Gita Press translation – Pṛthu said: O you noble minstrel, herald and singer of praises! Praises may be due to me when my virtues (performances) will be known among men. Where is the ground at present for praises being addressed to me? It is not desirable that your eulogies should prove untrue in my case (22). Therefore, at some future date, when we attain distinctions worthy of being heard and spoken of, you, who are masters of fine expressions, may praise us to your heart’s fill. Respectable persons do not let minstrels extol ordinary men (like me) of the recent times, it being open to them to glorify the greatness of God, whose shining attributes no darkness can touch (23).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्तव’ is derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २. ३८).

The धातुः “ष्टुञ्” has an initial षकारः in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः , there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः। And as per the न्यायः “निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:” (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the टकार-आदेशः for the तकारः, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the षकारः, reverts to the तकारः since the cause for the टकारादेश: no longer exists. So we now have “स्तुञ्”।
The ending ञकारः is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ – The affix अप् may be used following a verbal root ending in a ॠकार: or a उवर्ण: (उकार:/ऊकार:) to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

See question 2.

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः – An अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

‘स्तव’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.

The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Questions:

1. Where has the affix ‘अप्’ been used with the verbal root √कॄ (कॄ विक्षेपे (निक्षेपे) ६. १४५) in Chapter Three of the गीता?

2. The affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ (used in step 1) is a अपवाद: (exception) to which affix?

3. Why is the word अभूवन् used in the verses a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage)?

4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix सन् in the form जुगुप्सितम्?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु been used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Whom are you praising?” Paraphrase to “Whose praise is being done by you?”

Easy questions:

1. In the commentary can you spot two words in which the सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः has been used?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य been used in the commentary?

  1. 1. Where has the affix ‘अप्’ been used with the verbal root √कॄ (कॄ विक्षेपे (निक्षेपे) ६. १४५) in Chapter Three of the गीता?
    Answer: The affix ‘अप्’ been used with the verbal root √कॄ (कॄ विक्षेपे (निक्षेपे) ६. १४५) in the form सङ्करस्य (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सङ्कर’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse of the गीता –

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सङ्कर’ is derived from the verbal root √कॄ (कॄ विक्षेपे (निक्षेपे) ६. १४५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’।
By 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌। Note: The affix ‘अप्’ is used here कर्मणि – to denote the object of the action. ‘सङ्कीर्यते’ इति सङ्कर:।
    = सम् कॄ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सम् कर् + अ = सम् कर । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = सं कर । By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।
By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य।
    ‘सङ्कर/संकर’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    2. The affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ (used in step 1) is a अपवाद: (exception) to which affix?
    Answer: The affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by 3-3-18 भावे and 3-3-19 अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम्।

    3. Why is the word अभूवन् used in the verses a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage)?
Answer: The grammatically correct form is मा भूवन् । By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे – When used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) does not take the augment अट् or आट्। In the form अभूवन् the augment अट् has been used in spite of the fact that there is a connection with माङ्। Hence अभूवन् as used in the verses is a आर्ष-प्रयोग:।
    Note: The ending letter ‘ङ्’ of माङ् is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। So only मा remains.

Please see the following post for derivation of the form
To derive मा भूवन्, we have to use 3-3-175 माङि लुङ् instead of 3-2-110 लुङ् to bring in the affix ‘लुँङ्’। Also note that the steps 11 and 12 in the derivation above are not needed in the present example.

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix सन् in the form जुगुप्सितम्?
    Answer: The affix ‘सन्’ in the form जुगुप्सितम् is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-5 गुप्तिज्किद्भ्यः सन् – The affix सन् is employed after the verbal roots – √गुप् (गुपँ गोपने १.
The derivation of the धातुः ‘जुगुप्स’ is shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/24/जुगुप्सया-fis/

Now we form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जुगुप्सित’ as follows –
    ‘जुगुप्सित’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The विवक्षा in जुगुप्सितम् is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु has been used in the form क्रियमाणः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रियमाण’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रियमाण’ is derived from √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। Note: This is a कर्मणि प्रयोगः। Hence as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, a आत्मनेपदम् affix must be used. As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ (and not ‘शतृँ’) is used here.
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
। By 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु – The ending letter ‘ऋ’ (ऋत्) of a अङ्गम् is replaced by रिङ्, when followed by the affix ‘श’ or the affix ‘यक्’ or यकारादि: (beginning with the letter ‘य्’) आर्धधातुकम् affix of लिँङ्। As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending letter ‘ऋ’ of the अङ्गम् gets replaced.
7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः is not applied after applying 7-4-28 for the following reason – In the अष्टाध्यायी, the सूत्रम् 7-4-27 रीङ् ऋतः comes right before 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु। If पाणिनिः wanted to get the दीर्घादेशः (elongation) then he would have used the अनुवृत्तिः of रीङ् from 7-4-27. The fact that he has introduced रिङ् in 7-4-28 is a ज्ञापकम् (indication) that after applying 7-4-28, the दीर्घादेशः should not be done (by 7-4-25.)
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।
    ‘क्रियमाण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Whom are you praising?” Paraphrase to “Whose praise is being done by you?”

    Easy questions:

    1. In the commentary can you spot two तिङन्त-पदे (words ending in तिङ् affix) in which the सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः has been used?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः has been used in the forms स्यात् and स्तुमः।

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of स्यात् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/04/गृहेषु-nlp/#comment-5084

    The form स्तुमः is derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ३८) as follows –

In the धातु-पाठः, the verbal root ‘ष्टुञ्’ has an initial letter ‘ष्’। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, there is the substitution of the letter ‘स्’ in the place of the initial letter ‘ष्’ of a verbal root. And as per the न्यायः ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the replacement for the letter ‘त्’ by the letter ‘ट्’, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the letter ‘ष्’, reverts to the letter ‘त्’ since the cause for the replacement by the letter ‘ट्’ no longer exists.
    The ending letter ‘ञ्’ of ‘ष्टुञ्’ is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘मस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः – The affix ‘शप्’ takes the ‘लुक्’ elision when following a verbal root belonging to the अदादि-गणः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘मस्’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य has been used in the form यशांसि (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यशस्’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः। By 1-1-42 शि सर्वनामस्थानम्, the affix ‘शि’ gets the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्।
By 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य, when a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix other than a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the letter preceding the letter ‘न्’ of a base that ends in a सान्त-संयोग: (a conjunct ending in the letter ‘स्’) or of the word महत् is elongated.
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
