Gita Press translation – Wearing side-locks (after the fashion of the day), the two Brothers now diverted Themselves by revolving (in pairs with Their hands clasped together), long jumps, putting the weight, slapping the arms, tug of war and wrestling (12). Sometimes, while others danced, the two Brothers Themselves sang or sounded the instruments or applauded the dancers, O great king, by exclaiming “Well done! Bravo!” (13)

अन्येषु is पुंल्लिङ्गे सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्य’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। As per the सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ – A seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes the one (agent/object) whose action (the timing of which is known) gives an indication of (the timing of) another action.
Note: A सप्तमी used in this manner is called भावलक्षण-सप्तमी or भाव-सप्तमी or सत्-सप्तमी or सति-सप्तमी। In English it is called Locative Absolute.
Note: The action (लक्षण-क्रिया) in the absolute clause is generally expressed by using a participle ending in a कृत् affix. This participle (here ‘नृत्यत्’) – being in grammatical agreement with the प्रातिपदिकम् (here the agent ‘अन्य’) which denotes the agent/object of the action – also takes the seventh case affix.

By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् – The ending letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् changes to ‘ए’ when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ been used in verses 20-25 of Chapter Eight of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-37 यस्य च भावेन भावलक्षणम्‌ has been used in the form भूतेषु (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूत’, सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) and the corresponding pronoun सर्वेषु (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सर्व’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) in the following verse –

Note: The action (लक्षण-क्रिया) in the absolute clause is generally expressed by using a participle ending in a कृत् affix. This participle (here ‘नश्यत्’) – being in grammatical agreement with the प्रातिपदिकम् (here the agent ‘भूत’) which denotes the agent/object of the action – also takes the seventh case affix.

    2. In the verses can you spot a word in which the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in place of ‘लँट्’) has been used?
    Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in place of ‘लँट्’) has been used in the form नृत्यत्सु (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नृत्यत्’, पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √नृत् (नृतीँ गात्रविक्षेपे ४. १०).

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative.Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the verbal root √नृत् takes a परस्मैपदम् affix and therefore ‘शतृँ’ is chosen and not ‘शानच्’।
Note: ‘शतृँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-69 to apply below.
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘नृत्यत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. In which sense has the third case in भ्रमणैः, लङ्घनैः, क्षेपैः, आस्फोटनविकर्षणैः and नियुद्धेन been used?
    ii. करणे
    iii.
    iv. None of the above
Answer: The third case in भ्रमणैः, लङ्घनैः, क्षेपैः, आस्फोटनविकर्षणैः and नियुद्धेन has been used करणे by 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used to denote कर्ता (the doer of the action) as well as करणम् (the instrument of the action) provided the doer/instrument has not been expressed otherwise.

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to construct the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गायक’ (used in the form गायकौ (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-द्विवचनम्)) in the verses?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘ण्वुल्’ is used to construct the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गायक’ – derived from the verbal root √गै (गै शब्दे १.

Please see the following post for the derivation of the

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ल्युट् used in लङ्घनैः (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लङ्घन’, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-115 ल्युट् च prescribes the affix ल्युट् in the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लङ्घन’ – derived from the verbal root √लङ्घ् (लघिँ शोषणे (भाषायां दीप्तौ सीमातिक्रमे च) १.

    The ending letter ‘इ’ of ‘लघिँ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। Therefore this verbal root is a इदित् (has the letter ‘इ’ as a इत्)।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“While the body perishes the Self does not perish.” Use the verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४. ९१) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ for ‘to perish.’

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः has been used in the form (हे) महाराज (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महाराज’, सम्बुद्धिः)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा here by 2-3-49 एकवचनं संबुद्धिः।
By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः – Following a अङ्गम् (base) ending in ‘एङ्’ (‘ए’ or ‘ओ’) or a short vowel, a consonant is dropped if it belongs to a सम्बुद्धि: affix.

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘अतुस्’ in the form ‘शशंसतुः’?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः prescribes the substitution ‘अतुस्’ in the form ‘शशंसतुः’ – derived from the verbal root √शन्स् (शन्सुँ स्तुतौ १.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः – – When they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – ‘तिप्’, ‘तस्’, ‘झि’, ‘सिप्’, ‘थस्’, ‘थ’, ‘मिप्’, ‘वस्’ and ‘मस्’ – are substituted by ‘णल्’, ‘अतुस्’, ‘उस्’, ‘थल्’, ‘अथुस्’, ‘अ’, ‘णल्’, ‘व’ and ‘म’ respectively. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘अतुस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य ।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
