भूमिः fNs

Today we will look at the form भूमिः fNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.1.17.

Gita Press translation – An inquiry concerning the story of Lord Vāsudeva indeed purifies all the three persons, viz., the reciter, the interlocator and the audience (even) as the water touched by the Lord’s feet (the water in which an image of the Lord has been washed or the Gaṅgā) hallows all (16). Oppressed with stupendous weight by millions of detachments of Daityas in the disguise of arrogant kings, Mother Earth sought Brahmā (the creator) as her refuge (17). Appearing as a disconsolate cow, its face wet with tears and piteously bellowing, she sought the presence of Brahma (the supreme ruler) and told him of her distress (18).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूमि’ is derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १)

By the उणादि-सूत्रम् 4-45 भुव: कित् – The affix ‘मि’ may be used following the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) and is treated as a कित्। Note: By the सूत्रम् 3-4-75 ताभ्यामन्यत्रोणादयः – The affixes उण् etc may be used to denote a sense other than the dative or the ablative. Here the affix ‘मि’ is used कर्तरि – to denote the agent of the action. भवतीति भूमि: – that which exists is the Earth.

Note: 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति prevents the affix ‘मि’ from taking the augment इट् which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः। Note: The affix ‘मि’ is a कित् by 4-45 भुव: कित्। Therefore, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

‘भूमि’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

‘भूमि’ is a स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूमि’ been used in Chapter Seven of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भूमि’ has been used in the form भूमिः (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the following verse:

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-75 ताभ्यामन्यत्रोणादयः (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ताभ्यामित्यनुक्तौ तु संनिहितापादानस्यैव परामर्शादपादानादन्यत्रेत्यर्थ: स्यात्। Please explain.
Answer: The intent of the सूत्रम् 3-4-75 ताभ्यामन्यत्रोणादयः is to say that उणादिः affixes may be used to denote a sense other than संप्रदानम् (dative) or अपादानम् (ablative.) If पाणिनि: had not mentioned ‘ताभ्याम्’ in 3-4-75 then the अनुवृत्ति: of only ‘अपादान’ would have been taken down from the immediately prior सूत्रम् 3-4-74 भीमादयोऽपादाने and the meaning of the सूत्रम् 3-4-75 would have become – उणादिः affixes may be used to denote a sense other than अपादानम् (ablative.) That would have been undesirable. To avoid this problem, पाणिनि: specifically says ताभ्याम् in the सूत्रम् 3-4-75. ताभ्याम् clearly stands for अपादानसम्प्रदानाभ्याम् and hence the सूत्रम् unambiguously says that उणादिः affixes may be used to denote a sense other than संप्रदानम् (dative) or अपादानम् (ablative.)

    3. Can you spot the augment ‘उम्’ in the verses?
Answer: The augment ‘उम्’ is seen in the form समवोचत।

    समवोचत is derived from the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. As per 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः, ‘ब्रू’ takes the substitution ‘वच्’ when the intention is to add a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:।

Please see the following post for derivation of the form

    ‘सम्’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः has been used in the form खिन्ना (स्त्रीलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘खिन्न’ is derived from the verbal root √खिद् (खिदँ परिघाते (परितापे) ६.
By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: Since the verbal root √खिद् is used intransitively (अकर्मक:), here the affix ‘क्त’ denotes the agent (कर्तरि) as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः – The letter ‘न्’ is the replacement in place of the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which immediately follows the letter ‘र्’ or the letter ‘द्’ and also in place of the letter ‘द्’ which immediately precedes a निष्ठा affix.
    Thus there are two cases:
    (i) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘र्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ is replaced by a letter ‘न्’।
(ii) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘द्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ (of the निष्ठा affix) as well as the letter ‘द्’ (of the धातु:) is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘खिन्ना’ is derived as follows:
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘ण्वुल्’ used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रच्छक’?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ prescribes the affix ‘ण्वुल्’ used in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रच्छक’ derived from the verbal root √प्रच्छ् (तुदादि-गणः, प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम्, धातु-पाठः # ६.

By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ are used to denote the agent of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The serpent Śeṣa carries the entire burden (weight) of the Earth on his (own) head.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः has been used in the form पुनाति derived from the verbal root √पू (पूञ् पवने ९.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘श्ना’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
By 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः – A short vowel is substituted (in place of the long vowel) of the twenty-four verbal roots पूञ् etc., when a शित्-प्रत्ययः follows.

The following are the twenty-four roots:

    2. From which प्रातिपदिकम् is गौ: (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) derived?
Answer: The form गौः is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गो’।

    The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……। ‘सुँ’ gets the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌, the सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes following the letter ‘ओ’ behave as if they have the letter ‘ण्’ as an indicatory letter. Hence ‘सुँ’ behaves like a णित् affix here. This allows 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति to apply and do the वृद्धि: substitution (letter ‘औ’)।
