Gita Press translation – Dear Sūta, please explain it to us who are keen to hear of the same; for the Lord’s descent on this earth is intended for the protection and prosperity of all living beings (13). Anyone who has fallen into the terrible whirlpool of birth and death can be speedily delivered from the same if he utters His Name even helplessly; for Fear itself is afraid of the Lord (14).

The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवतार’ is derived from the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) with the उपसर्ग: ‘अव’

By 3-3-120 अवे तॄस्त्रोर्घञ् – To denote the instrument or the locus of the action, the affix घञ् is used following the verbal roots √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. १७) provided these verbal roots are in composition with the उपसर्ग: ‘अव’ and the word so derived is used in the masculine gender as a proper name.
Note: The affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घ’ prescribed by 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः – A अङ्गम् whose final letter is a इक् gets a ‘गुण’ letter (ref. 1-1-2 अदेङ् गुणः) as a substitute, when a ‘सार्वधातुक’ affix or a ‘आर्धधातुक’ affix follows. As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः – A penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

‘अवतार’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) been used in Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: The verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) has been used in the form व्यतितरिष्यति in Chapter Two of the गीता –

    The verbal root √तॄ has no इत् letters in the धातु-पाठ:। Thus √तॄ is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √तॄ takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

    The विवक्षा here is लृँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः। Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
    Note: √तॄ is not अनुदात्तोपदेश: and hence 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ cannot block 7-2-35.
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    ‘वि’ and ‘अति’ are the उपसर्गौ (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (besides 3-3-120 अवे तॄस्त्रोर्घञ् used in step 1) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १.
    Answer: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) in the सूत्रम् 6-4-122 तॄफलभजत्रपश्च also – The letter ‘अ’ of the four verbal roots √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११५३) and √त्रप् (त्रपूँष् लज्जायाम्) takes the letter ‘ए’ as a substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when the affix following is either a –
    (i) लिँट् affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), or
(ii) ‘थल्’ (मध्यम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्) affix which has taken the augment ‘इट्’।

    3. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आपन्न’ derived?
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आपन्न’ is derived from the verbal root √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’।

Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः – The letter ‘न्’ is the replacement in place of the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which immediately follows a रेफ: (the letter ‘र्’) or the letter ‘द्’ and also in place of the letter ‘द्’ which immediately precedes a निष्ठा affix.
    Thus there are two cases:
    (i) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following a रेफ:। In this case the letter ‘त्’ is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।
(ii) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘द्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ (of the निष्ठा affix) as well as the letter ‘द्’ (of the धातु:) is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ह्रस्वादेश: (shortening of a vowel) in the word गृणन्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः prescribes the ह्रस्वादेश: in the word गृणन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृणत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृणत्’ is derived from the verbal root √गॄ (गॄ शब्दे ९. ३३) as follows –

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्ना’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending letter ‘ॠ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘गॄ’ which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः – A short vowel is substituted (in place of the long vowel) of the twenty-four verbal roots पूञ् etc., when a ‘शित्’ affix (an affix having the letter ‘श्’ as a इत्) follows.
The following are the twenty-four roots:
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘अत्’ (‘शतृँ’) is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply.

The derivation of गृणन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृणत्’ is as follows:
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….। Note: The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृणत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which has the letter ‘ऋ’ as a इत्। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
‘गृणन्त्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-16 अज्झनगमां सनि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-16 अज्झनगमां सनि has been used in the derivation of the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘शुश्रूष’ used in the form शुश्रूषमाणानाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रूषमाण’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।
Please see the following post for the derivation of the

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रूषमाण’ is derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘शुश्रूष’ as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि। । ‘शुश्रूषमाण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“It is impossible to exhaustively describe all the descents of the Lord.” Use अशेषेण as an adverb for ‘exhaustively.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः has been used in the form बिभेति derived from the verbal root √भी (ञिभी भये ३. २).

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment ‘सीयुट्’ in the word विमुच्येत?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट् prescribes the augment ‘सीयुट्’ in the word विमुच्येत – derived from the verbal root √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) # ६.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
Note: Since the affix यक् is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुण: substitution (in place of the penultimate letter ‘उ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘मुच्’) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट् – The affixes of लिँङ् get ‘सीयुट्’ as the augment. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘सीयुट्’ is placed before the affix ‘त’।
By The letter ‘उ’ in सीयुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The letter ‘ट्’ is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
