Gita Press translation – Like fire and other elements (which, though undifferentiated, appear as differentiated through diverse media), the Lord (though one) appears endowed with various forms (in the shape of the numberless Jīva); yet He is not distinguished from the psychophysical organism (occupied by Him.) It is only the discerning that are eventually able to realize the Self dwelling in their own heart after carefully investigating it (9). When intending to create bodies (as a means of enjoyment) for the Jīva (the individual soul), the aforesaid Supreme evolves (the element of) Rajas as a distinct entity (out of the chaos hitherto prevailing) by His own Māyā (creative energy). (Nay), keen to sport in the midst of (all) these heterogeneous bodies, the omnipotent Lord evolves the Sattvaguṇa and when about to retire (from His sportful activities), He fosters the element of Tamas (10).

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “रिरंस” is derived from √रम् (भ्वादि-गणः, रमुँ क्रीडायाम् ।

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

By 7-4-79 सन्यतः – When the affix “सन्” follows, a अकारः belonging to a reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is replaced by a इकारः।

By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि – नकारः and मकारः which do not occur at the end of a पदम् get अनुस्वारः as replacement when a झल् letter follows.

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “रिरंसु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “रिरंस”।

By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः – The affix “उ” is prescribed after the following verbal roots to denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill:
i) any verbal root ending in the affix सन्
७१६) preceded by the उपसर्गः “आङ्”

By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “रिरंसु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “रिरंसु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √रम् (रमुँ क्रीडायाम् । ९८९) been used in Chapter Five of the गीता?
    Answer: The verbal root √रम् (रमुँ क्रीडायाम् । ९८९) has been used in the form रमते

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।

    2. Where else (besides in रिरंसुः) has the affix सन् been used in the verses?
Answer: The affix सन् has been used in the form सिसृक्षुः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष”।

    The सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष” is derived from √सृज् (तुदादि-गणः, सृजँ विसर्गे, धातु-पाठः # ६.

    Note: The affix “स” is a कित् here by 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “सिसृक्षु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष”।

By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “सिसृक्षु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “सिसृक्षु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।

    3. What would be an alternate form for विदन्ति?
    Answer: The alternate form for विदन्ति is विदुः – derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९).
Note: The optional form विदुः is brought about by 3-4-83 विदो लटो वा।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-83 विदो लटो वा – The affixes (“तिप्”, “तस्” etc.) of लँट् following the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९ ) optionally get the nine affixes “णल्”, “अतुस्” etc., as replacements respectively.
    Note: The nine परस्‍मैपद-प्रत्यया: [“तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”, “थ”, “मिप्”, “वस्”, “मस्”] of लँट् optionally get “णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”, “अ”, “णल्”, “व”, “म” as replacements. As per 1-3-10 यथासंख्यमनुदेशः समानाम्, the substitutions are done respectively.
    1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of उस् from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
Note: Since उस् is a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: and is अपित् (does not have पकार: as an इत्), it becomes ङिद्वत् (as if it has ङकार: as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। Due to this, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेश: for the इकार: (of the अङ्गम् “विद्”) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

    4. Can you spot an affix “णिच्” in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses?
    Answer: The affix “णिच्” has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the form ईरयति, a causative form derived from √ईर् (ईरँ गतौ कम्पने च २. ८).

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च – The affix “णिच्” is used after a root, when the operation of a causer – such as the operation of directing – is to be expressed.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

Note: The form ईरयति can also be derived from the verbal root √ईर् (ईरँ क्षेपे १०. In this case the affix “णिच्” is prescribed by 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्। Rest of the derivation is the same as above.

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् has been used in the form विन्दन्ति derived from √विद् (तुदादि-गणः, विदॢ्ँ लाभे, धातु-पाठः #६.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
By 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् – the eight verbal roots √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) #६. १७३) get the “नुँम्”-आगमः when श-प्रत्ययः follows. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः the “नुँम्”-आगमः attaches itself after the last vowel (इकार:) of “विद्”।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“These boys want to sport in the water.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ has been used in the form आत्मानम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “आत्मन्”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। “अम्” gets the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ, the penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in a नकार: gets elongated if it is followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.

    2. The सुबन्त-पदम् “पूर्षु” seen in the commentary is derived from which प्रातिपदिकम्?
    Answer: पूर्षु is सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पुर्”

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् “पुर्” is derived from the verbal root √पॄ (पॄ पालनपूरणयोः ३. ४). As part of the derivation, the ending ॠकार: of “पॄ” takes the गुणादेश: by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः। Thus the ending रेफ: of the प्रातिपदिकम् “पुर्” belongs to a धातु:।
The अङ्गम् “पुर्” gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने।
By 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः – The penultimate इक् letter (“इ”, “उ”, “ऋ”, “ऌ”) of a पदम् is elongated when the पदम् ends in a रेफ: or a वकार: of a धातु:। Note: 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः does not apply here because of the नियम-सूत्रम् 8-3-16 रोः सुपि – When सुप्-प्रत्यय: (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) follows, only “रुँ” gets विसर्गः as a replacement, not any other रेफ:।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
