Gita Press translation – Śrī Śuka replied: Having propitiated Lord Datta (better known as Dattātreya), a part manifestation of Lord Nārāyaṇa, through acts of worship, Arjuna, the jewel among the Kṣatriyas and the then ruler of the Haihayas, had secured a thousand arms, formidableness in the eyes of foes, uninterrupted soundness of the senses and organs of action, affluence, glory, prowess, fame and bodily strength, mastery of Yoga and superhuman power which was characterized by virtues such as the capacity to assume an atomic form. His movement being unimpeded (everywhere), he went about the worlds like the wind (17-19).

हैहयानाम् is the षष्ठी-बहुवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हैहय’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-39 स्वामीश्वराधिपतिदायादसाक्षिप्रतिभूप्रसूतैश्च – A sixth case affix (‘ङस्’, ‘ओस्’, ‘आम्’) or a seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with ‘स्वामी’ (master) or ‘ईश्वर’ (lord) or ‘अधिपति’ (ruler) or ‘दायाद’ (heir) or ‘साक्षिन्’ (witness) or ‘प्रतिभू’ (guarantor) or ‘प्रसूत’ (offspring.)
In the present example, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हैहय’ is co-occurring with अधिपति:। Hence the condition for applying 2-3-39 is satisfied and a sixth case affix is used following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हैहय’। (A seventh case affix could have also been used.)
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘आम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

See question 2.

By 6-4-3 नामि – The ending vowel of an अङ्गम् gets elongated if followed by the term ‘नाम्’ ।

  1. 1. Where may the सूत्रम् 2-3-39 स्वामीश्वराधिपतिदायादसाक्षिप्रतिभूप्रसूतैश्च (used in step 1) be applied in the first ten verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-39 स्वामीश्वराधिपतिदायादसाक्षिप्रतिभूप्रसूतैश्च finds scope in the form भूतानाम् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूत’, षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) in the following verse –

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूत’ is co-occurring with ईश्वर:। Hence the condition for applying 2-3-39 is satisfied and a sixth case affix is used following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूत’। (A seventh case affix could have also been used.)

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-39 स्वामीश्वराधिपतिदायादसाक्षिप्रतिभूप्रसूतैश्च the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – षष्ठ्यामेव प्राप्तायां पाक्षिक-सप्तम्यर्थं वचनम्। Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-39 is necessary for prescribing the optional seventh case in addition to the sixth case affix which is already available by 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे।

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-39 स्वामीश्वराधिपतिदायादसाक्षिप्रतिभूप्रसूतैश्च the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘दायमादत्ते’ इति दायादः। Please explain.
Answer: The विग्रहवाक्यम् for the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दायाद’ (an heir) – used in the सूत्रम् 2-3-39 – is given as दायमादत्ते – one who receives a share. The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दायाद’ is derived using the कृत् affix ‘क’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः – When in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action) a verbal root which ends in the letter ‘आ’ may take the affix ‘क’ as long as there is no उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे) associated with the verbal root. The conditions for applying the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 are satisfied in the form ‘दायाद’, except for the one (अनुपसर्गे) which states that there should be no उपसर्ग: (prefix) preceding the verbal root. In the form ‘दायाद’ we do have the prefix आङ् preceding the verbal root √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. So then how do we justify the application of the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 here? The तत्त्वबोधिनी says that the very fact that पाणिनि: has given the (ready-made) form ‘दायाद’ in the सूत्रम् 2-3-39 allows us to apply the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 here bypassing the condition ‘अनुपसर्गे’ (when no prefix is present.)

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ has been used in the form आराध्य – derived from the verbal root √राध् (राधँ वृद्धौ ४. १८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions आराध्य (having propitiated) and लेभे (had secured) is अर्जुनः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of propitiating which is denoted by √राध् and hence √राध् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘राध् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6). The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: Since the affix ‘य’ does not begin with a वल् letter it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।)
    ‘आराध्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।

    आराध्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix तुमुँन् in the form वक्तुम् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ justifies the use of the affix तुमुँन् in the form वक्तुम् – derived from the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८).

By 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ – The affix तुमुँन् as well as ण्वुल् may be used following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the future action.
Here the action ‘says’ (आह) is the क्रियार्था क्रिया for the future action of ‘narrating’ (वचन-क्रिया)।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘तुम्’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-30 चोः कुः।
    ‘वक्तुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    वक्तुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Indra is the ruler of the gods.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि has been used in the form लेभे – derived from the verbal root √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ #१.

The derivation of the form लेभे is shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/01/17/लेभे-3as-लिँट्

    2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि apply in the form चचार? (Which condition is not satisfied?)
Answer: As per 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि – The letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् takes letter ‘ए’ as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the letter ‘अ’ is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)।
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

In the form चचार derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ: १. ६४०) the condition (ii) is not satisfied. चचार is derived using the affix ‘णल्’ which is not a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। Therefore 6-4-120 cannot apply.
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ the affix ‘णल्’ (which comes in place of the affix ‘तिप्’ by 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः) is a पित् (has the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्।) Hence the सूत्रम् 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् (which requires the affix to be अपित् – not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) does not apply here. The affix ‘णल्’ does not become a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix and hence the condition (ii) for applying the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 is not satisfied.
Please see the following post for derivation of the form
