युद्धाय mDs

Today we will look at the form युद्धाय mDs from श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता verse 2.38.

Translation – Treating alike victory and defeat, gain and loss, pleasure and pain, get ready for the battle; fighting thus you will not incur sin (38). Arjuna, this attitude of mind has been presented to you from the point of view of Jñānayoga; now hear the same as presented from the standpoint of Karmayoga (the Yoga of selfless action). Equipped with this attitude of mind, you will be able to throw off completely the shackles of Karma (39).

युद्धाय is चतुर्थी-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘युद्ध’।

‘युद्ध’ (‘battle’) gets the designation सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) by the वार्तिकम् (under 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) क्रियया यमभिप्रैति सोऽपि सम्प्रदानम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) for (aiming at) whom/which the doer does an action is also called सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient.) In the present example, ‘युद्ध’ (‘battle’) is that for which the action of ‘युज्यस्व’ (‘get ready’) is done.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने – A fourth case affix (‘ङे’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

By 7-1-13 ङेर्यः – Following a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affix ‘ङे’ (चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्) is replaced by ‘य’।

By 7-3-102 सुपि च – The ending letter ‘अ’ of a प्रातिपदिकम् is elongated if it is followed by a सुँप् affix beginning with a letter of the यञ्-प्रत्याहार:।

  1. 1. Where has the वार्तिकम् (under 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) क्रियया यमभिप्रैति सोऽपि सम्प्रदानम् been used in the last twenty-five verses of Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: The वार्तिकम् (under 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) क्रियया यमभिप्रैति सोऽपि सम्प्रदानम् has been used in the last twenty-five verses of Chapter Two of the गीता in the form योगाय (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘योग’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)। Here ‘योग’ is that for which the action of ‘युज्यस्व’ (‘get ready’) is done.

    2. Commenting on the वार्तिकम् (under 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) क्रियया यमभिप्रैति सोऽपि सम्प्रदानम् the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – क्रियाया: कृत्रिमकर्मत्वाभावात् तयाभिप्रेयमाणस्य सूत्रेण सञ्ज्ञा न प्राप्नोतीति वचनम्। Please explain.
Answer: Even though the ordinary (non-technical) meaning of कर्म is ‘action’, the technical designation कर्म is assigned (in grammar) not to the action but to the object of an action. Hence the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् cannot assign the designation सम्प्रदानम् to that for (aiming at) whom/which the doer does an action (क्रिया)। This explains the need for the वार्तिकम् (under 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) क्रियया यमभिप्रैति सोऽपि सम्प्रदानम् to assign the designation सम्प्रदानम् to that for (aiming at) whom/which the doer does an action (क्रिया)।

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘हि’ in the form अभिहिता used in the verses? Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘हि’ in the form हित्वा used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-42 दधातेर्हिः prescribes the substitution ‘हि’ in the form अभिहिता (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिहिता’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’।

Please see the following post for derivation of the
Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender in the verses we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    The सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि prescribes the substitution ‘हि’ in the form हित्वा – derived from the verbal root √हा(ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९).
Note: Here the common agent of both the actions हित्वा (giving up) and प्राप्स्यसि (shall acquire) is त्वम् (you.) The earlier of the two actions is the action of giving up which is denoted by √हा and hence √हा takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the form हित्वा – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/19/हित्वा-ind

    4. Can you spot the augment ‘मुँक्’ in the commentary?
    Answer: The augment ‘मुँक्’ is used in the commentary in the form 7-4-42 युध्यमानः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘युध्यमान’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √युध् (युधँ सम्प्रहारे ४.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। As per 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् the verbal root √युध् takes आत्मनेपदम् affixes (only.) As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ (and not ‘शतृँ’ which has the designation परस्मैपदम् as per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्) is used here.
Note: In the present example the action (‘युध्यमान’ – combating) constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) of another action (प्राप्यसि – shall acquire.)
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment मुँक् joins after the letter ‘अ’।
    ‘युध्यमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 8-2-31 हो ढः apply in the form सन्नद्ध: used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-34 नहो धः stops the सूत्रम् 8-2-31 हो ढः from applying in the form सन्नद्धः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सन्नद्ध’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √नह् (णहँ बन्धने ४.६२) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’।
By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-34 नहो धः – The letter ‘ह्’ of the verbal root ‘नह्’ is substituted by the letter ‘ध्’ when it is at the end of a पदम् or when a झल् letter follows.
    Note: 8-2-34 नहो धः is an अपवादः for 8-2-31 हो ढः।
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः ।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Seeing the army of the monkeys approaching Laṅkā, Rāvaṇa got ready for war.” Use the verbal root √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘आङ् (आ)’ for ‘to approach.’

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘व्’ in the form युज्यस्व?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-91 सवाभ्यां वामौ prescribes the substitution ‘व्’ in the form युज्यस्व – derived from the verbal root √युज् (युजँ समाधौ ४.
By 3-3-162 लोट् च, the affix लोँट् comes after a धातुः when used in the sense of command/request.
By 3-4-80 थासस्से, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 3-4-91 सवाभ्यां वामौ – The letter ‘ए’ of लोँट् which follows the letter ‘स्’ / ‘व्’ is replaced by ‘व’ / ‘अम्’ respectively.
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्।
Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as an इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘युज्’) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि has been used in the form प्रस्तौति – derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २. ३८).
Please refer to answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the form स्तौति – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/19/हित्वा-ind/#comment-33527
