Gita Press translation – Sitting in his own abode (the lotus from which he has emanated), that primal deity, the supreme preceptor of all the three worlds, began to meditate with intent to proceed with the work of creation. But he failed to obtain the vision which is regarded as valuable for this purpose, and with the help of which the creation of the phenomenal world could be taken in hand (5). While he was yet absorbed in thought, Brahmā (the deity presiding over the entire creation) once heard near him in the causal waters a word of two syllables, viz., the sixteenth and the twenty-first letter-sounds among the twenty-five hard consonants (त and प = तप,) i.e., practice penance uttered twice (6).

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष” is derived from √सृज् (तुदादि-गणः, सृजँ विसर्गे, धातु-पाठः # ६. १५०).

सृज् + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).

= सृज् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

Note: The affix “स” is a कित् here by 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च – The affix सन् is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it begins with a झल् letter and follows a consonant adjoining a इक् letter.
Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.

= सृज्स् सृज्स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

= सर् ज्स् सृज्स । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌ – A ऋवर्ण: of the अभ्यास: (reduplicate) takes the अकारादेश: when a प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः , in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

= स सृज्स । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

= सि सृज्स । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः – When the affix “सन्” follows, a अकारः belonging to a reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is replaced by a इकारः।

= सि सृष्स । By 8-2-36 व्रश्च-भ्रस्ज-सृज-मृज-यज-राज-भ्राजच्छशां षः, the seven verbal roots listed (“व्रश्च्”, “भ्रस्ज्”, “सृज्”, “मृज्”, “यज्”, “राज्”, “भ्राज्”) and terms ending in a छकारः or शकारः get षकारः as a replacement, when they are at the end of a पदम् or are followed by a झल् letter.

= सि सृक्स । By 8-2-41 षढोः कः सि, a षकारः or a ढकारः is replaced by a ककार: if followed by a सकारः।

= सिसृक्ष । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

“सिसृक्ष” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “सिसृक्षा” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “सिसृक्ष”।

सिसृक्ष + अ । By 3-3-102 अ प्रत्ययात्‌ – In order to form a feminine noun, the affix “अ” is used following a verbal root ending in an affix. Note: A verbal root ending in an affix refers to a verbal root which gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।
Note: The affix “अ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः

= सिसृक्ष् + अ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

= सिसृक्ष । Note: Since the affix “अ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “सिसृक्ष” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च

= सिसृक्ष + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

= सिसृक्ष + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

= सिसृक्षा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

(1) सिसृक्षा + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(2) सिसृक्षा + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) सिसृक्षे + आ । By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ”आप्” ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix “आङ्” (“टा”) or “ओस्”।

(4) सिसृक्षया । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च been used in Chapter 4 of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च has been used in the form मुमुक्षुभिः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “मुमुक्ष” in the following verse:
    एवं ज्ञात्वा कृतं कर्म पूर्वैरपि मुमुक्षुभिः
    कुरु कर्मैव तस्मात्त्वं पूर्वैः पूर्वतरं कृतम्‌ ॥ 4-15 ॥

    The सन्नन्त-धातुः “मुमुक्ष” is derived from √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) ६. १६६).

    मुच् + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा।
    = मुच् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    Note: As per 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च, the affix सन् is considered to be a कित् here. Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
    = मुच्स् मुच्स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = मु मुच्स । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = मु मुक्स । By 8-2-30 चोः कुः।
    = मुमुक्ष । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
    “मुमुक्ष” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “मुमुक्षु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “मुमुक्ष”।

    मुमुक्ष + उ । By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः। Note: “उ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = मुमुक्ष् + उ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    = मुमुक्षु ।

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “मुमुक्षु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “मुमुक्षु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

    The विवक्षा is पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्।
    मुमुक्षु + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “भिस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = मुमुक्षुभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च the कौमुदी says इकः किम्? यियक्षते। Please explain.
Answer: The form यियक्षते is derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “यियक्ष”।

    The सन्नन्त-धातुः “यियक्ष” is derived from the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७).
    यज् + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा।
    = यज् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
Note: As per 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च – The affix सन् is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it begins with a झल् letter and follows a consonant adjoining a इक् letter. In this example, the affix सन् begins with a झल् letter but follows a consonant adjoining अकारः (which is not a इक् letter.) Hence सन् is not a कित् in this example. If the सन् affix were to be a कित्, then by 6-1-15 वचिस्वपियजादीनां किति the यकारः of the verbal root √यज् would get सम्प्रसारणम् giving rise to an undesired form. Therefore, पाणिनिः has specified इक् in the सूत्रम् 1-2-10, to prevent the undesired application of 1-2-10 in forms such as “यियक्ष”
    = यज्स् यज्स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = य यज्स । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = यि यज्स । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
    = यि यष्स । By 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः।
    = यि यक्स । By 8-2-41 षढोः कः सि।
    = यियक्ष । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
    “यियक्ष” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    यियक्ष + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = यियक्ष + अ + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = यियक्षते । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    3. Can you recall a सूत्रम् (in Chapter Six of the अष्टाध्यायी) wherein पाणिनिः specifically mentions the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०)?
    Answer: पाणिनिः specifically mentions the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०) in the सूत्रम् 6-1-58 सृजिदृशोर्झल्यमकिति – When followed by a अकित् (does not have ककार: as a इत्) affix which begins with a झल् letter, the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ४. ७५, ६. १५०) as well as √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) gets the augment अम्।

    4. Why didn’t this सूत्रम् (answer to question 3) apply in this example (which condition was not satisfied)?
Answer: In order for the सूत्रम् 6-1-58 सृजिदृशोर्झल्यमकिति to apply, the affix following the verbal root should not be a कित्। In the example सिसृक्षया, the verbal root √सृज् is followed by सन् which is a कित् (by 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च)। Therefore 6-1-58 does not apply here.

    5. Can you spot an augment “आट्” in the verses?
Answer: An augment “आट्” can be seen in the form ऐक्षत derived from √ईक्ष् (ईक्षँ दर्शने १. ६९४).

    The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    ईक्ष् + लँङ् । By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = ईक्ष् + अ + त । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = आट् ईक्षत । By 6-4-72 आडजादीनाम् – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् which begins with an अच् (vowel) gets आट् as an augment. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “आट्”-आगम: joins at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।
    = आ ईक्षत । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऐक्षत । By 6-1-90 आटश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśwāmitra wanted to create a second heaven.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “द्वितीय” for “second.”
    Answer: विश्वामित्रः मुनिः द्वितीयम् स्वर्गम् सिसृक्षामास = विश्वामित्रो मुनिर्द्वितीयं स्वर्गं सिसृक्षामास।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि नित्यम् been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि नित्यम् has been used to stop the सन्धि-कार्यम् (6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति) between ते and अक्षरे।
The एकारः at the end of ते (द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्) gets the प्रगृह्य-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-11 ईदूदेद् द्विवचनं प्रगृह्यम्। Now as per 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि नित्यम् – Terms which are designated as “प्रगृह्य” retain their natural state when followed by a vowel. (This means that no सन्धिः operations are performed.)

    2. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This (is) not an error.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “दोष” for “error.”
    Answer: न अयम्/एषः दोषः = नायं/नैष दोषः।
