दंष्ट्रया fIs

Today we will look at the form दंष्ट्रया fIs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.7.46.

Translation – Appearing as the mighty Boar, it was You who sportfully lifted the earth out of the depths of the ocean with Your tusk – even as a lordly elephant would lift a lotus plant – roaring and being glorified by the Yogīs. Nay, the Vedas constitute Your very body and You are both the institution of sacrifice and the vow to perform a sacrifice (46). Therefore, be gracious to us, whose noble undertaking (in the shape of this sacrifice) was interrupted and who were (therefore) longing for Your sight. Interruptions in sacrificial performances disappear when, O Lord of sacrifices, Your name is chanted by men. Hail to You! (47)

दशन्त्यनया = दंष्ट्रा ।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दंष्ट्र’ is derived from the verbal root √दंश् (दन्शँ दशने १. ११४४).

(1) दन्श् + ष्‍ट्रन् । By 3-2-182 दाम्नीशसयुयुजस्तुतुदसिसिचमिहपतदशनहः करणे – To denote the instrument of the action, the affix ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below –

Note: As per the न्यायः “निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:” (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the टकारादेशः for the तकारः, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the षकारः in ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’, now reverts to the तकारः since the cause for the टकारादेश: no longer exists

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “त्र”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

(3) दन्ष् + त्र । By 8-2-36 व्रश्च-भ्रस्ज-सृज-मृज-यज-राज-भ्राजच्छशां षः – The seven verbal roots listed – √व्रश्च् (ओँव्रश्चूँ छेदने ६. १२), √भ्रस्ज् (भ्रस्जँ पाके ६. ४), √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०), √मृज् (मृजूँ शुद्धौ २. ६१), √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७), √राज् (राजृँ दीप्तौ १. ९५६) and √भ्राज् (टुभ्राजृँ दीप्तौ १. ९५७) – and terms ending in the letter ‘छ्’ or the letter ‘श्’ get the letter ‘ष्’ as a replacement, when they are at the end of a पदम् or are followed by a झल् letter.
Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter is replaced by the letter ‘ष्’।

(4) दंष् + त्र । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि – नकारः and मकारः which do not occur at the end of a पदम् get अनुस्वारः as replacement when a झल् letter follows.

(5) दंष्ट्र । By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः -When the letter ‘स्’ or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (‘त्’, ‘थ्’, ‘द्’, ‘ध्’, ‘न्’) comes in contact with either the letter ‘ष्’ or a letter of the ट-वर्ग: (‘ट्’, ‘ठ्’, ‘ड्’, ‘ढ्’, ‘ण्’) then it is replaced respectively by ‘ष्’, ट-वर्ग: (‘ट्’, ‘ठ्’, ‘ड्’, ‘ढ्’, ‘ण्’).

‘दंष्ट्र’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)। Since the affix ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’ contains the letter ‘ष्’ as a ‘इत्’, 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च would apply. As per 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च – In the feminine gender the affix ‘ङीष्’ is prescribed following a प्रातिपदिकम् which either (i) contains the letter ‘ष्’ as a ‘इत्’ or (ii) belongs to the class of words beginning with ‘गौर’।
But instead 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ is applied because पाणिनि: specifically mentions ‘दंष्ट्रा’ in the अजादि-गण:।

(6) दंष्ट्र + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(7) दंष्ट्र + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) दंष्ट्रा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

(9) दंष्ट्रा + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(10) दंष्ट्रा + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(11) दंष्ट्रे + आ । By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ‘आप्’ ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix “आङ्” (“टा”) or “ओस्”।

(12) दंष्ट्रया । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. In which chapter of the गीता has ‘दंष्ट्रा’ been used (part of a compound)?
Answer:’दंष्ट्रा’ has been used (part of a compound) in chapter Eleven in the following verses:

Please explain.
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दंष्ट्र’ ends in the affix ‘ष्ट्रन्’ which has the letter ‘ष्’ as a इत्। Hence to create the feminine form of ‘दंष्ट्र’, we should apply the feminine affix ‘ङीष्’ as per 4-1-41 षिद्गौरादिभ्यश्च – In the feminine gender the affix ‘ङीष्’ is prescribed following a प्रातिपदिकम् which either (i) contains the letter ‘ष्’ as a ‘इत्’ or (ii) belongs to the class of words beginning with ‘गौर’।
But in fact the affix ‘टाप्’ (and not ‘ङीष्’) is used to give the feminine form ‘दंष्ट्रा’। How is this justified? One explanation given is that the prescription of the feminine affix ‘ङीष्’ following प्रातिपदिकानि which end in a षित् (having the letter ‘ष्’ as a इत्) affix is अनित्य: (not always followed.) Hence we see some examples such as ‘दंष्ट्रा’ where ‘ङीष्’ is not used in spite of the प्रातिपदिकम् ending in a षित् affix.
Some other grammarians say that पाणिनि: specifically mentions ‘दंष्ट्रा’ in the अजादि-गण: (ref. 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्) enabling ‘टाप्’ to apply (over-ruling ‘ङीष्’)।

