तृणबिन्दोः m-Ab-s

Today we will look at the form तृणबिन्दोः m-Ab-s from रघुवंशम् verse 8-79.

Translation – It is reported that, in days of yore, Indra, afraid of Tṛṇabindu who was practicing a rigorous penance, sent to him a celestial damsel [called] Hariṇī capable of disturbing [to disturb] his concentration of mind.

तृणबिन्दोः is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तृणबिन्दु’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the 1-4-25 भीत्रार्थानां भयहेतुः – When a verbal root having the meaning of भयम् (fear) or त्राणम् (protection) is used, the कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the cause of the fear is designated as अपादानम्। By 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the अपादानम् (that from which detachment/ablation takes place) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

‘तृणबिन्दु’ gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि – When a short ‘इ’ ending or short ‘उ’ ending term – except for ‘सखि’ – does not have the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा then it gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति – When a ङित् सुँप् affix follows, then an अङ्गम् having the घि-सञ्ज्ञा takes the गुण: substitution. Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य the गुण: substitution takes the place of only the ending letter (in this case ‘उ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘तृणबिन्दु’।

By 6-1-110 ङसिँङसोश्च – In place of a preceding एङ् (‘ए’, ‘ओ’) letter and the following short ‘अ’ of the affix ‘ङसिँ’ or ‘ङस्’, there is a single substitute of the former (एङ् letter.)

  1. 1. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a fourth case affix in the from अस्मै used in the verse?
Answer: The fourth case affix in the from अस्मै (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इदम्’, पुंलिङ्गे चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने – A fourth case affix (‘ङे’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
The सूत्रम् 2-3-13 applies because ‘इदम्’ (‘he’ referring to ‘तृणबिन्दु’) has the designation सम्‍प्रदानम् here by the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) whom the doer wishes to connect/endow with the object of an action is called सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient.)
*Note: As per the वृत्ति:, in order for this सूत्रम् to apply the action has to be that of giving. But according to the महाभाष्यम् we may apply this सूत्रम् even when the action is other than that of giving. In the present example the action is that of sending.
The doer is ‘इन्द्र’, the object of the action (प्रजिघाय) is ‘हरिणी’ and the सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) is ‘इदम्’ (‘तृणबिन्दु’)। Therefore the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इदम्’ takes a fourth case affix by the सूत्रम् 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने।

    2. Can you spot the affix खल् in the verse?
Answer: The affix खल् occurs in the verse in the form दुश्चरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुश्चर’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

The form ‘दुश्चर’ is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थः, भक्षणेऽपि १.६४०) in composition with ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ as follows –
By 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् – The affix खल् is used following a verbal root when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease.’
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्, the term ईषद्‌दु:सुषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Now we form the compound between ‘दुर्/दुस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘चर’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: The उपपदम् ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. And hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
By 8-3-34 विसर्जनीयस्य सः।
This is an adjective. It is qualifying तपः here. Hence it is neuter in gender. It declines like ‘वन’-शब्दः।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये been used in the verse? Where has it been used in the commentary?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये has been used in the verse in the form समाधिभेदिनीम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समाधिभेदिनी’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and in the commentary in the form तपोविघातिनीम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तपोविघातिनी’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

    ‘भेदिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √भिद् (भिदिँर् विदारणे ७. २).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समाधिभेदिन्’ is derived as follows:

By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘समाधि + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति। (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।

By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

We form a compound between ‘समाधि + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘भेदिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘समाधि + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘समाधि + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case ‘उपपदम्’) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’।
This allows us to apply 2-4-71 in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

Now we form the feminine
By 4-1-5 ऋन्नेभ्यो ङीप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि that end in the letter ‘ऋ’ or ‘न्’ get the ङीप् affix in the feminine gender.

    ‘घातिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तपोविघातिन्’ is derived as follows:

By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘तपस् + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति। (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु।
By 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

We form a compound between ‘तपस् + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘विघातिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘तपस् + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘तपस् + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case ‘उपपदम्’) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’।

This allows us to apply 2-4-71 in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
By 6-1-114 हशि च।
By 6-1-87 आद्‌गुणः।

Now we form the feminine
By 4-1-5 ऋन्नेभ्यो ङीप्‌।

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to construct the form प्रेरितवान् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ is used to derive the form प्रेरितवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रेरितवत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √ईर् (ईरँ गतौ कम्पने च २. ८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’।

By 3-2-102 निष्ठा – The affix ‘निष्ठा’ (ref.1-1-26 क्तक्तवतू निष्ठा) may be used following a verbal root when denoting an action in the past tense. Note: The affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ is used कर्तरि (to denote the agent) as per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌।

    ‘ईरितवत्’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 6-1-87 आद्‌गुणः।
    ‘प्रेरितवत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
Note: ‘प्रेरितवत्’ ends in the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’। Thus it ends in ‘अतुँ’, and it is also उगित् (has the letter ‘उ’ as a इत्)। This allows the सूत्रम् 6-4-14 as well as the सूत्रम् 7-1-70 to apply below.
By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः।
Note: The affix ‘स्’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
Now ‘प्रेरितवान्त्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter ‘त्’ of the पदम् takes लोपः।
Note: After this, 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Everyone is afraid of death.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“In (my) childhood I was afraid of snakes.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बाल्य’ for ‘childhood.’

    Advanced question:

    1. Derive the form प्रजिघाय। Note: You will need to use the following सूत्रम् (which we have not studied yet) – 7-3-56 हेरचङि। वृत्ति: – अभ्यासात्परस्य हिनोतेर्हस्य कुत्वं स्यान्न तु चङि – The letter ‘ह्’ of the verbal root √हि (हि गतौ वृद्धौ च ५.१२) takes a letter of the कवर्ग: when it follows a अभ्यास: (ref. Note: As per 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः, the closest substitute from the कवर्ग: for the letter ‘ह्’ is the letter ‘घ्’।
    Answer: प्रजिघाय is derived from the verbal root √हि (हि गतौ वृद्धौ च ५.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् ।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 before applying 7-2-115.
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः।
By 7-3-56 हेरचङि।
By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।

    ‘प्र’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    Easy question:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः has been used in the form अस्मै (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इदम्’, पुंलिङ्गे चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)।

Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the form
