Gita Press translation – Full of intense longing some, who were milking (their) cows, darted off leaving the milk-vessel (uncared for); (while) others left as soon as they had placed the milk on the oven (without waiting for its being boiled) and still others went out without removing the (dressed) porridge (from the hearth) (5). Some, who were serving food (to their husbands and other relations) went away neglecting that duty; others, who were feeding their infants with milk gave up that work and ran. Still others, who were waiting upon their husbands, turned their back on them and departed; while some (more), who were dining, bolted away leaving their meal (6). Others, who were bedaubing their person with sandal-paste etc., left that work half-finished; still others who were rubbing and cleaning their person with oily substances, decamped leaving off that work; and some (more), who were painting their eyes with collyrium, put off that work and ran to meet Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Still others sought the presence of Śrī Kṛṣṇa with their garments and jewels wrongly placed (7).

That which is mixed with molasses etc is संयाव:। Hence it means a kind of cake made with wheat flour or a kind of porridge made of wheat flour with ghee, milk and molasses.

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संयाव’ is derived from the verbal root √यु (यु मिश्रणेऽमिश्रणे च २. २७) with the उसर्ग: ‘सम्’।

By 3-3-23 समि युद्रुदुवः – The affix घञ् may be used following the verbal root √यु (यु मिश्रणेऽमिश्रणे च २. १०९४) – provided any one of these verbal roots is in conjunction with the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’ – to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

See question 1.

By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति – A vowel ending अङ्गम् gets a वृद्धिः substitute, when followed by a प्रत्ययः that has ञकारः or a णकारः as an indicatory letter.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः

‘संयाव’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

  1. 1. The affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-23 समि युद्रुदुवः (used in step 1) is a अपवाद: (exception) to which affix?
    Answer: The affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-23 समि युद्रुदुवः is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌।

    2. In the verses can you spot four words in which the augment ‘नुँम्’ has been irregularly used?
Answer: The augment ‘नुँम्’ has been used irregularly in the forms दुहन्त्यः, अश्नन्त्यः, प्रमृजन्त्यः and अञ्जन्त्यः। The grammatically correct forms are दुहत्यः, अश्नत्यः, प्रमृजत्यः and अञ्जत्यः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुहती’ is derived from the verbal root √दुह् (दुहँ प्रपूरणे २. ४) as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: The सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘अत्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) and hence behaves ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्।
‘दुहत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुहती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘दुहत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
Note: Here the अङ्गम् (‘दुह्’) to which the affix ‘शतृँ’ is added does not end in a अवर्णः (it ends in the letter ‘ह्’) । Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-80 आच्छीनद्योर्नुम्। Also the अङ्गम् does not end in the affix ‘शप्’ or ‘श्यन्’ (here the affix ‘शप्’ has taken लुक् elision). Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्।

    The विवक्षा in दुहत्यः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अश्नती’ is derived from the verbal root √अश् (अशँ भोजने ९. ५९) as follows:
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
Note: The सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘अत्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) and hence behaves ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This allows 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः।
‘अश्नत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अश्नती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘अश्नत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
Note: Here the अङ्गम् (‘अश्न्’) to which the affix ‘शतृँ’ is added does not end in a अवर्णः (it ends in the letter ‘न्’)। Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-80 आच्छीनद्योर्नुम्। Also the अङ्गम् does not end in the affix ‘शप्’ or ‘श्यन्’ (it ends in the affix ‘श्ना’)। Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्।

    The विवक्षा in अश्नत्यः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मृजती’ is derived from the verbal root √मृज् (मृजूँ शुद्धौ २. The grammatically correct form for प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् is मृजत्यः। The derivation is similar to दुहत्यः shown above.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अञ्जती’ is derived from the verbal root √अन्ज् (अन्जूँ व्यक्तिम्रक्षणकान्तिगतिषु (व्यक्तिमर्षणकान्तिगतिषु) ७. २१).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
Note: The सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘अत्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) and hence behaves ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This allows 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः।
By 6-4-23 श्नान्नलोपः।
‘अञ्जत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अञ्जती’ is derived similar to the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अश्नती’ shown above.
Note: The अङ्गम् (‘अञ्ज्’) to which the affix ‘शतृँ’ is added does not end in a अवर्णः (it ends in the letter ‘ज्’)। Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-80 आच्छीनद्योर्नुम्। Also the अङ्गम् does not end in the affix ‘शप्’ or ‘श्यन्’। Therefore it cannot take the ‘नुँम्’ augment by 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्।

