परोक्षम् nNs

Today we will look at the form परोक्षम् nNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.29.59.

Translation – This doctrine of the knowers of Veda is heard of everywhere. (But how can this be?) (Moreover) whatever action, recommended in the Vedas, is (actually) performed goes out of sight and is no longer visible. (How can a thing which has altogether disappeared yield good or evil consequences?) (59) Nārada replied: The Jīva itself experiences (the good and evil) consequences of its actions hereafter through the same subtle body, (mainly consisting of) the mind, by which he performs (those) actions and which continues uninterrupted (even in the lives to come) (60).

(1) अक्ष्ण: परम् = परोक्षम् = beyond the range of sight (perception.)

See question 1.

Note: समासान्तविधानसामर्थ्यादव्ययीभाव: – (Even though ‘पर’ is not a अव्ययम् and there is no rule that prescribes the formation of the अव्ययीभाव: compound ‘परोक्ष’,) the fact that a समासान्त-प्रत्यय: (the affix (‘टच्’) at the end of this अव्ययीभाव: compound) is being prescribed tells us that a अव्ययीभाव: compound is allowed here.

Note: We know that the final form of the compound is ‘परोक्ष’ because पाणिनि: himself has used this form in the सूत्रम् 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिट्। In order to get this desired form ‘परोक्ष’, the term ‘पर सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound and the ending letter (‘अ’) of ‘पर’ is replaced by ‘ओ’।

‘परो सुँ + अक्षि ङसिँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति

By the गण-सूत्रम् (in the शरत्प्रभृतिगण: of the गणपाठ:) ‘प्रतिपरसमनुभ्योऽक्ष्ण:’ – In a अव्ययीभाव: compound the तद्धित: affix टच् is prescribed following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अक्षि’ – provided ‘अक्षि’ is preceded by either ‘प्रति’, ‘पर’, ‘सम्’ or ‘अनु’ – and this affix टच् becomes the ending member of the compound. Note: The शरत्प्रभृतिगण: is referred to in the सूत्रम् 5-4-107 अव्ययीभावे शरत्प्रभृतिभ्यः

The fact that the अङ्गम् ‘परोक्षि’ has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here allows the सूत्रम् 6-4-148 to apply in the next step. The अङ्गम् ‘परोक्षि’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 1-4-18 यचि भम् – Excluding the affixes that are सर्वनामस्थानम्, when any of the other affixes from ‘सुँ’ down to ‘कप्’ that begin with the letter ‘य्’ or अच् (vowel) follow, the base gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: From ‘सुँ’ down to ‘कप्’ means any affix prescribed from 4-1-2 down to the end of the 5th Chapter of the अष्टाध्यायी।

By 6-4-148 यस्येति च – When the letter ‘ई’ or a ‘तद्धित’ affix follows, the (ending) इ-वर्ण: (letter ‘इ’ or ‘ई’) or the (ending) अवर्ण: (letter ‘अ’ or ‘आ’) of the अङ्गम् with the भ-सञ्ज्ञा takes elision (लोपः)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 2-4-83 नाव्ययीभावादतोऽम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – This सूत्रम् has two parts – (a) नाव्ययीभावादत: – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix does not take the लुक् elision (which would have been done by 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः) and (b) अम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix – other than a fifth case affix – is substituted by अम्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Commenting on the compound परोक्षम् the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – वृत्तिविषये ‘अक्षि’शब्द इन्द्रियमात्रपर:। Please explain.
Answer: Even though the word ‘अक्षि’ literally means ‘eye’, in the present context (of the compound परोक्षम्) it should be interpreted to mean any sense organ in general – not just the eye. Hence परोक्षम् means – beyond (sensory) perception.

    2. In which word in the verses has the affix ‘क्विँप्’ been used?
Answer: The affix ‘क्विँप्’ has been used in the derivation of the compound वेदविदाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वेदविद्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।

    The compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वेदवित्’ is derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९) as follows:
By 3-2-76 क्विप् च – (In addition to the affixes mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-74) the affix ‘क्विँप्’ may also be used (following any verbal root with or without the presence of a उपपदम्)।
Note: In the present example we have used the general सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च instead of the specific सूत्रम् 3-2-61 सत्सूद्विषद्रुहदुहयुजविदभिदच्छिदजिनीराजामुपसर्गेऽपि क्विप्‌। All the forms that are derived by using 3-2-61 may also be derived by the general rule 3-2-76. The सूत्रम् 3-2-61 is simply an elaboration of the general rule 3-2-76 क्विप् च।
    Note: The term सुपि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च from the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 सुपि स्थः) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘वेद + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।
    We form a compound between ‘वेद + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘विद्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।
In the compound, ‘वेद + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘वेद + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
    ‘वेद + ङस् + विद्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    = वेद + विद् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-12 6 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् has been used in the commentary in the form दुर्घटः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुर्घट’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    दु:खेन घट्यते = दुर्घटः – difficult to bring about

The form ‘दुर्घट’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √घट् (घटँ चेष्टायाम् १. ८६७) in composition with ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ as follows –
By 3-1-26 हेतुमति।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    As per the गणसूत्रम् ‘घटादयो मित:’ – The verbal roots √घट् (घटँ चेष्टायाम् १. ८६७) etc down to √फण् (फणँ गतौ १. ९५५) are considered to be ‘मित्’ (having the letter ‘म्’ as a इत्)। This allows 6-4-92 to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-92 मितां ह्रस्वः।
    ‘घटि’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

दुर्/दुस् घटि + खल् । By 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् – The affix खल् is used following a verbal root when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease.’
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः the affix ‘खल्’ – as well as any other affix in the meaning of ‘खल्’ – is only used to denote the action (भावः) or the object (कर्म)
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्, the term ईषद्‌दु:सुषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।
Now we form the compound between ‘दुर्/दुस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘घट’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: The उपपदम् ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. And hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
This is an adjective. It is qualifying तद्भोगः here. Hence it is masculine in gender. It declines like ‘राम’-शब्दः।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the second case affix used in the word कर्तृभोक्तृदेहविच्छेदम् in the commentary?
    Answer: The use of a second case affix in the form कर्तृभोक्तृदेहविच्छेदम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कर्तृभोक्तृदेहविच्छेद, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) – which is co-occurring with विना – is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-32 पृथग्विनानानाभिस्तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌ – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) or a fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) or a second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with पृथक्, विना or नाना।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Sages meditate upon that which is beyond perception.” Use the verbal root √ध्यै (ध्यै चिन्तायाम् १. १०५६) for ‘to meditate upon.’

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The cause of the universe is beyond perception.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः has been used in the form श्रूयते – derived from the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १.

As per 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः – The ending vowel of a अङ्गम् is elongated when followed by an affix which begins with the letter ‘य्’, as long as the affix neither has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा nor the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा।

Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form श्रूयते – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/11/26/कीर्णानाम्-mgp/#comment-8851

    2. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a आत्मनेपदम् affix in the form संगच्छते used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-3-29 समो गम्यृच्छिभ्याम् justifies the use of a आत्मनेपदम् affix in the form संगच्छते – derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। As per 1-3-29 समो गम्यृच्छिभ्याम् – When preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’ and when used intransitively, the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. १६) takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix (and not the default परस्मैपदम् by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।)
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 7-3-77 इषुगमियमां छः।

    ‘सम्’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।
By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य।
