जगदिषे is derived from the धातुः √गद् (भ्वादि-गणः, गदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि धातु-पाठः # १.५४).

The ending अकारः of “गदँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Since this is a कर्मणि प्रयोग:, the verbal root √गद् takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् , the affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “थास्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-80 थासस्से – The affix “थास्” which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets “से” as the replacement.

By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य , when लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, in a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), a letter of the कवर्गः or हकारः is replaced by a letter of the चवर्गः । The substitutions take place as per 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः, of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

A लिँट् affix does not take the augment इट् only when following one of the eight verbal roots – √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. A लिँट् affix does take the augment इट् when following any other verbal root even if that verbal root is अनिट्। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगम: “इट्” joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “से”।

Note: The सूत्रम् 7-2-13 कृसृभृवृस्तुद्रुस्रुश्रुवो लिटि has not been discussed in the class.

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

Questions:

“‘I don’t want to fight.’ – thus Śrī Kṛṣṇa was spoken to by Arjuna.” Use the verbal root √युध् (युधँ सम्प्रहारे ४. ६९) for “to fight” and the verbal root √गद् (गदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १.५४) for “to speak.”

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Rāvaṇa was killed by Śrī Rāma.” Use a passive लिँट् form of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) for “was killed.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I don’t want to argue.” ११६४) with the उपसर्गः “वि” for “to argue.”

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-80 थासस्से (used in step 4) been used for the last time in the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-80 थासस्से (used in step 4) has been used for the last time in the form मन्यसे derived from √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-80 थासस्से – The affix “थास्” which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets “से” as the replacement. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire term “थास्” is replaced.
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्।

    2. Can you spot an affix श्नम् in the verse?
Answer: An affix श्नम् has been used in the form निरुन्ध्या: derived from √रुध् (रुधिँर् आवरणे ७. १).

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-78 रुधादिभ्यः श्नम्, the श्नम्-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the रुधादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः that is used signifying the agent. श्नम् is a मित्। Hence as per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, it is placed after the last vowel (उकार:) of the अङ्गम् “रुध्”।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः। Note: The प्रत्यय: “यास्” is a ङित् due to यासुट् being a ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-83 हलः श्नः शानज्झौ been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-83 हलः श्नः शानज्झौ has been used in the form निगृहाण derived √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
By 3-1-83 हलः श्नः शानज्झौ, after a verbal root ending in a consonant, the affix “श्ना” is replaced by “शानच्”, when the हि-प्रत्ययः follows.
Note: As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term “श्ना” gets replaced.
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “शानच्” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-1-16 to apply.
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 6-4-105 अतो हेः।

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

    Answer:

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “अदस्” been used in the verse?
Answer: The सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “अदस्” has been used in the form अमुम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……….। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनाम:, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।
By 8-2-80 अदसोऽसेर्दादु दो मः – There is a substitution of उकार:/ऊकार: in place of the letter (vowel) following the दकार: of “अदस्” and the दकार: gets substituted by मकार:। This rule does not apply when there is a सकार: at the end of “अदस्”।

    2. In the verse can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the ऋकारः?
    Answer: A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in ऋकारः is “धातृ” – used in the form धात्रा।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
