प्रासादात् m-Ab-s

Today we will look at the form प्रासादात् m-Ab-s from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2.7.12.

Gita Press translation – “Tomorrow under the asterism Puṣya, (she added) will Emperor Daśaratha positively install in the office of Prince Regent the sinless Rāma (a scion of Raghu), who has conquered wrath.” (11) Filled with indignation to hear the report of the nurse, the hunchbacked maid-servant for her part got down at once from (the roof of) the palace, which resembled in shape a peak of Kailāsa (12). Burning with anger, Mantharā, who scented foul play (in the move of the Emperor), spoke as follows to Kaikeyī even while she was reposing (in bed) :- (13) “Get up, O deluded one! How can you keep lying down? Peril stares you in the face! You do not perceive yourself threatened by a flood of misery! (14)

प्रसीदन्त्यत्रेति प्रासाद:।

The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रासाद’ is derived from the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३) with the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’।

(1) प्र सद् + घञ् । By 3-3-121 हलश्च – To denote the instrument or the locus of the action, the affix घञ् is used following a verbal root ending in a consonant provided the word so derived is used in the masculine gender as a proper name.
Note: The affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घ’ prescribed by 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण।

(2) प्र सद् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) प्र साद् + अ । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः – A penultimate letter (उपधा) ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by an affix which is a ञित् (has the letter ‘ञ्’ as a इत्) or a णित् (has the letter ‘ण्’ as a इत्)।

(4) प्रासाद । By the 6-3-122 उपसर्गस्य घञ्यमनुष्ये बहुलम् – (The ending vowel of) a उपसर्ग: (ref. 1-4-59) is variously elongated when followed by a term which ends in the affix घञ्, provided that the derived word does not denote a human being.

Note: In the महाभाष्यम् under this सूत्रम् there is a वार्त्तिकम् which reads सादकारयो: कृत्रिमे – When ‘साद’ or ‘कार’ follows, the elongation (prescribed by 6-3-122) should be done only when the derived word denotes something artificial. Hence we have प्रासाद: (palace) and प्राकार: (fence), but प्रसाद: (grace) and प्रकार: (manner.)

‘प्रासाद’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्

(5) प्रासाद + ङसिँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

(6) प्रासाद + आत् । By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(7) प्रासादात् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

  1. 1. In Chapter Two of the गीता where has the affix घञ् been used with the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३) with the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’?
    Answer: The affix घञ् been used with the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३) with the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ in the form प्रसादम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रसाद’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) in Chapter Two of the गीता।
    रागद्वेषविमुक्तैस्तु विषयानिन्द्रियैश्चरन्‌ |
    आत्मवश्यैर्विधेयात्मा प्रसादमधिगच्छति || 2-64||

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रसाद’ is derived similar to ‘प्रासाद’ as shown in the post except in step (4) we do not apply 6-3-122 उपसर्गस्य घञ्यमनुष्ये बहुलम्।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-3-122 उपसर्गस्य घञ्यमनुष्ये बहुलम् (used in step 4) the काशिका says – अमनुष्य इति किम्? निषादो मनुष्यः। Please explain.
Answer: The meaning of the सूत्रम् 6-3-122 उपसर्गस्य घञ्यमनुष्ये बहुलम् is – (The ending vowel of) a उपसर्ग: (ref. 1-4-59) is variously elongated when followed by a term which ends in the affix घञ्, provided that the derived word does not denote a human being. The form ‘निषाद’ is derived from the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३) with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’, but it denotes a human being. Therefore we cannot apply 6-3-122 to elongate the ending vowel of the उपसर्गः ‘नि’।

    The derivation is as follows:
    नि सद् + घञ् । By 3-3-121 हलश्च।
    Note: The affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घ’ prescribed by 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण।
    = नि सद् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = नि साद् + अ । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
Note: 6-3-122 उपसर्गस्य घञ्यमनुष्ये बहुलम् does not apply since the derived word ‘निषाद’ denotes a human being.
    = निषाद । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।
    ‘ निषाद’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Where else (besides in प्रासादात्) has the सूत्रम् 3-3-121 हलश्च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-121 हलश्च has been used in the form रामम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राम’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राम’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/04/रामः-mns/

