Gita Press translation – Pray, give me leave, O Lord, to go, so that I may move about the (fourteen) worlds flooded with Your glory, singing loudly the story of Your pastimes, which is capable of purifying the (whole) world (39). The Lord replied: O sage, I am not only the Teacher of Dharma, but I practice it Myself, and lend countenance to (those who practice) it. I follow the path of Dharma in order to teach the world (by My example.) (Therefore,) do not get perplexed, My son, (at the sight of this My Yogamāyā.)

“कर्तृ” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०)

By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes “ण्वुल्” and “तृच्” may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, these affixes are used in the sense of the agent of the action.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “कृ”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।

By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, “ऋत्” (short “ऋ”) ending terms, as well as the terms “उशनस्”, “पुरुदंसस्” and “अनेहस्” get the “अनँङ्” replacement when the “सुँ” suffix, that is not सम्बुद्धिः, follows. As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च , only the ending ऋकार: of “कर्तृ” is replaced.

By 6-4-11 अप्-तृन्-तृच्-स्वसृ-नप्तृ-नेष्टृ-त्वष्टृ-क्षत्तृ-होतृ-पोतृ-प्रशास्तॄणाम् – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of “अप्”, of words ending in affixes “तृन्” and “तृच्” and of the words “स्वसृ”, “नप्तृ”, “नेष्टृ”, “त्वष्टृ”, “क्षत्तृ”, “होतृ”, “पोतृ” and “प्रशास्तृ” is elongated.

By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात् सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix “सुँ”, “ति” or “सि” is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix “ङी” or “आप्”।

Now “कर्तान्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending नकार: of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

  1. 1. Where has the form कर्ता been used in Chapter Three of the गीता?
Answer: The form कर्ता has been used in the following verses:

    2. Commenting on the सू्त्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says तृचश्चकारस्तु ‘तुरिष्ठेमेयस्सु’ ‘तुश्छन्दसि’ इत्यादौ सामान्यग्रहणाविघातार्थः। Please explain.
Answer: The purpose of having चकारः as a इत् in the affix ‘तृच्’ is to enable पाणिनिः to refer collectively (सामान्य-ग्रहणम्) to the affixes ‘तृच्’ and ‘तृन्’ in rules such as 6-4-154 तुरिष्ठेमेयस्सु and 5-3-59 तुश्छन्दसि । The term तुः (षष्ठी-एकवचनम् in 6-4-154 and पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् in 5-3-59) is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तृ’।
If पाणिनि: had not used the चकार: as a अनुबन्ध: in the affix ‘तृच्’ then rules such as 6-4-154 and 5-3-59 would have referred to this affix only. They would not have been able to refer to the affix ‘तृन्’ also. This is due to the परिभाषा “निरनुबन्धकग्रहणे न सानुबन्धकस्य” which means that “when a term devoid of any अनुबन्ध: is employed in grammar it does not denote that which has a अनुबन्ध: attached to it.”

    3. (In a different context) could कर्ता be a तिङन्तं पदम्?
    Answer: कर्ता could be a तिङन्तं पदम् derived from √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८.

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।
By 6-4-143 टेः।
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the ककारादेशः in the form वक्ता?
    Answer: ii) 8-2-30

    वक्ता is derived from the कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “वक्तृ” derived from √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८).
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तृ”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-30 चोः कुः – The consonants of the च-वर्ग: (च्, छ्, ज्, झ्, ञ्) get the consonants of the क-वर्ग: (क्, ख्, ग्, घ्, ङ्) as a replacement when they occur at the end of a पदम् or when they are followed by a झल् letter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, 1-1-53 ङिच्च।
Now “वक्तान्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    5. Where has लुँङ् been used in the verses?
Answer: The affix लुँङ् has been used in the form मा खिदः derived from the verbal root √खिद् (खिदँ परिघाते (परितापे) ६. This is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः। The grammatically correct form is मा खैत्सीः।

The grammatically correct form is derived as follows:
By 3-3-175 माङि लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् must be used after a verbal root when used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्”।
Note: This rule debars the use of any other लकार: after a verbal root when used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्”।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “स्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-2-3 वदव्रजहलन्तस्याचः।
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) does not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
By 8-4-55 खरि च।

In the form मा खिदः, the affix ‘अङ्’ has been used irregularly. The derivation would be as follows:
By ? Note: The use of ‘अङ्’ is not grammatically justifiable here.
Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) does not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
A wise man never thinks that “I am the doer.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-4-60 तोर्लि been used in the verses? Where has it been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-4-60 तोर्लि has been used in the verses in the सन्धिकार्यम् between उद्गायन् + लीलाम् = उद्गायँल्लीलाम् and in between शिक्षयन् + लोकम् = शिक्षयँल्लोकम्।
By 8-4-60 तोर्लि – When the letter “ल्” follows, then in place of any of the five dental letters (“त्”, “थ्”, “द्”, “ध्”, “न्”) there is a substitute which is परसवर्ण: (सवर्ण: with the following letter “ल्”)। This implies that “त्”, “थ्”, “द्” or “ध्” is replaced by “ल्”; but “न्” is replaced by “ल्ँ”।

It has been used in the commentary in the सन्धिकार्यम् between तस्मात् + लोकम् = तस्माल्लोकम्।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the मकारादेशः in the form इमम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-109 दश्च has been used for the मकारादेशः in the form ‘इमम्’ derived from the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्” ।

। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-2-109 दश्च, the दकारः of ‘इदम्’ gets मकारः as a replacement when a विभक्तिः affix follows.
By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।
