Translation – Imparting to the king the sanctity that arises from ablution in a holy stream, by means of the particles of dust raised by her hoofs and coming in close contact with his body.

अन्तिकात् is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्तिक’।

(1) अन्तिक + ङसिँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the 2-3-35 दूरान्तिकार्थेभ्यो द्वितीया च – A second case affix (‘अम्’) or a third case affix (‘टा’) or a fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) having the sense of either ‘far’ or ‘near.’
Note: प्रातिपदिकार्थमात्रे विधिरयम् – The case affix prescribed by this सूत्रम् denotes only the meaning of the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem.)

(2) अन्तिक + आत् । By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। Note: Since the substitute ‘आत्’ has more than one letter, as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire affix (and not just its last letter) is replaced by ‘आत्’।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(3) अन्तिकात् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-35 दूरान्तिकार्थेभ्यो द्वितीया च (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – असत्त्ववचनस्येत्यनुवृत्तेर्नेह। दूर: पन्था:। Please explain.
Answer: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘असत्त्ववचनस्य’ comes down from 2-3-33 करणे च स्तोकाल्पकृच्छ्रकतिपयस्यासत्त्ववचनस्य into this सूत्रम् 2-3-35 दूरान्तिकार्थेभ्यो द्वितीया च। ‘असत्त्ववचन’ means that which does not denote a substance. Hence 2-3-35 does not apply in the following example –
दूर: पन्था: a distant road. Here दूर: is qualifying पन्था: which is a physical thing and hence 2-3-35 does not apply. ‘दूर’ does not take a second or third or fifth case. It takes the first case affix as per 2-3-46 प्रातिपदिकार्थलिङ्गपरिमाणवचनमात्रे प्रथमा।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used in the form स्पृशद्भिः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्पृशत्’, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √स्पृश् (स्पृशँ संस्पर्शने ६. १५८) as follows:

    स्पृश् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = स्पृश् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= स्पृश् + शतृँ । By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative.Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the verbal root √स्पृश् takes a परस्मैपदम् affix and therefore ‘शतृँ’ is chosen and not ‘शानच्’।
Note: ‘शतृँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-77 to apply below.
    = स्पृश् + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्पृश् + श + अत् । By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः। Note: Since the प्रत्यय: ‘श’ is a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: which is अपित्, it becomes ङित्-वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent the गुणादेश: (for the penultimate letter ‘ऋ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘स्पृश्’) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = स्पृश् + अ + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्पृशत् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘स्पृशत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Can you spot the affix क्विप् in the verse?
    Answer: The affix क्विप् occurs in the form महीक्षितः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महीक्षित्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

    महीं क्षियति = महीक्षित् – One who rules the Earth = A king

    ‘क्षित्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √क्षि (क्षि निवासगत्योः ६.१४३).

The compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महीक्षित्’ is derived as follows:
    मही + ङस् + क्षि + क्विँप् । By 3-2-76 क्विप् च – (In addition to the affixes mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-74) the affix ‘क्विँप्’ may also be used (following any verbal root with or without the presence of a उपपदम्।)
    Note: The term सुपि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च from the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 सुपि स्थः) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘मही + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति – To express the agent or the object (of an action), a nominal stem takes a sixth case affix when the nominal stem is used in conjunction with a term which ends in a कृत् affix. (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।
    = मही + ङस् + क्षि + व् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मही + ङस् + क्षि । By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य, 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्यय:। Note: The affix क्विँप् is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop the गुणादेशः in place of the ending letter ‘इ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘क्षि’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = मही + ङस् + क्षि तुँक् । By 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक्, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ। Note: Even though the affix क्विँप् undergoes सर्वापहार-लोपः (completely disappears), 6-1-71 still applies as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
    = मही + ङस् + क्षित् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
We form a compound between ‘मही + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘क्षित्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘मही + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘मही + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
    ‘मही + ङस् + क्षित्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = मही + क्षित् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = महीक्षित् ।

    4. In which sense has the third case affix in रजःकणैः been used?
    i) कर्तरि ii) करणे iii) हेतौ iv) None of the above.
Answer: The third case affix in रजःकणैः (compound पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रजःकण’, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) has been used in the sense of ii) करणे as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used to denote कर्ता (the doer of the action) as well as करणम् (the instrument of the action) provided the doer/instrument has not been expressed otherwise. Note: ‘रजःकण’ (dust particle) is the instrument of the action expressed by the participle आदधाना (imparting).

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a fifth case affix in the form चकारात् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The use of a fifth case affix in the form चकारात् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चकार’, पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-25 विभाषा गुणेऽस्त्रियाम्‌ – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is optionally used following a non-feminine प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes a quality being a cause/reason.
Note: The सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says विभाषेति योगविभागादगुणे स्त्रियां च क्वचित् – The term ‘विभाषा’ is split into a separate सूत्रम् (from the सूत्रम् 2-3-25 विभाषा गुणेऽस्त्रियाम्‌) allowing us to apply a fifth case affix in some instances even if the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) does not denote a quality or is used in the feminine. This justifies the application of a fifth case affix following ‘चकार’ (meaning the letter ‘च्’) even though it is not a गुणवाचकशब्दः (a word denoting a quality).

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Stay close to me.”
    Answer: अन्तिकम्/अन्तिकेन/अन्तिकात् मम तिष्ठ = अन्तिकं/अन्तिकेन/अन्तिकान् मम तिष्ठ।

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः has been used in the form ईष्टे – derived from the verbal root √ईश् (ईशँ ऐश्वर्ये २. १०).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    ईश् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = ईश् + ते । By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः – The affix ‘शप्’ takes the ‘लुक्’ elision when following a verbal root belonging to the अदादि-गणः।
    = ईष् + ते । By 8-2-36 व्रश्च-भ्रस्ज-सृज-मृज-यज-राज-भ्राजच्छशां षः।
    = ईष्टे । By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ना’ in the form मनुना (used in the commentary?)
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-120 आङो नाऽस्त्रियाम् prescribes the substitution ‘ना’ in the form मनुना (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिदिकम् ‘मनु’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।

The derivation of मनुना is similar to that of पाणिना shown in answer to easy question 2 in the following comment –
