गिरिशम् mAs

Today we will look at the form गिरिशम् mAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.1.29.

श्रीशुक उवाच
एकदा गिरिशं द्रष्टुमृषयस्तत्र सुव्रताः । दिशो वितिमिराभासाः कुर्वन्तः समुपागमन् ।। ९-१-२९ ।।

श्रीधर-स्वामि-टीका
विगतं तिमिरमाभासः प्रकाशश्चान्यस्य यासु तथाभूता दिशः कुर्वन्तः ।। २९ ।।

Gita Press translation – Śrī Śuka continued : Once upon a time sages of sacred vows repaired to that land (Ilāvṛta) in order to see Lord Śiva (who ordinarily lives on Mount Kailāsa), driving away darkness as well as (all other) light from the quarters (by their superior splendor) (29).

गिरिशम् is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गिरिश’।

(1) गिरिश + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। As per 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ – A sixth case affix (‘ङस्’, ‘ओस्’, ‘आम्’) is not used (to denote कर्ता (the doer) or कर्म (the object)) of an action denoted by any one of the following –
(i) (a word ending in a substitute in place of) the affix ‘ल्’ (लँट्, लिँट् etc.)
(ii) (a word ending in) the affix ‘उ’ or an affix ending in ‘उ’
(iii) (a word ending in) the affix ‘उक’
(iv) an indeclinable
(v) (a word ending in) a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26 क्तक्तवतू निष्ठा।)
(vi) (a word ending in) the affix ‘खल्’ or any affix having the same meaning as that of ‘खल्’
(vii) (a word ending in) an affix from the प्रत्याहार: ‘तृन्’ which is formed starting from ‘तृ’ in 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे down to 3-2-135 तृन्
In the present example the object ‘गिरिश’ is associated with the indeclinable द्रष्टुम् (‘to see’), which ends in the affix ‘तुमुँन्’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌।) ‘द्रष्टुम्’ gets the designation अव्ययम् by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः। Therefore ‘गिरिश’ takes the second case affix ‘अम्’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया) and not the sixth case affix ‘ङस्’ (which would have been prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति)।

(2) गिरिशम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ been used in verses 34-35 of Chapter One of the गीता?

2. The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दिश्’ (used in the form दिश: (द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) in the verses) ends in which कृत् affix?

3. In which word in the verses has the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) been used?

4. Can you spot the augment अम् in the verses?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the letter ‘म्’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विगत’ (used in the form विगतम् in the commentary)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Many people come here to see this beautiful temple.”

Easy questions:

1. In which word in the verses has लुँङ् been used?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-109 जसि च been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ been used in verses 34-35 of Chapter One of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ has been used in the following verse in the form घ्नतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘घ्नत्’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) and the corresponding pronoun form एतान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एतद्’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    एतान्न हन्तुमिच्छामि घ्नतोऽपि मधुसूदन |
    अपि त्रैलोक्यराज्यस्य हेतोः किं नु महीकृते || 1-35||

Here the object ‘घ्नत्’ (and the corresponding pronoun ‘एतद्’) is associated with the indeclinable हन्तुम् (‘to kill’), which ends in the affix ‘क्त्वा’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌।) ‘हन्तुम्’ gets the designation अव्ययम् by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः। Therefore ‘घ्नत्’ (as well as ‘एतद्’) takes the second case affix ‘शस्’ (prescribed by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया) and not the sixth case affix ‘आम्’ (which would have been prescribed by 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति)।

    2. The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दिश्’ (used in the form दिश: (द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) in the verses) ends in which कृत् affix?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-59 ऋत्विग्दधृक्स्रग्दिगुष्णिगञ्चुयुजिक्रुञ्चां च gives the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दिश्’ as a readymade form ending in the कृत् affix ‘क्विँन्’
    The विग्रहः is दिशति (ददाति अवकाशम्) इति दिक्। The verbal root used is √दिश् (दिशँ अतिसर्जने ६. ३).

