Gita Press translation – “A boon has been conferred on him by Me to the effect that death will surely not come to him through any wet or dry substance. Hence any other contrivance should be thought of by you for (the death of) this enemy, O Maghavā (Indra)!” (38) Hearing that ethereal voice, Indra fully composed his mind and contemplated; and presently he discovered a means in the shape of foam (of the sea), which combined both (the aforesaid) attributes (and could not therefore be called exclusively dry or wet) (39). With that foam, which was neither dry nor wet, he severed the head of Namuci; (and) hosts of sages glorified him and showered flowers on the mighty Indra (40).

“चिन्तनीय” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √चिन्त् (चुरादि-गणः, चितिँ स्मृत्याम्, धातु-पाठः # १०. २)

The इकारः at the end of “चितिँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। Therefore this धातुः is an इदित्।

By 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः – A धातुः which has इकारः as an इत् gets the नुँम्-आगमः। As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम् augment attaches itself after the last vowel (the इकार:) of the अङ्गम् “चित्”।

By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच् – The affix णिच् is used after these words – “सत्य” ‘truth’ (which then takes the form of “सत्याप्” as exhibited in the सूत्रम्), “पाश” ‘fetter’, “रूप” ‘form’, “वीणा” ‘lute’, “तूल” ‘cotton’, “श्लोक” ‘celebration’, “सेना” ‘army’, “लोमन्” ‘hair of the body’, “त्वच” ‘skin’, “वर्मन्” ‘mail’, “वर्ण” ‘color’, “चूर्ण” ‘powder’ and the verbal roots belonging to the चुरादि-गणः।

By 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः – The affixes “तव्यत्”, “तव्य” and “अनीयर्” may be used after a verbal root. Note: Since the सूत्रम् 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः occurs in the अधिकारः of ‘3-1-95 कृत्याः’ the affix ‘अनीयर्’ gets the designation ‘कृत्य’। And as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः the affix ‘अनीयर्’ is used here कर्मणि (to denote the object).

By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि – The “णि”-प्रत्यय: is elided when followed by an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which does not have the augment इट्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।

By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः has been used in the form तुष्टुवुः derived from the धातुः √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. The beginning षकार: of “ष्टुञ्” is replaced by a सकार: as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः and then the टकार: reverts to a तकार: as per the परिभाषा – निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:। The ending ञकार: of “ष्टुञ्” is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, “उस्” is कित् here. This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ।
By 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः, if a अभ्यास: begins with a शर्-खय् conjunct (a conjunct whose first letter belongs to the शर्-प्रत्याहार: and second letter belongs to the खय्-प्रत्याहार:) then the खय् letter is retained and all other consonants of the अभ्यास: take लोप:। Note: 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः is a अपवाद: (exception) to 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    3. In the verses can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् derived from a verbal root ending in a ॠकारः?

By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “श” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“You should think of the answer to this question.” Paraphrase this to “The answer to this question should be thought of by you.”

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
