विद्या fNs

Today we will look at the form विद्या fNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.4.70.

। ७० ।। ७१ ।।

Gita Press translation – Asceticism and worship (offered to a deity) are both conducive to the highest good (final beatitude) for Brāhmaṇas (endowed with humility and other virtues). In the case (however) of a doer who is lacking in modesty, those very practices lead to contrary results (prove harmful) (70). Therefore, O Brāhmaṇa, may good betide you; approach King Ambarīṣa (the son of Nābhāga) and seek the forgiveness of that highly blessed soul. Then (alone) will peace (of mind) come (to you) (71).

Note: विद्या normally means ‘knowledge/science’ but in the present context it has been interpreted as उपासना = ‘worship.’

विदन्त्यनयेति विद्या derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९).

(1) विद् + क्यप्‌ । By 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः – In order to derive a proper name in the feminine gender the affix क्यप्‌ with a उदात्त: accent is used following any one of the verbal roots listed below to denote either the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or any कारक: except the agent of the action –
(i) √अज् (अजँ गतिक्षेपणयोः १. २६२) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’
(ii) √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’
(iii) √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’
(iv) √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४. ७३)
(v) √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९)
(vi) √सु (षुञ् अभिषवे ५. १)
(vii) √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६)
(viii) √भृ (भृञ् भरणे १. १०४५)
(ix) √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०)
Note: In the present example the affix ‘क्यप्’ denotes the करणम् (instrument of the action).

(2) विद् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

= विद्य ।

‘विद्य’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

(3) विद्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in the letter ‘अ’ get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(4) विद्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(5) विद्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is स्त्रीलिङ्गे, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

(6) विद्या + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(7) विद्या + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) विद्या । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix ‘सुँ’, ‘ति’ or ‘सि’ is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix ‘ङी’ or ‘आप्’।

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्या’ been used independently (not as part of a compound) in the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – भाव इति न स्वर्यते। पूर्व एवात्रार्थाधिकारः। Please explain.

3. Can you spot the affix ‘ट’ in the verses?

4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘चिण्’ (in place of ‘च्लि’) in the form समजनि (used in the commentary)?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-15 अनुनासिकस्य क्विझलोः क्ङिति been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Rāma was endowed with knowledge as well as humility.” Use the affix ‘क्त’ with the verbal root √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’ to create an adjective प्रातिपदिकम् meaning ‘endowed with.’ Use the affix ‘अच्’ (prescribed by 3-3-56 एरच्) with the verbal root √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे १. १०४९) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ to create a masculine noun प्रातिपदिकम् meaning ‘humility.’

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-81 आतो ङितः been used in the verses?

2. Why has no सन्धि-कार्यम् been done between निःश्रेयसकरे + उभे?

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्या’ been used independently (not as part of a compound) in the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्या’ has been used independently in the following verse of the गीता –

    सर्गाणामादिरन्तश्च मध्यं चैवाहमर्जुन ।
    अध्यात्मविद्या विद्यानां वादः प्रवदतामहम्‌ ।। 10-32 ।। The विवक्षा is षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – भाव इति न स्वर्यते। पूर्व एवात्रार्थाधिकारः। Please explain.
Answer: As per the सूत्रम् 1-3-11 स्वरितेनाधिकारः a term marked with a स्वरित-स्वर: (circumflex accent) is a अधिकार: (governing term) that exerts its influence on the rules that follow. The word भावे mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-3-98 व्रजयजोर्भावे क्यप्‌ is not marked with a स्वरित-स्वर: and hence does not carry down to the next सूत्रम् 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः। We revert to the prior अधिकार: of 3-3-18 भावे and 3-3-19 अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम्। Thus the affix क्यप् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-99 is not limited to भावे। It may denote either भावे (the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state) or अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम् (any कारक: except the agent of the action.)

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘ट’ in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘ट’ has been used in the form निःश्रेयसकरे (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निःश्रेयसकर’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-द्विवचनम्)।

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निःश्रेयसकर’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/19/विधिकरीः-fap/#comment-5614

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘चिण्’ (in place of ‘च्लि’) in the form समजनि (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The substitution ‘चिण्’ (in place of ‘च्लि’) in the form समजनि is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-61 दीपजनबुधपूरितायिप्यायिभ्योऽन्यतरस्याम् – When the term ‘त’ (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) follows, there is an optional substitution of ‘चिण्’ in place of ‘च्लि’ when following the verbal root √दीप् (दीपीँ दीप्तौ ४. ४५), √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४), √बुध् (बुधँ अवगमने ४. ६८), √पूर् (पूरीँ आप्यायने ४. ४६), √ताय् (तायृँ सन्तानपालनयोः १. ५६२) or √प्याय् (ओँप्यायीँ वृद्धौ १. ५६१).

Please see the following post for derivation of the form अजनि – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/06/11/अजनि-3as-लुङ्/

    ‘सम्’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    सम् + अजनि = समजनि।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-15 अनुनासिकस्य क्विझलोः क्ङिति been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-15 अनुनासिकस्य क्विझलोः क्ङिति has been used in the form शान्तिम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शान्ति’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

    शमनं शान्तिः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शान्ति’ is derived from the verbal root √शम् (शमुँ उपशमे ४. ९८) as follows –

    शम् + क्तिन् । By 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन् ।
    = शम् + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-9 तितुत्रतथसिसुसरकसेषु च prevents the affix क्तिन् from taking the augment इट्।
= शाम् + ति । By 6-4-15 अनुनासिकस्य क्विझलोः क्ङिति – The penultimate vowel of a अङ्गम् which ends in a nasal consonant is elongated when followed by either i) the affix ‘क्वि’ or ii) an affix which begins with a झल् letter and is either कित् or ङित् – has the letter ‘क्’ or the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्।
    = शां + ति । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
    = शान्ति । By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः।
    ‘शान्ति’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    Answer: श्रीरामः विद्यया विनयेन च सम्पन्नः बभूव = श्रीरामो विद्यया विनयेन च सम्पन्नो बभूव।

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-81 आतो ङितः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-81 आतो ङितः has been used in the form कल्पेते derived from the verbal root √कॢप् (कृपूँ सामर्थ्ये १. ८६६).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, द्विवचनम्।
    कृप् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = कृप् + अ + आते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कर्प् + अ + आते । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = कर्प् + अ + इय् ते । By 7-2-81 आतो ङितः – The letter ‘आ’ of a ङित्-प्रत्ययः (an affix which has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) which follows a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, is replaced by ‘इय्’। Note: Since the affix आताम् has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा (by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्) and does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्, it is ङिद्वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This allows 7-2-81 to apply.
    = कर्प् + अ + इ ते । By 6-1-66 लोपो व्‍योर्वलि।
    = कर्पेते । By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।
    = कल्पेते । By 8-2-18 कृपो रो लः।

    2. Why has no सन्धि-कार्यम् been done between निःश्रेयसकरे + उभे?
Answer: निःश्रेयसकरे is नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-द्विवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निःश्रेयसकर’। The letter ‘ए’ at the end of निःश्रेयसकरे gets प्रगृह्य-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-11 ईदूदेद्द्विवचनं प्रगृह्यम् – A dual number affix ending in the letter ‘ई’, ‘ऊ’ or ‘ए’ gets the designation ‘प्रगृह्य’। Then, as per 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि there is no सन्धि-कार्यम् between the निःश्रेयसकरे and the following अच् (which is the letter ‘उ’ in उभे।) Vowels having the प्रगृह्य-सञ्ज्ञा retain their natural state when followed by a vowel. (This means that no सन्धि-कार्याणि are performed.)
