Today we will look at the form मा संशयिष्ठाः 2As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवम् 6.11.19.

Gita Press translation – If, on the other hand, O valiant Indra, you actually succeed in crushing my army and severing my (own) head with your thunderbolt in this encounter, I shall in that case offer my body as a (propitiatory) oblation to birds and beasts (such as vultures and jackals) and (thus) freed from all debts (of Karma), attain to the dust of feet (destiny or abode) of enlightened souls (Nārada and others) (18). O ruler of gods, wherefore do you not hurl your unfailing thunderbolt at me, your enemy, stationed before you? (Pray) do not entertain any misgiving (in your mind.) (Rest assured that) the thunderbolt will not prove ineffectual as your mace or as an entreaty seeking its fulfillment from a miser (19).

मा संशयिष्ठाः is derived from the धातुः √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः २. २६)

The धातुः √शी is a ङित् (has ङकारः as a इत् letter)। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √शी takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √शी can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-3-175 माङि लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् must be used after a verbal root when used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्”।
Note: This rule debars the use of any other लकार: after a verbal root when used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्”।

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “थास्” as the substitute for the लकारः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents ending सकारः of “थास्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः – an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “इट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) shall not take the augment अट् or आट्।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः

“सम्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः

Questions:

  1. 1. Where in the गीता has the affix “थास्” been used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्”?
Answer: The affix “थास्” has been used in connection with the अव्ययम् “माङ्” in verse 34 of Chapter 11 in the form मा व्यथिष्ठाः derived from √व्यथ् (व्यथँ भयसञ्चलनयोः १.

1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “थास्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) does not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    2. In the धातु-पाठः, among the mono-syllabic verbal roots ending in a ईकारः only three are not अनुदात्तोपदेशा:। One of them is √शी (शीङ् स्वप्ने २. २६) used in the present example. Which are the other two?
    Answer: The other two monosyllabic verbal roots ending in a ईकार: in the धातु-पाठ: that do not a have a अनुदात्त-स्वर: on their ईकार: are √डी (डीङ् विहायसा गतौ १.

    3. Where has लुँट् been used in the verses? Where has लृँट् been used?
    Answer: लुँट् has been used in the form हर्ता derived from √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) and लृँट् has been used in the form प्रपत्स्ये derived from √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४.

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the इडागम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।
By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।
Note: The verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) can also take आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले। In that case the प्रत्ययः in this example would be “त” (instead of “तिप्”), but we would get the same form हर्ता because 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः applies equally whether “तिप्” is used or “त” is used.

By 3-3-13 लृट् शेषे च – With or without the presence of a क्रियार्था क्रिया (an action meant or intended for another action), the affix लृँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future.
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the इडागम: (for “स्य”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By By 8-4-55 खरि च।

    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “इट्”-आगमः in the form हरिष्यति?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-70 ऋद्धनोः स्ये is used for the “इट्”-आगमः in the form हरिष्यति derived from √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १.

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “स्य”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-2-70 ऋद्धनोः स्ये, the affix “स्य” (prescribed by 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः) gets the augment इट् when following a verbal root that ends in a ऋकार: or the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २). As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगम: “इट्” joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “स्य”।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the form मा कार्षीः derived from √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८.

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “स्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु – (The ending letter of) a base (अङ्गम्) which ends in a इक् letter takes the वृद्धि: substitute when followed by the affix सिँच् which is in turn followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) shall not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Don’t sleep during the day.” Use the अव्ययम् “दिवा” for “during the day.”
    Answer:

    Easy Questions:

    1. Why has the सूत्रम् 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः not applied between भो इन्द्र?
    Answer: The पदच्छेद: of भो इन्द्र is भो:, इन्द्र।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुँ।
By 8-3-17 भोभगोअघोअपूर्वस्य योऽशि।
By 8-3-20 ओतो गार्ग्यस्य। (We have not studied this सूत्रम् in the class.) The वृत्ति: for this सूत्रम् says – ओकारात्परस्य पदान्तस्यालघुप्रयत्नस्य यकारस्य नित्यं लोप: स्यात् – Following a ओकार:, a यकार: which is at the end of a पदम् and is not of subdued articulation (ref. 8-3-18 व्योर्लघुप्रयत्नतरः शाकटायनस्य) is always elided.
Note: After this 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः been used in the verses?
    Answer: Answer: 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः has been used in the verse in the form (हे) हरे (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “हरि”,  सम्बुद्धि:।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। Here “सुँ” has सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
By 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः, when the सम्बुद्धि: affix follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of) of an अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel.
