prevents the दीर्घादेशः (elongation) of the उपधा (letter ‘उ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘कुर्’ that would have been done by 8-2-77 हलि च।
    ‘कुर्वत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    कुर्वतः is qualifying the noun पुंस:।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ङस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः has been used in the form पुनन्ति – derived from the verbal root √पू (पूञ् पवने ९.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘श्ना’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the letter ‘ऊ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘पू’ which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘अन्ति’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः – When followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्), the letter ‘आ’ of the affix ‘श्ना’ or of a reduplicated root (अभ्यस्तम्) is elided.
By 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘घ्’ in the form घ्नन्ति?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु prescribes the substitution ‘घ्’ in the form घ्नन्ति – derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).

Please see the following post for derivation of the form
