वर्त्म nAs

Today we will look at the form वर्त्म nAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.8.37.

Gita Press translation – Yet in the heart of my insubordinate self, who has inherited a violent martial spirit – a heart which has been cleft by the shaft-like taunts of Suruci (my stepmother) – the precept has failed to make any abiding impression (36). Be pleased, O holy sage, to tell me a good path, keen as I am to attain to a place which is the highest in all the three worlds and which has not been attained to by (any of) our forefathers or anyone else (37).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर्त्मन्’ is derived from the verbal root √वृत् (भ्वादि-गणः, वृतुँ वर्तने, धातु-पाठः १. The ending उकार: of ‘वृतुँ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By the उणादि-सूत्रम् 4-144 सर्वधातुभ्यो मनिन् – The affix ‘मनिँन्’ may be used after any verbal root. By 3-3-2 भूतेऽपि दृश्यन्ते – The affixes उण् etc may occasionally be seen to be used denoting an action in the past tense also. Note: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘वर्तमाने’ runs from 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट् down to 3-3-1 उणादयो बहुलम्। Hence as per 3-3-1 उणादयो बहुलम् the affixes उण् etc may be used variously to denote an action in the present tense. Now by the सूत्रम् 3-3-2 भूतेऽपि दृश्यन्ते they may be seen to be used only occasionally (as in the case of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर्त्मन्’) to denote an action in the past tense.

Note: 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति prevents the affix ‘मन्’ from taking the augment इट् which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च – When a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its “इक्”-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases:
i) The अङ्गम् ends in a “पुक्”-आगमः।
or
ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

‘वर्त्मन्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

‘वर्त्मन्’ is a नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। The विवक्षा here is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…

By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌, the affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision. Now ‘वर्त्मन्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्

By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending नकार: of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर्त्मन्’ been used in Chapter Three of the गीता?

2. Where has the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् been used in the verses?

3. Can you spot the substitution ‘क्वसुँ’ in the verses?

4. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जिगीषु’ (used in जिगीषोः) derived?

5. From which सूत्रम् do we get the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छु’ (used in इच्छोः in the commentary)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Follow the path of the wise.” Use the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२) with the उपसर्ग: ‘अनु’ for ‘to follow.’

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्तिसर्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः been used in the commentary?

2. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“(You) tell me the truth.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with ‘me.’ Use a word from the verses for ‘(you) tell.’

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर्त्मन्’ been used in Chapter Three of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वर्त्मन्’ has been used in the following verse:
    यदि ह्यहं न वर्तेयं जातु कर्मण्यतन्द्रितः |
    मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः || 3-23||

    वर्त्म + अनुवर्तन्ते = वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। Note: The सूत्रम् 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य has been used to do the नकार-लोप: (elision of the letter ‘न्’) and arrive at the form वर्त्म (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
Now as per 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, this नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य) to arrive at the form वर्त्म should not be visible to any prior rule (in the अष्टाध्यायी)। But 8-2-2 नलोपः सुप्स्वरसंज्ञातुग्विधिषु कृति limits the authority of 8-2-1 and says that the नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7) is not visible only to those rules that are in the four categories mentioned below – others do see the नकार-लोपः।
    The four categories are:
    1. सुँब्विधौ – rules relating to सुँप् affixes
    2. स्वरविधौ – rules relating to accents (in the वेद:)
    3. सञ्ज्ञाविधौ – rules that give names or designations
    4. कृति तुँग्विधौ – rules that prescribe a तुँक् augment in connection with a कृत्-प्रत्यय:।
Since 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः does not fall in any of the above four categories, it does see the नकार-लोपः and hence applies to give वर्त्म + अनुवर्तन्ते = वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते। (This would not have been possible if we did not have 8-2-2 नलोपः सुप्स्वरसंज्ञातुग्विधिषु कृति limiting the application of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्)।

    2. Where has the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् has been used in the derivation of the form साधु (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘साधु’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

By उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् – The affix उण् may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below –
‘साधु’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Can you spot the substitution ‘क्वसुँ’ in the verses?
    Answer: The substitution ‘क्वसुँ’ is seen in the form उपेयुषः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपेयिवस्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

‘उपेयिवस्’ is derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘उप’। Please see the following post for the derivation of ‘उपेयिवस्’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/21/उपेयुषी-nad/

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ङस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। The अङ्गम् ‘उपेयिवस्’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
By 6-4-131 वसोः सम्प्रसारणम्, the अङ्गम् that ends in the ‘वसुँ’ affix and has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा takes सम्प्रसारणम्। Simultaneously, the augment इट् which came in because the affix ‘वसुँ’ was वलादिः goes away since we do not have a वलादि-प्रत्ययः after सम्प्रसारणम्। Recall the परिभाषा ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone.)
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।

    4. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जिगीषु’ (used in जिगीषोः) derived?
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जिगीषु’ is derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘जिगीष’ which in turn is derived from the verbal root √जि (जि जये १. Please see the following post for derivation of the

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जिगीषु’ from the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘जिगीष’।

By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    Since the affix ‘उ’ has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, ‘जिगीषु’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The विवक्षा in जिगीषोः is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।

    5. From which सूत्रम् do we get the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छु’ (used in इच्छोः in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-169 विन्दुरिच्छुः is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छु’ from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).

Please see the following post for the derivation of the

Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्तिसर्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः has been used in the form in the form तिष्ठति।

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for the derivation of the form

    2. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“(You) tell me the truth.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with ‘me.’ Use a word from the verses for ‘(you) tell.’
