Today we will look at the form प्रेक्षकः mNs from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2.54.25

Gita Press translation – “Finding me easy to behold at this place, people keen to gaze on Sītā (a princess of Videha kingdom) as well as on myself, I presume, will frequent this hermitage. For this reason I do not approve of my sojourn here (24-25). (Pray, therefore) look for some excellent site for a hermitage in some lonely place, O venerable sir, where Sītā (a princess of the Videha dynasty), daughter of King Janaka, who deserves (every) comfort, may find delight.” (26) Hearing this pious submission (of Śrī Rāma), the great sage Bharadwāja for his part made the following answer pointing out the place sought by Śrī Rāma (a scion of Raghu): – (27) Sixty miles from this place, O dear son, lies a sacred mountain, on which you will take up your abode, which is inhabited by great Ṛṣis and is charming to look at and has a number of offshoots (28).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रेक्षक’ is derived from the verbal root √ईक्ष् (ईक्षँ दर्शने, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. ६९४) along with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’। The अकारः at the end of “ईक्षँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

By 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ – The affix तुमुँन् as well as ण्वुल् may be used following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the future action.
Note: क्रियार्था क्रिया is an action (क्रिया) whose अर्थ: (= प्रयोजनम्) is (another) action (क्रिया)।

Here the action of ‘coming’ (आगमन-क्रिया) is the क्रियार्था क्रिया for the future action of ‘gazing’ (प्रेक्षण-क्रिया)।

By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ – The affixes “यु” and “वु” are substituted respectively by “अन” and “अक”। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix “वु” is replaced by “अक”।

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

‘प्रेक्षक’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Questions:

1. What would be the final form in this example if the affix तुमुँन् were to be used (instead of the affix ण्वुल्)?

2. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (besides 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्) which prescribes the affix ण्वुल्?

3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment ‘इट्’ in the form आगमिष्यति?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके been used in the verses?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśwāmitra came to Ayodhyā (keen) to see King Daśaratha.”

Advanced question:

Could we derive this form using the affix अण् prescribed by 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्? The answer is no. Why not?
The अनुवृत्ति: of कर्मणि runs from 3-2-1 down to 3-2-56. In this section can you find a सूत्रम् which we can use to derive सुखार्हा? Hint: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √अर्ह् (अर्हँ पूजायाम् १. ८४१) in the सूत्रम्।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in the verses?

2. In the verses can you spot a word in which the affix ‘हि’ has taken the लुक् elision?

  1. 1. What would be the final form in this example if the affix तुमुँन् were to be used (instead of the affix ण्वुल्)?
Answer: The final form would be प्रेक्षितुम् had the affix तुमुँन् been used.

By 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ – The affix तुमुँन् as well as ण्वुल् may be used following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the future action.
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    ‘प्रेक्षितुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    प्रेक्षितुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    2. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (besides 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्) which prescribes the affix ण्वुल्?
Answer: The affix ण्वुल् is also prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ may be used after a verbal root.

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment ‘इट्’ in the form आगमिष्यति?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-58 गमेरिट् परस्मैपदेषु prescribes the augment ‘इट्’ in the form आगमिष्यति – derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
    Note: 3-1-33 is an exception
By 7-2-58 गमेरिट् परस्मैपदेषु, when not followed by a आत्मनेपदम् affix, a आर्धधातुकम् affix which begins with the letter ‘स्’ gets the augment इट् when following the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७). 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the augment ‘इट्’ at the beginning of the affix.
Note: In the absence of 7-2-58 गमेरिट् परस्मैपदेषु, the augment इट् would not have been possible because 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ blocks 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः here.
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    ‘आङ्’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके has been used in the form निवत्स्यसि।

    निवत्स्यसि is derived from the verbal root √वस् (वसँ निवासे १. ११६०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘नि’।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
    Note: 3-1-33 is an exception (अपवाद:) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the augment इट् which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके – The letter ‘स्’ gets replaced by the letter ‘त्’ when followed by a आर्धधातुकम् affix which begins with the letter ‘स्’। Note: The affix ‘स्य’ has the designation आर्धधातुकम् by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।

    ‘नि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

Answer: If the affix अण् were to be used, the feminine affix ङीप् (and not टाप्) would have come in by 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः – To denote the feminine gender, the affix ङीप् is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् which satisfies the following conditions:
    (i) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in the letter ‘अ’
    (ii) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a non-secondary affix which is either टित् (has the letter ‘ट्’ as a इत्) or is one of the following – ‘ढ’, ‘अण्’, ‘अञ्’, ‘द्वयसच्’, ‘दघ्नच्’, ‘मात्रच्’, ‘तयप्’, ‘ठक्’, ‘ठञ्’, ‘कञ्’ or ‘क्वरप्’।
Hence we would get the incorrect form सुखार्ही । To get the desired form सुखार्हा we have to use the affix अच् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-12 अर्हः – The affix अच् is used after the verbal root √अर्ह् (अर्हँ पूजायाम् १. ८४१) when in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action.) Note: The affix अच् prescribed by 3-2-12 is an exception (अपवादः) to the affix अण् prescribed by 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्।

    ‘अर्ह’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √अर्ह् (अर्हँ पूजायाम् १.

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सुखार्ह’ is derived as follows:
By 3-2-12 अर्हः।

Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-12 अर्हः – the term कर्मणि (which comes down as अनुवृत्ति: from 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘सुख + ङस्’ (which is the object (कर्म-पदम्) of अर्हति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌। Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।

    We form a compound between ‘सुख + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘अर्ह’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

    In the compound, ‘सुख + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘सुख + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्।
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

Now we form the feminine of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सुखार्ह’ –
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् has been used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between भगवन् + आश्रमस्थानम् = भगवन्नाश्रमस्थानम्।

As per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्, ‘भगवन्’ has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा here.
By 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण् नित्यम् – When there is a ङम् letter (in this case the letter ‘न्’) at the end of a पदम् and this ङम् letter is preceded by a short vowel (in this case the letter ‘अ’), then the following vowel (long or short – in this case the letter ‘आ’ at the beginning of आश्रमस्थानम्) always gets the augment ङमुँट् (in this case नुँट्)। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment नुँट् joins at the beginning of the letter ‘आ’।

    2. In the verses can you spot a word in which the affix ‘हि’ has taken the लुक् elision?
Answer: The affix ‘हि’ has taken the लुक् elision in the form पश्य by the सूत्रम् 6-4-105 अतो हेः – There is an elision of the affix ‘हि’ when it follows a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’।

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form
