  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) been used along with the उपसर्ग: ‘श्रत्’ in the last five verses of Chapter Twelve of the गीता?
११) been used along with the उपसर्ग: ‘श्रत्’ in the compound श्रद्दधानाः in the following verse:

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्रद्दधान’ is derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) along with the उपसर्ग: ‘श्रत्’। The term ‘श्रत्’ is treated as a उपसर्ग: as per the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-106 आतश्चोपसर्गे) श्रदन्तरोरुपसर्गवद् वृत्तिः। Steps are as follows:
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः।
By 6-1-10 श्लौ। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-10 before applying 6-4-112.
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘आन’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकम् अपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply.
By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of ‘जस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयो: पूर्वसवर्ण:।

    2. Can you recall a सूत्रम् (besides 3-2-158 स्पृहिगृहिपतिदयिनिद्रातन्द्राश्रद्धाभ्य आलुच् used in step 1) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the affix ‘आलु’?
    Answer: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the affix ‘आलु’ in the सूत्रम् 6-4-55 अयामन्ताल्वाय्येत्न्विष्णुषु – The affix ‘णि’ is substituted by ‘अय्’ when followed by any one of the following affixes – ‘आम्’, ‘अन्त’, ‘आलु’, ‘आय्य’, ‘इत्नु’ or ‘इष्णु’।

    3. What does the comment आद्यास्त्रयश्चुरादावदन्ता: (from सिद्धान्तकौमुदी) on the सूत्रम् 3-2-158 स्पृहिगृहिपतिदयिनिद्रातन्द्राश्रद्धाभ्य आलुच् mean?
Answer: The first four verbal roots mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-158 स्पृहिगृहिपतिदयिनिद्रातन्द्राश्रद्धाभ्य आलुच् belong to the चुरादिगणः and they are अदन्ताः (end in the letter ‘अ’)।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् been used in the verses? Where has it been used in the commentary?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् has been used in the forms जुषमाणः in the verses and सेवमानः in the commentary.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जुषमाण’ is derived from the verbal root √जुष् (जुषीँ प्रीतिसेवनयोः ६. ८).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः। Note: Since the affix ‘श’ is a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: which is अपित्, it becomes ङित्-वत् (as if it has ङकार: as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent the गुणादेश: for the penultimate उकार: of the अङ्गम् ‘जुष्’ which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – A अकार: belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment मुँक् joins after the अकार:।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सेवमान’ is similarly derived from the verbal root √सेव् (षेवृँ सेवने १. The beginning letter ‘ष्’ of the verbal root ‘षेवृँ’ is replaced by the letter ‘स्’ as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – A अकार: belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment मुँक् joins after the अकार:।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the इकारादेश: in ‘स्थित’?
    Answer: By 7-4-40 द्यतिस्यतिमास्थामित्ति किति – A इकार: is substituted in place of the final letter of the verbal roots √दो (दो अवखण्डने ४. १०७७) when followed by an affix which is कित् (has ककार: as a इत्) and begins with a तकार:।

Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्थित’ –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/12/स्थितः-mns/

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“If you had not been (habitually) lazy (which clearly you were) you would have completed the job.” Use the verbal root √आप् (आपॢँ व्याप्तौ ५. १६) with the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’ for ‘to complete.’ Use 3-2-158 स्पृहिगृहिपतिदयिनिद्रातन्द्राश्रद्धाभ्य आलुच् to derive a प्रातिपदिकम् for ‘(habitually) lazy.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-17 जसः शी been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-17 जसः शी has been used in the form सर्वे (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “सर्व”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।
Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for the derivation – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/03/03/विनशिष्यन्ति-3ap-लृँट्/#comment-3442

    2. Which सूत्रम् justifies the used of the alternate form मा in the place of माम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अस्मद्’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?
Answer: By 8-1-23 त्वामौ द्वितीयायाः – The प्रातिपदिके ‘युष्मद्’ and ‘अस्मद्’ along with a singular affix of the second case, get ‘त्वा’ and ‘मा’ as replacements respectively when the following conditions are satisfied:
    1. There is a पदम् in the same sentence preceding ‘युष्मद्’/’अस्मद्’। (In the present example भजतो is preceding मा)।
    2. ‘युष्मद्’/’अस्मद्’ is not at the beginning of a metrical पाद:।
