Gita Press translation – When intending to create bodies (as a means of enjoyment) for the Jīva (the individual soul), the aforesaid Supreme evolves (the element of) Rajas as a distinct entity (out of the chaos hitherto prevailing) by His own Māyā (creative energy). (Nay), keen to sport in the midst of (all) these heterogeneous bodies, the omnipotent Lord evolves the Sattvaguṇa and when about to retire (from His sportful activities), He fosters the element of Tamas (10). The Lord, who is the infallible Creator (of the universe) in conjunction with Prakṛti and Puruṣa (the grounds of creation), O ruler among men, brings forth the running Time, which stands as the support (an assistant) of Prakṛti and Puruṣa. Now that which goes by the name of Time, O Parīkṣit, fosters the element of Sattva (at the dawn of creation); hence the Lord too, who enjoys an extensive fame, fosters as it were the host of gods as their friend and exterminates their enemies, the Asuras, dominated as they are by Rajas and Tamas (11).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शयिष्यमाण’ is derived from the verbal root √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६).

The ङकार: at the end of ‘शीङ्’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Therefore as per 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्, √शी takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः।

By 3-3-13 लृट् शेषे च – With or without the presence of a क्रियार्था क्रिया (an action meant or intended for another action), the affix लृँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future.

3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा – An affix which is designated as ‘सत्’ (ref. 3-2-127) optionally replaces लृँट् । Note: As per 3-2-127 तौ सत्‌ – The two affixes ‘शतृँ’ and ‘शानच्’ are designated as ‘सत्’। Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। And as explained above, √शी is आत्मनेपदी। Hence ‘शानच्’ is chosen and not ‘शतृँ’।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively. Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “इट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुणादेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – A अकार: belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the “मुँक्”-आगम: joins after the अकार:।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि – The letter “न्” is replaced by “ण्” when either “र्” or “ष्” precedes, even if intervened by a letter of the अट्-प्रत्याहार: or by a letter of the क-वर्ग: or प-वर्गः or the term “आङ्” or “नुँम्” (अनुस्वारः) either singly or in any combination.

‘शयिष्यमाण’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा (used in step 3) been used in Chapter One of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा has been used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘योत्स्यमान’ in the form योत्स्यमानान्।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘योत्स्यमान’ is derived from the verbal root √युध् (दिवादि-गणः, युधँ सम्प्रहारे, धातु-पाठः ४.
By 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा – An affix which is designated as ‘सत्’ (ref.
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः। Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 8-4-55 खरि च।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “शस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च has been used in the form सिसृक्षुः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष”।
    As per 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च – The affix सन् is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it begins with a झल् letter and follows a consonant adjoining a इक् letter.
Please see answer to question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of the form

    3. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ in the verses?
Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ is used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ in the form चरन्तम्।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थः भक्षणेऽपि १.६४०) as follows:
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे। ‘चरत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The derivation of the form चरन्तम् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘चरत्’ is similar to the derivation of अजानन्तम् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘अजानत्’ shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/02/10/अजानन्तम्-mas/

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the नकारलोप: in the form हिनस्ति used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-23 श्नान्नलोपः is used for the नकारलोप: in the form हिनस्ति derived from the verbal root √हिन्स् (रुधादि-गणः, हिसिँ हिंसायाम्, धातु-पाठः # ७. १९).
Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the form
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/10/24/हिंस्यात्-3as-विधिलिँङ्/#comment-1493

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“What should a man who is about to die do? (He) should chant the Names of the Lord.”

    Advanced question:

    1. In the verses, can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् which is a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage)?
    Answer: The तिङन्तं पदं प्रमिणोति is a आर्ष-प्रयोग:। The grammatically correct form is प्रमिनोति।

    प्रमिनोति is derived from the verbal root √मि (डुमिञ् प्रक्षेपने ५. ४) as follows:

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “श्नु” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending इकार: of the अङ्गम् “मि” which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    Note: As per the सूत्रम् 8-4-15 हिनुमीना – The नकारः of ‘हिनु’ and ‘मीना’ gets णकारः as a replacement, when it follows an उपसर्गः that has the निमित्तम् (cause – रेफः, षकारः) to bring about णत्वम्।
In the present example प्रमिनोति we do not have either ‘हिनु’ or ‘मीना’। So the णत्वम् in प्रमिणोति cannot be justified.

    Easy questions:

    1. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः apply in the form पूर्षु used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः does not apply in the form पूर्षु because of the नियम-सूत्रम् 8-3-16 रोः सुपि – When सुप्-प्रत्यय: (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) follows, only ‘रुँ’ gets विसर्गः as a replacement, not any other रेफ:।
Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of the form पूर्षु – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/05/रिरंसुः-mns/#comment-3965

    2. Can you spot the affix ‘श’ in the verses? Can you spot it (in a different word) in the commentary?
Answer: In the verses, the affix ‘श’ is seen in the form सृजति derived from the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६.
Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the form
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/03/28/उत्स्रक्ष्ये-1as-लृँट्/#comment-3550

    In the commentary, the affix ‘श’ is seen in the form स्फुरति derived from the verbal root √स्फुर् (स्फुरँ सञ्चलने | स्फुरँ स्फुरण इत्येके ६.
Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the form
