Gita Press translation – O king, the Ṛṣis actually deputed Bhṛgu, one of Brahmā’s sons, to ascertain the out of curiosity fact with intent to know this truth, Maharṣi Bhṛgu (first) visited the court of Brahmā, and with a view to testing Brahmā’s forbearance and other qualities, did neither bow to him nor offer any praises. Brahmā got angry with him and looked as if burning with his majestic glow (2-3).

“जिज्ञास” is a सन्नन्त-धातुः derived from the verbal root √ज्ञा (क्र्यादि-गणः, ज्ञा अवबोधने, धातु-पाठः # ९. ४३).

(1) ज्ञा + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).

(2) ज्ञा + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

(3) ज्ञास् ज्ञास । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

(4) जा ज्ञास । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

(5) ज ज्ञास । By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः, the अच् (vowel) of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः) is substituted by a short vowel.

(6) जिज्ञास । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः – When the affix “सन्” follows, a अकारः belonging to a reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is replaced by a इकारः।

“जिज्ञास” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “जिज्ञासा” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास”।

(7) जिज्ञास + अ । By 3-3-102 अ प्रत्ययात्‌ – In order to form a feminine noun, the affix “अ” is used following a verbal root ending in an affix. Note: A verbal root ending in an affix refers to a verbal root which gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।
Note: The affix “अ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः

(8) जिज्ञास् + अ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

= जिज्ञास । Note: Since the affix “अ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “जिज्ञास” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च

(9) जिज्ञास + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(10) जिज्ञास + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(11) जिज्ञासा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

(12) जिज्ञासा + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(13) जिज्ञासा + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(14) जिज्ञासे + आ । By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ”आप्” ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix “आङ्” (“टा”) or “ओस्”।

(15) जिज्ञासया । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा been used in Chapter Seven of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा has been used in the form जिज्ञासुः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास”।
    चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन ।
    आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ॥ 7-16 ॥

    The सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास” is derived from √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३).

ज्ञा + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).
    = ज्ञा + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = ज्ञास् ज्ञास । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = जा ज्ञास । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = ज ज्ञास । By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
    = जिज्ञास । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
    “जिज्ञास” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “जिज्ञासु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास”।

    जिज्ञास + उ । By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः। Note: “उ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = जिज्ञास् + उ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    = जिज्ञासु ।

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “जिज्ञासु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “जिज्ञासु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

    The विवक्षा is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    जिज्ञासु + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
    = जिज्ञासु + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जिज्ञासुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Where has the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses?
Answer: The verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) has been used in the form अभ्यगात्।

    The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    गा + लुँङ् । By 3-2-110 लुङ्। By 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि – When the intention is to add the affix “लुँङ्”, there is a substitution of “गा” in the place of √इ (इण् गतौ २.
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = गा + च्लि + त् । By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
    = गा + सिँच् + त् । By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
    = गा + त् । By 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु, when followed by a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:, the प्रत्यय: “सिँच्” takes the लुक् elision if preceded by √गा (the substitute “गा” which comes in place of इण् गतौ २. ४० by 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि) or √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ) or any verbal root which has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref. 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्) or √पा (पा पाने १. १०७४) or √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १).
Note: 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते does not apply here, because it requires the affix सिँच् to be actually present. Here the affix सिँच् has taken the लुक् elision, hence 7-3-96 does not apply.
    = अट् गा + त् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
    = अगात् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अभि + अगात् = अभ्यगात् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    3. Which सूत्रम् has been used for the एकारादेशः in the form चक्रे?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच् has been used for the एकारादेशः in the form चक्रे derived from the धातुः √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०)

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    कृ + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = कृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले।
    Note: By 3-4-115 लिट् च, a तिङ्-प्रत्यय: which comes in place of लिँट् gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore “त” gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। This prevents 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप् (which requires a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: to follow) from applying.
    = कृ + एश् । By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच् – When they come in place of लिँट्, the affixes “त” and “झ” take the substitutions “एश्” and “इरेच्” respectively. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix “त” is replaced by “एश्”।
    = कृ + ए । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, the प्रत्यय: “ए” is कित् here. Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
    = कृ कृ + ए । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    = कर् कृ + ए । By 7-4-66 उरत्, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = चर् कृ + ए । By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
    = च कृ + ए । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = चक्रे । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I want to know your opinion.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “मत” for “opinion.”
    Answer: तव मतम् जिज्ञासे = तव मतं जिज्ञासे।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Who would not want to go to heaven?”
    Answer: कः स्वर्गम्/द्याम्/दिवम् न जिगमिषेत् = कः स्वर्गं न जिगमिषेत् – अथवा – को द्यां/दिवं न जिगमिषेत्।
Note: The form द्याम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) is derived from the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “द्यो” which is declined like the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”। The form दिवम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) is derived from the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “दिव्”।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“My younger brother wants to be an actor.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “अनुज” in the masculine for “younger brother.”
    Answer: मम अनुजः नटः बुभूषति = ममानुजो नटो बुभूषति।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-17 जसः शी has been used in the form ते (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “तद्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

    तद् + जस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = त अ + जस् । By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
    = त + जस् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = त + शी । By 7-1-17 जसः शी – Following a pronoun ending in short “अ” the nominative plural ending “जस्” is replaced by “शी”।
    = त + ई । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    = स्व + इन । By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः, following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affixes “टा”, “ङसिँ” and “ङस्” are replaced respectively by “इन”, “आत्” and “स्य”।
    = स्वेन । By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।
