Gita Press translation – Hiraṇyakaśipu said: Mother, O mother, sister-in-law and sons! You ought not to lament the hero (Hiraṇyākṣa). The death of the brave in front of their enemy is praiseworthy and (as such) coveted (by them) (20). The dwelling together in this world of created beings (first) collected at one place (under one roof) and (then) separated by Providence on account of their (past) actions, is (just) like the gathering of men in a shed (on the roadside) containing a reservoir of water (for the wayfarers), O virtuous mother! (21) The soul is eternal (deathless) free from decay, taintless, omnipresent, all-knowing and transcendent. It assumes bodies (of various kinds,) procuring the (numerous) objects of senses by its own Māyā (ignorance) (22).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वध’ is derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).

By 3-3-76 हनश्च वधः – To denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, the affix अप् may be used following the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) when it is not in conjunction with a उपसर्ग: and simultaneously the verbal root takes the substitution ‘वध’ with a उदात्त: accent on its final vowel. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire term ‘हन्’ is replaced by ‘वध’।

The mention of ‘च’ in the सूत्रम् indicates that the affix ‘घञ्’ may also be used here optionally. See question 1.

By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed. Note: The affix अप् has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः

‘वध’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.

The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Questions:

1. What would be the optional final form in this example in the case where the affix घञ् is used (instead of अप्)?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-76 हनश्च वधः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – अनुपसर्गस्येत्येव – प्रघातः। Please explain.

3. Can you spot the affix ‘ड’ in the verses?

4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ईकारादेश: in the form ईप्सितः?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All the gods desired to see the execution of Rāvaṇa.”

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ह्रस्वादेश: – shortening of the (ending) vowel – in the form (हे) अम्ब?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-38 दधस्तथोश्च been used in the verses?

  1. 1. What would be the optional final form in this example in the case where the affix घञ् is used (instead of अप्)?
Answer: The final form would be घातः।

By 3-3-18 भावे।
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु।
By 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
‘घात’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। It is declined like राम-शब्द:।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-76 हनश्च वधः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – अनुपसर्गस्येत्येव – प्रघातः। Please explain.
Answer: By 3-3-76 हनश्च वधः – To denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, the affix अप् may be used following the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) when it is not in conjunction with a उपसर्ग: and simultaneously the verbal root takes the substitution ‘वध’ with a उदात्त: accent on its final vowel.
But when used in conjunction with a उपसर्ग: the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) takes the default affix ‘घञ्’ (prescribed by 3-3-18 भावे) and not the affix ‘अप्’। In the example प्रघातः the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ is present. Hence the affix अप् cannot be used. We instead use the default affix घञ् to get the form प्रघातः (see derivation in answer to question 1 above.)

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘ड’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘ड’ is used in the form सर्वगः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सर्वग’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    ‘ग’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सर्वग’ is derived as follows:
    सर्व + ङस् + गम् + ड । By 3-2-48 अन्तात्यन्ताध्वदूरपारसर्वानन्तेषु डः – The affix ‘ड’ may be used after the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) when in composition with a कर्म-पदम् (a पदम् which denotes the object of the action) which is either ‘अन्त’ or ‘अत्यन्त’ or ‘अध्वन्’ or ‘दूर’ or ‘पार’ or ‘सर्व’ or ‘अनन्त’।

Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-48, the term अन्तात्यन्ताध्वदूरपारसर्वानन्तेषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘सर्व + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।
By 6-4-143 टेः। Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having the letter ‘ड्’ as a इत् in ‘ड’।

    We form a compound between ‘सर्व ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘ग’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

In the compound, ‘सर्व ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘सर्व ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् ।
    ‘सर्व ङस् + ग’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    = सर्व + ग । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ईकारादेश: in the form ईप्सितः?
Answer: The ईकारादेश: (the letter ‘ई’ as a substitute) in the form ईप्सितः is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-4-55 आप्ज्ञप्यृधामीत्‌ – the letter ‘ई’ is substituted for the root-vowel of the following verbal roots when followed by the affix सन् beginning with the letter ‘स्’ (i.e. no augment ‘इट्’) –
४३ (in the causative) , ज्ञपँ ज्ञानज्ञापनमारणतोषणनिशाननिशामनेषु मिच्च १०.

Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ईप्सित’ –

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘तुमुँन्’ in the form शोचितुम् is justified by the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् । Here the verbal root √शुच् (शुचँ शोके १. २१०) occurs in conjunction with the verbal root √अर्ह् (अर्हँ पूजायाम् १. This allows 3-4-65 to apply.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शोचितुम्’ is derived from the verbal root √शुच् (शुचँ शोके १. २१०) as follows –

By 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with any one of the following verbal roots or their synonyms –
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
‘शोचितुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All the gods desired to see the execution of Rāvaṇa.”
    Note: A आत्मनेपदम् affix is used in दिदृक्षाञ्चक्रिरे as per the सूत्रम् 1-3-57 ज्ञाश्रुस्मृदृशां सनः।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ह्रस्वादेश: – shortening of the (ending) vowel – in the form (हे) अम्ब?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-107 अम्बाऽर्थनद्योर्ह्रस्वः prescribes the shortening of the (ending) vowel in the form (हे) अम्ब (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अम्बा’, सम्बुद्धि:।)
Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-38 दधस्तथोश्च been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-38 दधस्तथोश्च has been used to derive the form धत्ते।

Please see answer to question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the form