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the word पापदर्शिनी?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये prescribes the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the word पापदर्शिनी (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पापदर्शिनी’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    पापं पश्यति तच्छीला = पापदर्शिनी।

    ‘दर्शिनी’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३).
The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पापदर्शिनी’ is derived as follows:

    पाप + अम् + दृश् + णिनिँ । By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘पाप + अम्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
    = पाप + अम् + दृश् + इन् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पाप + अम् + दर्श् + इन् । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।

    We form a compound between ‘पाप + अम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘दर्शिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘पाप + अम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    ‘पाप + अम् + दर्शिन्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    = पापदर्शिन् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पापदर्शिनी’।
    पापदर्शिन् + ङीप् । By 4-1-5 ऋन्नेभ्यो ङीप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि that end in the letter ‘ऋ’ or ‘न्’ get the ङीप् affix in the feminine gender.
    = पापदर्शिन् + ई । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पापदर्शिनी । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I wonder who lives in this palace.” Use the अव्ययम् ‘नु’ to express the meaning of ‘I wonder.’
    Answer: अस्मिन् प्रासादे कः नु निवसति = अस्मिन् प्रासादे को नु निवसति?

    Advanced question:

    1. In Chapter Three of the अष्टाध्यायी can you find a सूत्रम् which prescribes the affix ‘ष्ट्रन्’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धात्री’ (used in the word धात्र्या: in the verses)? Hint: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the affix ‘ष्ट्रन्’ in the सूत्रम्।
    Answer: The affix ‘ष्ट्रन्’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धात्री’ is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-181 धः कर्मणि ष्ट्रन् – To denote the object of the action, the affix ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’ may be used following the verbal root √धे (धेट् पाने १. १०५०) as well as √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११).

‘धीयते’ इति धात्री – A nurse – one who is suckled or one who is appointed (for administering medicines.)

    धात्री may be derived from the verbal root √धे (धेट् पाने १. १०५०) or √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११)। If we derive it from √धे we have to first replace the ending letter ‘ए’ of the verbal root by ‘आ’ as per the सूत्रम् 6-1-45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति।

The remaining steps are as follows –

    धा + ष्‍ट्रन् । By 3-2-181 धः कर्मणि ष्ट्रन् ।
    = धा + त्र । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-6 षः प्रत्ययस्य, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: As per the परिभाषा ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the replacement of the letter ‘त्’ by the letter ‘ट्’ by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः (the initial replacement is due to the presence of the letter ‘ष्’ in ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’), now reverts to the letter ‘त्’ since the cause for the substitution ‘ट्’ no longer exists.
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the augment ‘इट्’ (for ‘त्र’) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = धात्र । ‘धात्र’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)। Since the affix ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’ contains the letter ‘ष्’ as a ‘इत्’, 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च applies. As per 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च – In the feminine gender the affix ‘ङीष्’ is prescribed following a प्रातिपदिकम् which either (i) contains the letter ‘ष्’ as a ‘इत्’ or (ii) belongs to the class of words beginning with ‘गौर’।
    धात्र + ङीष् । By 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च।
    = धात्र + ई । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: The base ‘धात्र’ has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows us to apply 6-4-148 in the next step.
    = धात्र् + ई । By 6-4-148 यस्येति च।
    = धात्री ।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the गुण: substitution in the word शेषे?
    Answer: The गुण: substitution in the word शेषे (√शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६, लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्) is prescribed by 7-4-21 शीङः सार्वधातुके गुणः – the verbal root √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६) takes the गुण: substitution when a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows.
Please see answer to question 3 in the following comment for derivation of the form शेषे – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/30/रोरवीषि-2as-लँट्/#comment-4112

    2. Can you spot the affix श्यन् in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘श्यन्’ is used in the form अवबुध्यसे derived from √बुध् (बुधँ अवगमने ४. ६८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’ as follows –

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    बुध् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = बुध् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = बुध् + थास् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्।
    = बुध् + से । By 3-4-80 थासस्से।
    = बुध् + श्यन् + से । By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् – The affix ‘श्यन्’ is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
    = बुध् + य + से । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = बुध्यसे ।
