यज्ञे mLs

Today we will look at the form यज्ञे mLs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 2.7.21.

Translation – And, descending into the worlds as Dhanvantari (a king of Kāśī,) who is glory personified, the Lord, on the very utterance of His name, immediately cures the diseases of men who suffer from numerous ailments. Nay, He won the rank of immortals and got a share in the sacrificial offerings. Again, it was He who taught (to the world) Āyurveda (the science of healthy and long life) (21). When the Kṣatriya race turns out to be the enemy (rather than the protector) of the Brāhmaṇas and abandons the path of virtue, as if courting the tortures of hell, nay, when it becomes a veritable thorn in the side of the world and is exalted by Providence only for its destruction, the Supreme Spirit appears as Paraśurāma of tremendous prowess and exterminates it thrice seven times with His sharp-edged axe (22).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यज्ञ’ is derived from the verbal root  √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १.

By 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ् – Following the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ७४६) the affix ‘नङ्’ may be used to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

Note: The affix नङ् is prohibited from taking the augment इट् by 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति। Also note that 6-1-15 वचिस्वपियजादीनां किति cannot apply here because the affix नङ् is a ङित् and not a कित्।

By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चु: – When the letter “स्” or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (“त्”, “थ्”, “द्”, “ध्”, “न्”) comes in contact with either the letter “श्” or a letter of the च-वर्ग: (“च्”, “छ्”, “ज्”, “झ्”, “ञ्”), then it is replaced respectively by “श्”, च-वर्ग: (“च्”, “छ्”, “ज्”, “झ्”, “ञ्”)।

‘यज्ञ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Words (except याच्ञा which is used in the feminine) derived by using the सूत्रम् 3-3-90 are used in the masculine gender in the language.

The विवक्षा is सप्तमी-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

Questions:

1. In which two chapters of the गीता has यज्ञे been used?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ् (used in step 1) the काशिका says – प्रच्छेरसम्प्रसारणं ज्ञापकात् ‘प्रश्ने चासन्नकाले’ इति। Please explain.

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः been used in the verses?

4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘इस्’ in the form लिप्सति (used in the commentary)?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Chanting the Lord’s Names itself is the best sacrifice.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who performs a hundred sacrifices becomes Indra.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शत’ (in the neuter singular) for ‘hundred’ and use a causative form of the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ for ‘to perform.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix श्नम् in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ध्’ in the form उद्धन्ति?

  1. 1. In which two chapters of the गीता has यज्ञे been used?
Answer: The form यज्ञे has been used in the following verses of the गीता –

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ् (used in step 1) the काशिका says – प्रच्छेरसम्प्रसारणं ज्ञापकात् ‘प्रश्ने चासन्नकाले’ इति। Please explain.
Answer: Adding the affix नङ् to the verbal root √प्रच्छ् (प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम् ६.१४९) should trigger the सम्प्रसारणम् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च। But applying सम्प्रसारणम् would not give us the desired form ‘प्रश्न’ which पाणिनिः himself has used in the सूत्रम् 3-2-117 प्रश्ने चासन्नकाले। Hence we take the सूत्रम् 3-2-117 प्रश्ने चासन्नकाले as an indication/hint that सम्प्रसारणम् is not to be applied in deriving the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रश्न’।

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रश्न’ from the verbal root √प्रच्छ् (प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम् ६.१४९) is as follows:
By 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ्।
Note: The affix नङ् is prohibited from taking the augment इट् by 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति। And as explained above, the ज्ञापकम् from the सूत्रम् 3-2-117 प्रश्ने चासन्नकाले tells us to not apply the सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च here.
    ‘प्रश्न’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः is used in the derivation of the form ब्रह्मध्रुक् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ब्रह्मद्रुह्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌। Now ‘ब्रह्मद्रुह्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-32 दादेर्धातोर्घः।
By 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः – The part (‘द्रुघ्’ in the present example) of a धातुः, which ends in a झष् letter (‘घ्’ in the present example) and has only one vowel, gets its बश् letter (‘द्’ in the present example) replaced by the corresponding भष् letter (‘ध्’ in the present example) when followed by the letter ‘स्’, the term ‘ध्व्’ or at the end of a पदम्
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By 8-4-56 वावसाने।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘इस्’ in the form लिप्सति (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् prescribes the substitution ‘इस्’ in the form लिप्सति (लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्)।

लिप्सति is derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘लिप्स’। Please see the following post for derivation of the

    The विवक्षा in लिप्सति is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। The परस्मैपदम् affix ‘तिप्’ has been irregularly used here. As per 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्, 1-3-62 पूर्ववत् सनः a आत्मनेपदम् affix (‘त’) should have been used.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    Answer: The affix श्नम् has been used in the form अवरुन्धे derived from the verbal root √रुध् (रुधादि-गणः, रुधिँर् आवरणे, धातु-पाठः # ७. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
Note: As per 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् the affix ‘ते’ has the designation सार्वधातुकम् which is required for 3-1-78 to apply below.
By 3-1-78 रुधादिभ्यः श्नम् – The affix श्नम् is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the रुधादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. ‘श्नम्’ is a मित् (has the letter ‘म्’ as a इत्)। Hence as per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात् परः, it is placed after the last vowel (the letter ‘उ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘रुध्’।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘ते’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.
By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि। Note: 8-3-24 is an earlier rule in the अष्टाध्यायी compared to 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि। Hence as per 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, the substitution of the letter ‘ण्’ which would have been done by 8-4-2 is असिद्ध: in the eyes of 8-3-24. Hence 8-3-24 applies.
Note: 8-4-2 cannot apply now because as per 8-2-1, the substitution of the letter ‘न्’ done by 8-4-58 is असिद्ध: in the eyes of 8-4-2.

    ‘अव’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ध्’ in the form उद्धन्ति?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् is used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between उद् + हन्ति = उद्धन्ति/उद्हन्ति। By 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् – When a झय् letter precedes, then in place of the letter ‘ह्’ there is optionally a substitute which is पूर्वसवर्ण: (सवर्ण: with the preceding झय् letter).
