The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पवित्र’ is derived from the verbal root √पू (पूङ् पवने १. The ending ङकारः/ञकार: of ‘पूङ्’/’पूञ्’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-2-185 पुवः संज्ञायाम् – To denote the instrument of the action, the affix ‘इत्र’ may be used following the verbal root √पू (पूङ् पवने १. १४) provided the derived word is a proper name.

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, a अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् – Following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affix ‘भिस्’ is replaced by ‘ऐस्’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term ‘भिस्’ is replaced. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “ऐस्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पवित्र’ been used in Chapter Ten of the गीता?
Answer: The नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पवित्र’ has been used in the following verse:

    The विवक्षा in पवित्रम् is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-185 पुवः संज्ञायाम् (used in step 1), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – पूङ्पूञोरुभयोर्ग्रहणमविशेषात्। Please explain.
    Answer: The term पुवः mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-185 पुवः संज्ञायाम् is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of ‘पू’ which is a common reference to the verbal roots पूङ् पवने १. Hence 3-2-185 applies equally to both पूङ् पवने १.

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘डु’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘डु’ is used in the form विभुः (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

Please see the following post for derivation of the

    4. How do we justify the use of the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ in the form ‘क्षयिष्णु’ (used as part of the compound स्वखेदक्षयिष्णु)?
Answer: We’ll have to use the statement from the काशिका (under 3-2-138 भुवश्च) which says that चकारोऽनुक्तसमुच्चयार्थः – meaning that by using ‘च’ in 3-2-138, पाणिनि: gives the suggestion that the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ may sometimes be seen being used following verbal roots other than those specifically mentioned in 3-2-136 to 3-2-138.

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये has been used in जनस्तपःसत्यनिवासिनः (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।)

    ‘निवासिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √वस् (वसँ निवासे १. ११६०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘नि’।

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जनस्तपःसत्यनिवासिन्’ is derived as follows:

By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘जनस्तपःसत्य + सुप्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

    We form a compound between ‘जनस्तपःसत्य + सुप्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘निवासिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘जनस्तपःसत्य + सुप्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Knowledge is the best instrument of purification.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उत्तम’ for ‘best.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः is used for the ह्रस्वादेशः (letter ‘ऋ’) in the form अगृणन् derived from √गॄ (गॄ शब्दे ९.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
By 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः, a short vowel is substituted (in place of the long vowel) of the twenty-four verbal roots √पूञ् (पूञ् पवने ९. १४) etc., when a शित्-प्रत्ययः follows. Note: The verbal root √गॄ (गॄ शब्दे ९. ३३) is among the twenty-four verbal roots beginning with √पूञ् (पूञ् पवने ९.
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘अन्त्’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply.
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the ‘उवँङ्’ substitution in the form अस्तुवन् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ prescribes the ‘उवँङ्’ substitution in the form अस्तुवन् derived from √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ३८).

The verbal root ‘ष्टुञ्’ has an initial letter ‘ष्’ in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, there is the substitution of the letter ‘स्’ in the place of the initial letter ‘ष्’ of a verbal root. And by the परिभाषा ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, it’s effect is also gone) the substitute letter ‘ट्’ for the letter ‘त्’, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the letter ‘ष्’, reverts to the letter ‘त्’ since the cause for the substitution ‘ट्’ no longer exists.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘अन्त्’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
By 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियँङुवँङौ, if a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the प्रत्यय: ‘श्नु’ or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: (‘इ’ or ‘ई’) or उवर्ण: (‘उ’ or ‘ऊ’) of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word ‘भ्रू’।
Note: As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च only the ending letter of the अङ्गम् ‘स्तु’ is replaced by ‘उवँङ्’।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।
