Gita Press translation – On Śrī Rāma describing his (Purūravā’s) wonderful birth, Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata the famous one said again : “O best among men, please tell us what Ilā did after staying a year with the son of Soma (Budha).” (1-2) Hearing those sweet words of those two, (Lakṣmaṇa and Bharata) who eagerly asked him, Śrī Rāma again described the story of the son of Prajāpati (Ila) (3). When (Ilā) had regained manhood, the very wise one and possessed of fame, Budha, reckoned the very noble Saṁvarta (Ṛṣi) (4).

रामे is सप्तमी-एकवचनम् of the पुंल्लिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राम’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। As per the सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ – A seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes the one (agent/object) whose action (the timing of which is known) gives an indication of (the timing of) another action.
Note: A सप्तमी used in this manner is called भावलक्षण-सप्तमी or भाव-सप्तमी or सत्-सप्तमी or सति-सप्तमी। In English it is called Locative Absolute.
Note: The action (लक्षण-क्रिया) in the absolute clause is generally expressed by using a participle ending in a कृत् affix. This participle (here ‘उक्तवत्’) – being in grammatical agreement with the प्रातिपदिकम् (here the agent ‘राम’) which denotes the agent/object of the action – also takes the seventh case affix.

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ been used in the first twenty verses of Chapter Two of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ has been used in the form शरीरे (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शरीर’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse –

Note: The action (लक्षण-क्रिया) in the absolute clause is generally expressed by using a participle ending in a कृत् affix. This participle (here ‘हन्यमान’) – being in grammatical agreement with the प्रातिपदिकम् (here the object ‘शरीर’) which denotes the agent/object of the action – also takes the seventh case affix.

    2. Where else (besides in रामे) has the सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ has also been used in the form शूरे (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शूर’, पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

Note: The action (लक्षण-क्रिया) in the absolute clause is generally expressed by using a participle ending in a कृत् affix. This participle (here ‘गत’) – being in grammatical agreement with the प्रातिपदिकम् (here the agent ‘शूर’) which denotes the agent/object of the action – also takes the seventh case affix.

    3. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a second case affix in the form संवत्सरम् used in the verses?
Answer: The use of a second case affix in the form संवत्सरम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संवत्सर’) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) denoting (measure of) time or (measure of) path/road when continuous connection (with a quality or action or thing) is meant.

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् has been used to prescribe the affix ‘तुमुँन्’ in the form शंसितुम् (अर्हसि) – derived from the verbal root √शंस् (शंसुँ स्तुतौ १.

By 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with any one of the following verbal roots or their synonyms –
‘शंसितुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।
    शंसितुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    5. Can you spot the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of ‘त्वा’) in the verses?
Answer: The substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of ‘त्वा’) is used in the form निशम्य – derived from the verbal root √शम् (शमुँ उपशमे ४. ९८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘नि’।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions निशम्य (hearing) and उवाच (said) is रामः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of hearing which is denoted by √शम् and hence √शम् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘शम् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘नि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6). The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: Since the affix ‘य’ does not begin with a वल् letter it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।)
    ‘निशम्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।
    निशम्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“When I read the Geeta all my doubts vanished.” Use the verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४. ९१) for ‘to vanish.’