    The विवक्षा in अञ्जत्यः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    3. What would be an alternate form for लिम्पन्त्यः?
Answer: The alternate form for लिम्पन्त्यः is लिम्पत्यः। This is due to the fact that the augment ‘नुँम्’ is prescribed only optionally by 7-1-80 आच्छीनद्योर्नुम्।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लिम्पती’ is derived from the verbal root √लिप् (लिपँ उपदेहे #६. १६९) as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
    ‘लिम्पत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लिम्पती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘लिम्पत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
Optional नुँम् augment by 7-1-80 आच्छीनद्योर्नुम् – When a term (‘त्’) which is part of the affix ‘शतृँ’ follows an अङ्गम् (in the present example’लिम्प’) ending in the अवर्ण: (the letter ‘अ’ or ‘आ’), then an अङ्गम् ending in such a term takes the नुँम् augment optionally when the affix ‘शी’ or the feminine affix ‘ङी’ follows.
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

    The विवक्षा in लिम्पन्त्यः / लिम्पत्यः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    4. Why is शुश्रूषन्त्यः a आर्षप्रयोग: (an irregular grammatical usage)?
    Answer: By 1-3-57 ज्ञाश्रुस्मृदृशां सनः – A आत्मनेपदम् affix is used after a desiderative form of any of the following verbal roots√ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. But here the affix ‘शतृँ’ (which is a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्) has been used irregularly to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रूषन्ती’। The grammatically correct form is शुश्रूषमाणाः derived by using the affix ‘शानच्’ (which is a आत्मनेपदम् affix as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्।)

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रूषमाणा’ is derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘शुश्रूष’, which is derived from the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. Please see the following post for the derivation of the
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि। । ‘शुश्रूषमाण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रूषमाणा’ is derived as follows:
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    The विवक्षा in शुश्रूषमाणाः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।

1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment ‘युक्’ in the form पाययन्त्यः? Which one prescribes the वकारादेश: in the form पक्वम् used in the commentary?
Answer: The augment ‘युक्’ in the form पाययन्त्यः is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-3-37 शाच्छासाह्वाव्यावेपां युक्

The form पाययन्त्यः is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √पा (पा पाने १.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-3-37 शाच्छासाह्वाव्यावेपां युक्, the verbal roots √शो (शो तनूकरणे ४. १०७४) take the ‘युक्’ augment when the affix ‘णि’ follows. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the ‘युक्’ augment attaches itself to the end of the अङगम् ‘पा’।
Note: The letter ‘उ’ in ‘युक्’ is उच्चारणार्थः (for pronunciation only).

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘पाययत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पाययन्ती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘पाययत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
By 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

    The विवक्षा in पाययन्त्यः is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    The वकारादेश: in the form पक्वम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 8-2-52 पचो वः – The letter ‘व्’ replaces the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which immediately follows the verbal root √पच् (डुपचँष् पाके १.
Please see the following post for derivation of the
Note: In the present example the निष्ठा affix has been used कर्मणि as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Who doesn’t like cakes?” Paraphrase to “Unto whom are cakes not pleasing.” ८४७) for ‘to please.’ To express the meaning of ‘unto’ use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with ‘whom.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Which वार्तिकम् prevents the application of the सूत्रम् 6-4-148 यस्येति च in the form लोचने (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लोचन’, द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्)?
    Answer: The application of the सूत्रम् 6-4-148 यस्येति च in the form लोचने is prevented by the वार्त्तिकम् – औङः श्यां प्रतिषेधो वाच्यः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-19 नपुंसकाच्च।
Now ‘लोचन’ gets भसञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। By 6-4-148 यस्येति च – When the letter ‘ई’ or a तद्धित-प्रत्यय: follows, the (ending) इ-वर्ण: (the letter ‘इ’ or ‘ई’) or the (ending) अवर्ण: (the letter ‘अ’ or ‘आ’) of a अङ्गम् with the भ-सञ्ज्ञा takes लोपः। Here, the conditions for applying 6-4-148 यस्येति च are satisfied. That would have removed the ending letter ‘अ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘लोचन’। But this is prevented by the वार्त्तिकम् – औङः श्यां प्रतिषेधो वाच्यः – 6-4-148 यस्येति च does not apply when the अङ्गम् is followed by the term ‘शी’ that has come as a आदेश: in place of the affix ‘औ’ or ‘औट्’।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    2. From which verbal root is ययुः derived?
    Answer: The form ययुः derived from the verbal root √या (या प्रापणे २. ४४).
Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form