    3. In which word in the verses has the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) been used?
    Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) has been used in the form कुर्वन्तः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुर्वत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

    कृ + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = कृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + शतृँ । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः – ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ replaces ‘लँट्’ when it follows a verbal root which denotes an action which constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) or result/cause (हेतु: = फलम्/कारणम्) of another action. The verbal root √कृ is उभयपदी। Here as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् the verbal root √कृ has taken the परस्मैपदम् affix ‘शतृँ’।
Note: In the present example the action (‘कुर्वत्’ – making) constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) of another action (समुपागमन् – repaired.)
    = कृ + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + उ + अत् । By 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः। ‘उ’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = कर् + उ + अत् । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix ‘शतृँ’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as an इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘करु’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = कुर् + उ + अत् । By 6-4-110 अत उत्‌ सार्वधातुके।
    = कुर्वत् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    Note: 8-2-79 न भकुर्छुराम् prevents the दीर्घादेशः (elongation) of the उपधा (letter ‘उ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘कुर्’ that would have been done by 8-2-77 हलि च।
    ‘कुर्वत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The विवक्षा is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
    कुर्वत् + जस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Note: The affix ‘जस्’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। This allows the सूत्रम् 7-1-70 to apply below.
    = कुर्वत् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = कुर्व नुँम् त् + अस् । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुर्वत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which has the letter ‘ऋ’ as a इत्। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
    = कुर्व न् त् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कुर्वंतस् । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
    = कुर्वंतः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
    = कुर्वन्तः । By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः।

    4. Can you spot the augment अम् in the verses?
Answer: The augment ‘अम्’ occurs in the form द्रष्टुम् – derived from the verbal root √दृश् (दृशिर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३).

दृश् + तुमुँन् । By 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ – The affix तुमुँन् as well as ण्वुल् may be used following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the future action.
Here the action ‘repaired’ (समुपागमन्) is the क्रियार्था क्रिया for the future action of ‘seeing’ (दर्शन-क्रिया)।
    = दृश् + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix तुमुँन् from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = दृ अम् श् + तुम् । By 6-1-58 सृजिदृशोर्झल्यमकिति – When followed by a अकित् (does not have letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix which begins with a झल् letter, the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ४. ७५, ६. १५०) as well as √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) gets the augment ‘अम्’। As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the ‘अम्’ augment attaches itself after the last vowel (the letter ‘ऋ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘दृश्’।
    = दृ अ श् + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = द्रश् + तुम् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    = द्रष् + तुम् । By 8-2-36 व्रश्च-भ्रस्ज-सृज-मृज-यज-राज-भ्राजच्छशां षः।
    = द्रष्टुम् । By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।
    ‘द्रष्टुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the letter ‘म्’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विगत’ (used in the form विगतम् in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति prescribes the elision of the letter ‘म्’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विगत’ – derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि।’
The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विगत’ is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आगत’ as shown in answer to question 5 in the following comment – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2014/02/24/पुरीम्-fas/#comment-34942

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Many people come here to see this beautiful temple.”
    Answer: इदम् सुन्दरम् मन्दिरम् द्रष्टुम् बहवः जनाः इह आयान्ति = इदं सुन्दरं मन्दिरं द्रष्टुं बहवो जना इहायान्ति।

    Easy questions:
    1. In which word in the verses has लुँङ् been used?
Answer: लुँङ् has been used in the form समुपागमन् – derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्गाः ‘सम्’, ‘उप’ and ‘आङ्’।

    The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
गम् + लुँङ् । By 3-2-110 लुङ् – The affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.
    = गम् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = गम् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = गम् + झ् । By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = गम् + अन्त् । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = गम् + च्लि + अन्त् । By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
    Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
    = गम् + अङ् + अन्त् । By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्‌युताद्‌यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु।
    = गम् + अ + अन्त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = गमन्त् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = अट् गमन्त् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the augment ‘अट्’ which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the augment ‘अट्’ at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।
    = अगमन्त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अगमन् । By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।
    ‘सम्’, ‘उप’ and ‘आङ्’ are the उपसर्गाः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    सम् + उप + आङ् + अगमन्
    = सम् + उप + आ + अगमन् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = समुपागमन् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-109 जसि च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-109 जसि च has been used in the form ऋषयः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ऋषि’, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

    ऋषि + जस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
    = ऋषि + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = ऋषे + अस् । By 7-3-109 जसि च – when the affix ‘जस्’ follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of a) अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel. Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter ‘इ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘ऋषि’ takes the गुण: substitute ‘ए’।
    = ऋषय् + अस् । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    = ऋषयः । By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
