No commentary on these verses.

Gita Press translation – Accompanied by cowherd boys and pasturing the cows Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa (the Son of Devakī), one day (during the following hot weather), went far away from Vṛndāvana along-with His elder brother (Balarāma) (29). Perceiving the trees, which played the role of umbrellas to Him with their shade in the scorching rays of the summer sun, the Lord addressed the cowherd boys of Vraja (30).

वृन्दावनात् is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the (compound) नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वृन्दावन’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the 2-3-34 दूरान्तिकार्थैः षष्ठ्यन्यतरस्याम्‌ – A sixth case affix (‘ङस्’, ‘ओस्’, ‘आम्’) or a fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with a word having the sense of either ‘far’ or ‘near.’

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। Note: Since the substitute ‘आत्’ has more than one letter, as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire affix (and not just its last letter) is replaced by ‘आत्’।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-34 दूरान्तिकार्थैः षष्ठ्यन्यतरस्याम्‌ (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी commentary says – षष्ठ्यां प्राप्तायां पक्षे पञ्चम्यर्थं वचनम्। Please explain.
Answer: The sixth case affix prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे is already available for use (following a nominal stem co-occurring with a word having the sense of either ‘far’ or ‘near.’) Hence the real purpose of the सूत्रम् 2-3-34 दूरान्तिकार्थैः षष्ठ्यन्यतरस्याम्‌ is to prescribe a fifth case affix optionally (in addition to the sixth case affix which is already available by 2-3-50.)

    2. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम् the तत्त्वबोधिनी commentary says – इहान्यतरस्यांग्रहणं समुच्चयार्थं, तेन विप्रकृष्टापि पञ्चमी समुच्चीयते व्याख्यानात्, न तु संनिहिते अपि द्वितीयातृतीये। Please explain.
Answer: The mention of अन्यतरस्याम् in the सूत्रम् 2-3-34 दूरान्तिकार्थैः षष्ठ्यन्यतरस्याम्‌ is for the purpose of inclusion. From the commentary (on the the सूत्रम् 2-3-34) we understand that the fifth case affix is included here (along with the sixth case affix) even though it is mentioned in the सूत्रम् 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी which is relatively distant (from the present सूत्रम् 2-3-34); and not the second and third case affixes even though these are mentioned in the relatively closer rules 2-3-31 एनपा द्वितीया and 2-3-32 पृथग्विनानानाभिस्तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌।
Note: The logic in the commentary is as follows – पाणिनि: has repeated अन्यतरस्याम् in the सूत्रम् 2-3-34 even though it is available as अनुवृत्ति: from 2-3-32 पृथग्विनानानाभिस्तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌ because taking this अनुवृत्ति: would have also brought in the undesirable अनुवृत्ति: of द्वितीया and तृतीया (from 2-3-31 and 2-3-32 respectively). Thus we conclude that the re-mention of अन्यतरस्याम् in the सूत्रम् 2-3-34 must be to bring in the fifth case affix from the earlier

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘क्यङ्’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘क्यङ्’ occurs in the form आतपत्रायितान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आतपत्रायित’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।
    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आतपत्रायित’ is derived from the नाम-धातुः ‘आतपत्राय’।

The derivation of the नाम-धातुः ‘आतपत्राय’ is as follows –
By 3-1-11 कर्तुः क्यङ् सलोपश्च – The affix क्यङ् is employed, in the sense of conduct/treatment, after a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix and denotes an agent that is the standard of comparison. In addition the ending letter ‘स्’ (if any) of the प्रातिपदिकम् (denoting the agent) is elided optionally.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः।
    ‘आतपत्राय’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

Now we form the कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आतपत्रायित’ as follows –
By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च। The सूत्रम् 3-4-72 applies because the धातुः ‘आतपत्राय’ is अकर्मक: (intransitive).
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
It declines like राम-शब्दः in the masculine.

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ल्यप्‌’ (in place of ‘क्त्वा’) in the form वीक्ष्य?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ prescribes the substitution ‘ल्यप्‌’ (in place of ‘क्त्वा’) in the form वीक्ष्य – derived from the verbal root √ईक्ष् (ईक्षँ दर्शने १. ६९४) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।
By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions वीक्ष्य (having perceived) and आह (addressed) is भगवान् (श्रीकृष्णः)। The earlier of the two actions is the action of perceiving which is denoted by √ईक्ष् and hence √ईक्ष् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘ईक्ष् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘वि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6).The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः has been used in the verses in the form गोपैः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गोप’, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) derived as follows –
    ‘प’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √पा (पा रक्षणे २. ५१).
The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गोप’ is derived as follows:
गो + आम् + पा + क । By 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः – When in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action) a verbal root which ends in the letter ‘आ’ may take the affix ‘क’ as long as there is no उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे) associated with the verbal root. Note: The affix ‘क’ (prescribed by this सूत्रम्) is an exception to the affix ‘अण्’ prescribed by 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्।
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः, the term कर्मणि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: into the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः from the सूत्रम् 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘गो + आम्’ (which is the object (कर्म-पदम्) of पाति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘आम्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।
Now we form a compound between ‘गो + आम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘प’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘गो आम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘गो + आम्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
    ‘गो + आम् + प’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows us to apply 2-4-71 in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः। In the masculine gender ‘गोप’ declines like राम-शब्द:।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The hospital is far away from my house.” Use the masculine (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रुग्णालय’ for ‘hospital.’

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः has been used in the form गाः (पुंलिङ्ग/स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गो’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।
Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘न्’ in the form द्रुमान्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि prescribes the substitution ‘न्’ in the form द्रुमान् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘द्रुम’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘शस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः।
By 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि – In the masculine gender, when the letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘शस्’ follows a vowel which has been elongated by 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः, it is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।
