Gita Press translation – Thereafter (at the end of the Kalpa) when he sees the whole world below being consumed by the fire proceeding from the mouth of Lord Ananta (Śeṣa), he rises still higher to Brahmā’s abode, where the foremost among the Siddhas reside in their aerial cars and which lasts for two Parārdhas (the full span of Brahmā’s life) (26). There is no grief nor agony, neither old age nor death in that sphere, much less fear of any kind. The only agony they suffer from is the mental anguish they feel out of compassion when they see people who have no knowledge of the process of meditation as described above undergoing repeated births and deaths, that entail endless suffering (27).

जीर्यतेऽनयेति जरा। करणेऽङ्। अथवा – जरणं जरा। भावेऽङ्।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जरा’ is derived from the verbal root √जॄ (जॄष् वयोहानौ ४. २५).

(1) जॄ + अङ् । By 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ् – Following verbal roots which have the letter ‘ष्’ as a marker and the verbal roots enumerated in the list √भिद् (भिदिँर् विदारणे ७. २) etc the affix अङ् is used to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: The verbal roots √भिद् (भिदिँर् विदारणे ७. २) etc are not listed together in the धातु-पाठ:। Instead गणपरिपठितेषु भिदादिषु निष्कृष्य प्रकृतयो गृह्यन्ते – the final forms ‘भिदा’ etc are listed in the भिदादिगण: in the गण-पाठ:। From these forms we have to extract the verbal roots √भिद् (भिदिँर् विदारणे ७. २) etc to which the affix अङ् is prescribed by this सूत्रम्।

(2) जॄ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः but the special सूत्रम् 7-4-16 ऋदृशोऽङि गुणः applies in the next step.

(3) जर् + अ । By 7-4-16 ऋदृशोऽङि गुणः – A अङ्गम् ending in the ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः/ॠकारः) or consisting of the verbal root √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) takes the गुणः substitute when followed by the affix “अङ्”। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, the रेफ: is added to the अकार:।

= जर ।

‘जर’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

(4) जर + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(5) जर + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) जरा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

(7) जरा + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(8) जरा + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) जरा । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix “सुँ”, “ति” or “सि” is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix “ङी” or “आप्”।

Questions:

1. Where has जरा been used in Chapter Two of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ् (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – कथं तर्हि ‘मुखाब्जगन्धलब्धे:’ इति माघः। ‘प्रेक्षोपलब्धि:’ इत्यमरश्च। षित्त्वादङि लभेत्येव ह्युचितम्। सत्यम्। ‘अनर्थकास्तु प्रतिवर्णमनुपलब्धे:’ इति भाष्यप्रयोगाद्बाहुलकाद्वा क्तिन्नपि बोध्यः। Please explain.

3. Commenting on the word पीडा (used as part of the compound मनःपीडा in the commentary) the धातु-वृत्ति: says – भिदादिपाठादङ्। Please explain.

4. Can you recall a गण-सूत्रम् which specifically mentions the verbal root √जॄ (जॄष् वयोहानौ ४. २५)?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-49 यस्य हलः been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Old age is for the body only and not for the soul (Self.)” To express the meaning of ‘for’ use the षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘body’ and ‘Self.’

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix यक् in the form मुच्यन्ते (used in the commentary)?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः been used in the commentary?

  1. 1. Where has जरा been used in Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: जरा has been used in the following verse of Chapter Two of the गीता –
    देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा |
    तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति || 2-13||

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ् (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – कथं तर्हि ‘मुखाब्जगन्धलब्धे:’ इति माघः। ‘प्रेक्षोपलब्धि:’ इत्यमरश्च। षित्त्वादङि लभेत्येव ह्युचितम्। सत्यम्। ‘अनर्थकास्तु प्रतिवर्णमनुपलब्धे:’ इति भाष्यप्रयोगाद्बाहुलकाद्वा क्तिन्नपि बोध्यः। Please explain.
Answer: How do we justify the use of the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लब्धि’ (derived from the verbal root √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ १. ११३०)) found in the quote ‘मुखाब्जगन्धलब्धे:‘ (composed by the famous poet माघ:) and in ‘प्रेक्षोपलब्धि:‘ (in the अमरकोष:)? Since the verbal root √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ १. ११३०)) is a षित् (has the letter ‘ष्’ as a इत्) as per the सूत्रम् 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ् the affix अङ् (and not क्तिन्) should be used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लभा’ (and not ‘लब्धि’)। True. But the affix क्तिन् may also be used (to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लब्धि’) based on the authority of the usage ‘अनर्थकास्तु प्रतिवर्णमनुपलब्धे:‘ found in the महाभाष्यम् or based on the mention of बहुलम् (in the सूत्रम् 3-3-113 कृत्यल्युटो बहुलम्)। Note: Strictly speaking the बहुलम् mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-3-113 कृत्यल्युटो बहुलम् applies only to the affixes having the designation ‘कृत्य’ (ref. 3-1-95 through 3-1-132) and the affix ल्युट् but it may be extended to other कृत् affixes (like क्तिन्) also.

