Translation – Mount Meru’s peak – around which the circular array of stars moves – was imitated day after day by that (Dwārkā) city’s rampart which was scattered by the multitude of conch-shells bouncing on the series of moving waves of ocean water.

(1) अहन्यहनि = अन्वहम् = day after day = every day.

By 2-1-6 अव्ययं विभक्तिसमीपसमृद्धिव्यृद्ध्यर्थाभावात्ययासम्प्रतिशब्दप्रादुर्भावपश्चाद्यथानुपूर्व्ययौगपद्यसादृश्यसम्पत्तिसाकल्यान्तवचनेषु – A अव्ययम्‌ (indeclinable) used in any one of the following meanings invariably compounds with a (syntactically related) term ending in a सुँप् affix to yield a अव्ययीभाव: compound –
(i) विभक्ति: – a case affix
(ii) समीपम्‌ – close by
(v) अर्थाभाव: – absence of something
(vi) अत्यय: (ध्वंस:) – disappearance (passing away)
(vii) असम्प्रति – presently inappropriate
(viii) शब्दप्रादुर्भाव: – manifestation of a sound
(ix) पश्चाद् – following
(x) यथा (योग्यतावीप्सापदार्थानतिवृत्तिसादृश्यानि यथार्था:) – appropriateness, repetition, non-transgression of something, similarity
(xi) आनुपूर्व्यम्‌ – in orderly succession
(xii) यौगपद्यम्‌ – simultaneity
(xiii) सादृश्यम्‌ – similarity/resemblance. Note: यथार्थत्वेनैव सिद्धे पुन: सादृश्यग्रहणं गुणभूतेऽपि सादृश्ये यथा स्यादित्येवमर्थम्‌ – सादृश्यम्‌ is mentioned here again (even though it is already given as one of the meanings of यथा in (x) above) in order to allow compounding even when सादृश्यम्‌ is used in a secondary (adjectival) sense
(xv) साकल्यम्‌ – totality/completeness
(xvi) अन्त: – termination/end

By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’। Here the term ‘अव्ययम्’ in the सूत्रम् 2-1-6 ends in the nominative case. Therefore the अव्ययम् ‘अनु’ gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ by 1-2-43. Hence ‘अनु’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘अनु + अहन् ङि’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 6-1-77 इको यणचि

By 5-4-108 अनश्च – Following a अव्ययीभाव: compound ending in ‘अन्’ the तद्धित: affix टच् is prescribed and this affix becomes the ending member of the compound.
Note: The term अन: is qualifying अव्ययीभावात्। Hence as per 1-1-72 येन विधिस्तदन्तस्य, we get the meaning अन्नन्तादव्ययीभावात्‌।
Note: If a अव्ययीभाव: compound ends in a neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ending in ‘अन्’ then the next सूत्रम् 5-4-109 नपुंसकादन्यतरस्याम्‌ only optionally prescribes the affix टच् following such a compound.

See question 1.

Note: The अङ्गम् ‘ अन्वहन्’ has the designation ‘भ’ here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows 6-4-144 to apply in the next step.

By 6-4-144 नस्तद्धिते – The ‘टि’ portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) of a अङ्गम् (base) is elided provided the अङ्गम् –
i) has the designation ‘भ’ (ref.
ii) ends in the letter ‘न्’ and
iii) is followed by a तद्धित: affix
Note: The ‘अन्’ part of the अङ्गम् ‘अन्वहन्’ has the designation ‘टि’ by the सूत्रम् 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि – That part of a group of sounds which begins with the last vowel of the group (and goes to the end of the group) gets the designation ‘टि’।

(9) अन्वह + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 2-4-83 नाव्ययीभावादतोऽम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – This सूत्रम् has two parts – (a) नाव्ययीभावादत: – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix does not take the लुक् elision (which would have been done by 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः) and (b) अम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix – other than a fifth case affix – is substituted by अम्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. What is the optional final form in this example when the तद्धित: affix टच् (which is optionally prescribed by the सूत्रम् 5-4-109 नपुंसकादन्यतरस्याम्‌) is not applied in step 6?

2. Which कृत् affix is used to form the compound ‘वारिधि’ (used as part of the compound चलद्वारिधिवारिवीचिच्छटोच्छलच्छङ्खकुलाकुलेन in the verse)?

3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment नुँम् in the form चलन्तीनाम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चलन्ती’, षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) used in the commentary?

4. In which word in the commentary has the affix णिच् been elided?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः been used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I go to the temple every day.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः been used in the verse?

