कृत्रिमम् nNs

Today we will look at the form कृत्रिमम् nNs from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 6.3.20.

Gita Press translation – The bellicose Rāvaṇa, O Rāma, is himself self-possessed, and remains active and alert in reviewing his forces (19). Laṅkā again, offers no base for invasion, is difficult to access (even) for gods and inspires terror (in the invader). It has a fourfold defense, consisting of (i) a river (which encircles it on all sides), (ii) a mountain (viz., the Trikūṭa mountain, on whose summit it stands), (iii) a belt of forests (surrounding it) and (iv) an artificial fortification (in the form of an enclosing wall and moats) (20). Standing as it does beyond a sea with a distant shore, it offers no passage for vessels either and the sea is undivided too on all sides, O scion of Raghu! (21) Built on a mountain peak, the aforesaid city of Laṅkā is difficult to access and vies with a celestial city, is packed with horses and elephants and is (therefore) most difficult to conquer (22). Moats and Śataghnīs too as well as engines of various kinds adorn Laṅkā, the city of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa (23).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृत्रिम’ is derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः – To denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, the affix ‘क्त्रि’ may be used following a verbal root which is marked with ‘डु’।
Note: In the धातु-पाठ: there are only nine verbal roots which are marked with ‘डु’। They are as follows – (i) √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ १.

Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः and 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

‘कृत्रि’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-4-20 क्त्रेर्मम् नित्यम् – To denote the sense of ‘accomplished thereby’, the affix ‘मप्’ is necessarily used following a nominal stem which ends in the affix ‘क्त्रि’ (ref. 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः) and used with the instrumental.

Note: The affix ‘मप्’ has the तद्धित-सञ्ज्ञा by 4-1-76 तद्धिताः।

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes “सुँ” and “अम्” that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel “अ” take “अम्” as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix “अम्” there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. In how many places is the गीता has the सूत्रम् 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः been used?
(i) 0 (ii) 1 (iii) 2 (iv) 3.

2. As shown above, the विग्रह-वाक्यम् for कृत्रिमम् is कृत्या निर्वृत्तम्। Shouldn’t it be कृत्र्या  निर्वृत्तम्? In reference to this the Please explain.

3. What would be an alternate form for उत्थित:?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि been used in the verses?

5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix ‘ड’ in deriving the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिखा’?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Bees are not attracted by artificial flowers.” Use the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः to create a प्रातिपदिकम् for ‘bee’ (मधु पिबति)। Use (a passive form) of the verbal root √कृष् (कृषँ विलेखने १. ११४५) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘आङ्’ for ‘to attract.’

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् is used for the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the form पू: (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुर्’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)?

2. Where has the सुत्रम् 3-1-26 हेतुमति च been used in the verses?

  1. 1. In how many places is the गीता has the सूत्रम् 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः been used?
    (i) 0 (ii) 1 (iii) 2 (iv) 3.
    i) 0 – The सूत्रम् 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः has not been used in the गीता।

    2. As shown above, the विग्रह-वाक्यम् for कृत्रिमम् is कृत्या निर्वृत्तम्। Shouldn’t it be कृत्र्या  निर्वृत्तम्? In reference to this the Please explain.
Answer: The affix ‘मप्’ by 4-4-20 is necessarily used following a nominal stem which ends in the affix ‘क्त्रि’ (ref. 3-3-88). Therefore we cannot use the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृत्रि’ by itself, it is invariably followed by the affix ‘मप्’ and denotes the sense of ‘accomplished thereby’. Normally the विग्रह: for कृत्रिमम् would be कृत्र्या  निर्वृत्तम् but since we cannot use the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृत्रि’ by itself, we use an equivalent प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृति’ (formed by using 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन्) and state the विग्रह: for कृत्रिमम् as कृत्या निर्वृत्तम्।

    3. What would be an alternate form for उत्थित:?
Answer: The alternate form is उत्थ्थितः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उत्थ्थित/उत्थित’ is derived from the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘उद्’।

By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: Since the verbal root √स्था is used intransitively (अकर्मक:) the affix ‘क्त’ denotes the agent (कर्तरि) here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-4-55 खरि च।
By 8-4-65 झरो झरि सवर्णे – Following a consonant (हल्), a झर् letter is optionally elided if it is followed by a झर् letter that is सवर्ण: with it.

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि has been used in the form रचिता derived from the verbal root √रच (रच प्रतियत्ने १०.

By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्। This allows the application of the सूत्रम् 6-4-48 अतो लोपः in the next step.
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः। Note: As per 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, the affix ‘णिच्’ would do a वृद्धि: substitution in place of the letter ‘अ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘रच्’। But this does not happen because as per 1-1-57 अचः परस्मिन् पूर्वविधौ, the लोप: done by 6-4-48 has स्थानिवद्-भाव: (it behaves like the item it replaced – the letter ‘अ’) when it comes to an operation (वृद्धि:) that would be performed to the left of it. Hence as far as 7-2-116 is concerned, the उपधा of the अङ्गम् is the letter ‘च्’ and hence it cannot apply.

By 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि – The affix ‘णि’ is elided when followed by a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which has taken the augment ‘इट्’।
‘रचित’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रचिता’ is derived as follows:
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix ‘ड’ in deriving the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिखा’?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-101 अन्येष्वपि दृश्यते justifies the use of the affix ‘ड’ in deriving the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिखा’।

    परिखा is derived from the verbal root √खन् (खनुँ अवदारणे १. १०२०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘परि’।

By 3-2-101 अन्येष्वपि दृश्यते – Even when in composition with a पदम् which is other than the ones mentioned in the preceding rules (from 3-2-97 to 3-2-100), the verbal root √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) may be seen taking the affix ‘ड’ provided the verbal root is used to denote an action in the past tense.
Note: अपिशब्द: सर्वोपाधिव्यभिचारार्थ:। (from सिद्धान्तकौमुदी) – The सिद्धान्तकौमुदी states that by the use of the term ‘अपि’ we can extend this सूत्रम् to verbal roots other than √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. This allows us to apply 3-2-101 here.

Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-101, the term अन्येषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘परि’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 6-4-143 टेः। Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having the letter ‘ड्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘ड’।

Now we form the compound between ‘परि’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘ख’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

Note: Here ‘परि’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्। In the compound, ‘परि’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।

The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिखा’ is derived as follows:
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः prescribes the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the form पू:।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
Now ‘पुर्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-76 to apply in the next step.
By 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः – The penultimate इक् letter (‘इ’, ‘उ’, ‘ऋ’, ‘ऌ’) of a पदम् is elongated when the पदम् ends in the letter ‘र्’ (रेफ:) or the letter ‘व्’ of a धातु:।
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Where has the सुत्रम् 3-1-26 हेतुमति च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सुत्रम् 3-1-26 हेतुमति च has been used in शोभयन्ति which is a causative form derived from the verbal root √शुभ् (शुभँ दीप्तौ १.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च – The affix ‘णिच्’ is used after a verbal root, when the operation of a causer – such as the operation of directing – is to be expressed.
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