    3. In which two words in the verses has 7-2-82 आने मुक् been used?
    Answer: 7-2-82 आने मुक् has been used in the words स्तूयमानः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्तूयमान’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and कीर्त्यमाने (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कीर्त्यमान’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्तूयमान’ is a passive form (कर्मणि प्रयोग:) derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २. ३८).
    स्तु + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = स्तु + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्तू + य + आन । By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः।
    = स्तूय + मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment ‘मुँक्’ joins after the letter ‘अ’।
    = स्तूय म् + आन = स्तूयमान । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    ‘स्तूयमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कीर्त्यमान’ is a passive form (कर्मणि प्रयोग:) derived from the verbal root √कॄत् (कॄतँ संशब्दने १०. १५५)
    कॄत् + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।
    = कॄत् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = किर् त् + इ । By 7-1-101 उपधायाश्च, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = कीर्ति । By 8-2-78 उपधायां च। ‘कीर्ति’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    कीर्ति + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = कीर्ति + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कीर्त् + य + आन । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।
    = कीर्त्य + मुँक् आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment ‘मुँक्’ joins after the letter ‘अ’।
    = कीर्त्य म् + आन = कीर्त्यमान । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    ‘कीर्त्यमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Can you spot the affix ‘घिनुँण्’ in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘घिनुँण्’ has been used in the form योगिभिः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘योगिन्’, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)।

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘योगिन्’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/11/योगिनः-mnp/

    योगिन् + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Now ‘योगिन्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने।
    = योगि + भिस् । By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।
    = योगिभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    5. Which कृत्य-प्रत्यय: is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शक्य’ (used as part of the compound अशक्यम् in the commentary)?
    Answer: The affix ‘यत्’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शक्य’। By the सूत्रम् 3-1-99 शकिसहोश्च – The affix यत् may be used following the verbal root √शक् (शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७) or √सह् (षहँ मर्षणे १. ९८८).

Please refer to the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शक्य’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/13/शक्यः-mns/

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“With a piece of his own tusk, Śrī Gaṇeśa wrote the Mahābhāratam narrated by Vyāsa.” Use the masculine/neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘खण्ड’ for ‘piece.’
    Answer: स्वस्या: दंष्ट्रायाः खण्डेन श्रीगणेशः व्यासेन कथितम् महाभारतम् लिखितवान् = स्वस्या दंष्ट्रायाः खण्डेन श्रीगणेशो व्यासेन कथितं महाभारतं लिखितवान्।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् is used to get नदन् + लीलया = नदँल्लीलया?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-4-60 तोर्लि is used in the सन्धिकार्यम् between नदन् + लीलया = नदँल्लीलया।
By 8-4-60 तोर्लि – When the letter ‘ल्’ follows, then in place of any of the five dental letters (‘त्’, ‘थ्’, ‘द्’, ‘ध्’, ‘न्’) there is a substitute which is परसवर्ण: (सवर्ण: with the following letter ‘ल्’)। This implies that ‘त्’, ‘थ्’, ‘द्’ or ‘ध्’ changes to ‘ल्’; but ‘न्’ changes to ‘ल्ँ’।

    2. Where has 6-4-105 अतो हेः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-105 अतो हेः is used in the form प्रसीद derived from the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०). The beginning letter ‘ष्’ of the verbal root ‘षद्ऌँ’ is substituted by the letter ‘स्’ as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः। The ending letter ‘ऌ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    The विवक्षा is लोँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    सद् + लोँट् । By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
    = सद् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सद् + सिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = सद् + सि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सद् + हि । By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
    = सद् + शप् + हि । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
= सीद । By 6-4-105 अतो हेः – There is an elision of the affix ‘हि’ when it follows an अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’।

    ‘प्र’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    प्र + सीद = प्रसीद ।

Note: प्रसीद can also be derived from √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु ६. १६४). Steps are same as above, except that the गण-विकरण: is ‘श’ (instead of ‘शप्’)।