2. Can you spot the affix यक् in the commentary?

  1. 1. What is the optional final form in this example when the तद्धित: affix टच् (which is optionally prescribed by the सूत्रम् 5-4-109 नपुंसकादन्यतरस्याम्‌) is not applied in step 6?
Answer: The optional final form in this example when the तद्धित: affix टच् (which is optionally prescribed by the सूत्रम् 5-4-109 नपुंसकादन्यतरस्याम्‌) is not applied is अन्वहः

After step 5 of the above post, we have ‘अन्वहन्’। Since we are considering the case where the affix टच् is not being added, ‘अन्वहन्’ is the final form of the प्रातिपदिकम्। Now we proceed to add the default affix ‘सुँ’।

    अन्वहन् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः । Note: Now ‘अन्वहन्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-69 रोऽसुँपि – The letter ‘र्’ is substituted for (the ending letter ‘न्’ of) ‘अहन्’ when not followed by a सुँप् affix.
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Which कृत् affix is used to form the compound ‘वारिधि’ (used as part of the compound चलद्वारिधिवारिवीचिच्छटोच्छलच्छङ्खकुलाकुलेन in the verse)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘कि’ is used to form the compound ‘वारिधि’ – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) in composition with the object ‘वारि’।

By 3-3-93 कर्मण्यधिकरणे च – To denote the locus of the action, the affix ‘कि’ may be used following a verbal root which has the designation ‘घु’ (ref. 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्) when in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action.)
    Note: The affix ‘कि’ has आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः and is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। This allows 6-4-64 to apply below.
Note: Here ‘वारि आम्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
In the compound, ‘वारि आम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    ‘वारिधि’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
Compounds such as ‘वारिधि’ which end in the affix ‘कि’ are used in the masculine gender.

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment नुँम् in the form चलन्तीनाम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चलन्ती’, षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम् prescribes the augment नुँम् in the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चलन्ती’ – derived from the verbal root √चल् (चलँ कम्पने १.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे। Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the verbal root √चल् takes a परस्मैपदम् affix and therefore ‘शतृँ’ is chosen and not ‘शानच्’।
Note: ‘शतृँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-68 to apply below.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे। Note: Recall the सूत्रम् 6-1-85 अन्तादिवच्च – When a single substitute comes (using 6-1-84) in place of the preceding and the following element, then that single substitute is treated as final (अन्त:) of what precedes as well as initial (आदि:) of what follows. In the present case, what precedes is the ending letter ‘अ’ of ‘चल’ and what follows is the beginning letter ‘अ’ of ‘अत्’ and after applying 6-1-97 we get ‘चलत्’। Now 6-1-85 allows us to treat ‘चलत्’ as (i) चल + त् as well as (ii) चल् + अत्। Below we will treat it as चल + त् allowing us to satisfy the conditions for applying 7-1-81.

Now we derive the feminine
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘चलत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
By 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम् – When a term (‘त्’) which is part of a शतृँ-प्रत्यय: follows a अवर्ण: (letter ‘अ’ or ‘आ’) belonging to the शप्/श्यन्-प्रत्यय:, then a अङ्गम् ending in such a term always takes the नुँम् augment when the affix ‘शी’ or the feminine affix ‘ङी’ follows. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम् augment joins after the last vowel (letter ‘अ’) of ‘चलत्’।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि ।

    4. In which word in the commentary has the affix णिच् been elided?
    Answer: The affix णिच् has been elided in the form प्रापितः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रापित’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from causative form of the verbal root √आप् (आपॢँ व्याप्तौ ५. १६) with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’।

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
‘आपि’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

By 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि – The affix ‘णि’ is elided when followed by a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which has taken the augment ‘इट्’।

    ‘आपित’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः has been used in the form सङ्कीर्णेन (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सङ्कीर्ण’, पुंलिङ्गे/नपुंसकलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √कॄ (विक्षेपे ६. १४५) with the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’।

But 7-2-11 श्र्युकः क्किति stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः and 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः – The letter ‘न्’ is the replacement in place of the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which immediately follows the letter ‘र्’ or the letter ‘द्’ and also in place of the letter ‘द्’ which immediately precedes a निष्ठा affix.
    Thus there are two cases:
    (i) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘र्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ is replaced by a letter ‘न्’।
(ii) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘द्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ (of the निष्ठा affix) as well as the letter ‘द्’ (of the धातु:) is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।
By 8-2-77 हलि च।

    ‘कीर्ण’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।
By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य।
    ‘सङ्कीर्ण/संकीर्ण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I go to the temple every day.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः has been used in the form अन्वकारि – derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०)

Please see the following post for derivation of the form

    ‘अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Can you spot the affix यक् in the commentary?
    Answer: The affix यक् occurs in the form व्यज्यते – derived from the verbal root √अन्ज् (अन्जूँ व्यक्तिम्रक्षणकान्तिगतिषु (व्यक्तिमर्षणकान्तिगतिषु) ७.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
Note: The affix ‘त’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-67 to apply below.
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् – The affix यक् follows a verbal root when a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)।
By 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति – The penultimate letter ‘न्’ of bases that end in a consonant and that do not have letter ‘इ’ as a marker, takes लोपः when followed by an affix that has letter ‘क्’ or letter ‘ङ्’ as a marker

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