    3. Commenting on the word पीडा (used as part of the compound मनःपीडा in the commentary) the धातु-वृत्ति: says – भिदादिपाठादङ्। Please explain.
Answer: The verbal root √पीड् (पीडँ अवगाहने १०. १७) belongs to the चुरादि-गण:। Hence we first have to add the affix णिच् to get the derived verbal root ‘पीडि’ as follows –

    पीड् + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।
    = पीड् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पीडि । ‘पीडि’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

Now as per the सूत्रम् 3-3-107 ण्यासश्रन्थो युच् the affix युच् (and not अङ्) would be used with the derived verbal root ‘पीडि’ to form a feminine प्रातिपदिकम्। But the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पीडा’ is specifically listed as part of the भिदादि-गण:। Hence as per the सूत्रम् 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ् the affix अङ् (and not युच्) is used to derive the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पीडा’ as follows:

    पीडि + अङ् । By 3-3-104 षिद्भिदादिभ्योऽङ्।
    = पीडि + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पीड् + अ । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।
    = पीड । ‘पीड’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
    पीड + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = पीड + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पीडा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    4. Can you recall a गण-सूत्रम् which specifically mentions the verbal root √जॄ (जॄष् वयोहानौ ४. २५)?
    Answer: जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च – गण-सूत्रम् (in the धातुपाठ:, below the गण-सूत्रम् ‘घटादयो मित:’) – The verbal roots √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४), √जॄ (जॄष् वयोहानौ ४. २५), √क्नस् (क्नसुँ ह्वरणदीप्त्योः ४. ७), √रञ्ज् (रञ्जँ रागे १. ११५४) as well as any verbal root ending in ‘अम्’ are considered to be ‘मित्’ (having the letter ‘म्’ as a इत्)।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-49 यस्य हलः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-49 यस्य हलः has been used in the form दन्दह्यमानम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दन्दह्यमान’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दन्दह्यमान’ is a passive form (कर्मणि प्रयोग:) derived from the यङन्त-धातुः ‘दन्दह्य’।

Please refer to the following link for derivation of the यङन्त-धातुः ‘दन्दह्य’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/20/दन्दह्यते-3as-लँट्/

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दन्दह्यमान’ is derived as follows:
    दन्दह्य + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्। Note: As per 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः the affix यक् has the designation आर्धधातुकम्। This allows 6-4-49 and 6-4-48 to apply below.
    = दन्दह्य + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दन्दह् अ + य + आन । By 6-4-49 यस्य हलः – When preceded by a consonant, the term ‘य’ takes लोपः when followed by a आर्धधातुकम् affix. Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-54 आदेः परस्य only the beginning letter ‘य्’ of the term ‘य’ takes लोपः।
    = दन्दह् + य + आन । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    = दन्दह्य मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक्, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = दन्दह्य म् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दन्दह्यमान । ‘दन्दह्यमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Old age is for the body only and not for the soul (Self.)” To express the meaning of ‘for’ use the षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘body’ and ‘Self.’
    Answer: जरा देहस्य एव न तु अात्मनः = जरा देहस्यैव न त्वात्मनः ।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix यक् in the form मुच्यन्ते (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् prescribes the affix यक् in the form मुच्यन्ते – derived from the verbal root √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) ६. १६६).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    मुच् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = मुच् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मुच् + झ । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
    = मुच् + झे । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे।
    = मुच् + यक् + झे । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् – The affix यक् follows a धातुः when a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)।
Note: Since the affix यक् is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुण: substitution (in place of the penultimate letter ‘उ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘मुच्’) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = मुच्य + झे । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मुच्य + अन्ते । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = मुच्यन्ते । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः is used in the form सन्ति derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०).

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form सन्ति – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/08/24/निविशन्ति-3ap-लँट्/#comment-4391
