The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निलय’ is derived from the verbal root √ली ((ओँ)लीङ् श्लेषणे ४. ३४) in composition with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’।

By 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण – To denote the instrument or the locus of the action, the affix ‘घ’ is generally used following a verbal root, provided the word so derived is used in the masculine gender as a proper name.
पाणिनि: has used the letter ‘घ्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘घ’ so that he may be able to refer to this specific affix in the सूत्रम् 6-4-96 छादेर्घेऽद्व्युपसर्गस्य।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः – An अङ्गम् whose final letter is a इक् gets a गुण: substitute, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

‘निलय’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण been used in the first seven verses of Chapter Seven of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण has been used in the form प्रलयः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रलय’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रलय’ is derived from the verbal root √ली ((ओँ)लीङ् श्लेषणे ४. ३४) in composition with the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’। The derivation is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निलय’ as shown in the post.

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण the काशिका says – पुंसीति किम्? Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण cannot be used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रसाधन’ since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the neuter gender and not in the masculine gender. So even though the remaining conditions for the application of 3-3-118 are satisfied it cannot be used here.

    The नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रसाधन’ is derived from a causative form of the verbal root √साध् (साधँ संसिद्धौ ५. १९) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ as follows –
By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च – The affix ल्युट् may be used following a verbal root to denote the instrument or the locus of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।

    3. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम् the काशिका says – संज्ञायामिति किम्? Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-118 पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण cannot be used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रहरण’ here since this प्रातिपदिकम् is being used as an adjective to दण्ड: and hence does not denote a proper name. So even though the remaining conditions for the application of 3-3-118 are satisfied it cannot be used here.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रहरण’ is derived from the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ as follows –
By 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च – The affix ल्युट् may be used following a verbal root to denote the instrument or the locus of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 8-4-29 कृत्यचः।
    ‘प्रहरण’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘ड’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुज’?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-98 पञ्चम्यामजातौ prescribes the affix ‘ड’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुज’।

को: (पृथिव्या:) जातः = कुजः – Born from the earth. It refers to the demon नरकः in the verses.

    ‘ज’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुज’ is derived as follows:

कु + ङसिँ + जन् + ड । By 3-2-98 पञ्चम्यामजातौ – When in composition with a पदम् which ends in the fifth (ablative) case, the verbal root √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) may take the the affix ‘ड’ provided the verbal root is used to denote an action in the past tense and the उपपदम् does not denote a class/genus.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-98, the term पञ्चम्याम् ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘कु + ङसिँ’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 6-4-143 टेः। Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having the letter ‘ड्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘ड’।

    Now we form a compound between ‘कु + ङसिँ’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘ज’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

    In the compound, ‘कु + ङसिँ’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘कु + ङसिँ’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्।
    ‘कु + ङसिँ + ज’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    = कु + ज । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये has been used in the form समितिशालिनः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समितिशालिन्’, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

    ‘शालिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √शाड्/शाल् (शाडृँ श्लाघायाम् १.

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समितिशालिन्’ is derived as follows:

    समिति + ङि + शाल् + णिनिँ । By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘समिति + ङि’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।

    We form a compound between ‘समिति + ङि’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘शालिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘समिति + ङि’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    ‘समिति + ङि + शालिन्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    = समितिशालिन् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

By By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘अस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Struck by Śrī Rāma’s arrows, many demons went to the abode of Yama.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘स्य’ in यास्यन्ति?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः prescribes the affix ‘स्य’ in यास्यन्ति – derived from the verbal root √या (या प्रापणे २.

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः – The affixes ‘स्य’ and ‘तासिँ’ are prescribed after a verbal root when followed by ‘लृँ’ (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively. Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the augment ‘इट्’ (for ‘स्य’) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-120 आङो नास्त्रियाम् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-120 आङो नास्त्रियाम् has been used in the form हरिणा (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरि’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।
