Today we will look at the form अवोचत 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.18.38.

Gita Press transaltion – Yayāti submitted : “I am unsated till today with sensuous enjoyments in the company of your daughter, O holy Brāhmaṇa!” (Śukrācārya replied) “Old age may be exchanged (by you) at will with the youth of any other who may voluntarily accept it.” (37) Having obtained a solution (of his problem) in this form, Yayāti (returned to his capital and) said to his eldest son, “Yadu dear, take this old age (of mine) and part with your own youth.” (38)

अवोचत is derived from the धातुः √ब्रू (अदादि-गणः, ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि, धातु-पाठः #२. See question 2.

The धातुः “ब्रूञ्” is a ञित् (has ञकारः as इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्) and therefore it is उभयपदी। The ञकारः takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। By 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, this verbal root may take आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः and by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, it may take परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः। Here it has taken a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः।

As per 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः, “ब्रू” takes the substitution “वच्” when the intention is to add a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:। By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-52 अस्यतिवक्तिख्यातिभ्योऽङ् – In the active voice, the affix “च्लि” takes the substitute “अङ्” when following the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. ५८, as well as the substitute “वच्” which comes in place √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९) ref: 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः) or √ख्या (the substitute “ख्याञ्” which comes in place √चक्ष् (चक्षिँङ् व्यक्तायां वाचि | अयं दर्शनेऽपि २.

By 7-4-20 वच उम् – A अङ्गम् consisting of the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८, as well as the substitute “वच्” which comes in place √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९)) takes the augment “उम्” when followed by the affix “अङ्”। As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the augment “उम्” joins after the last vowel (अकार:) of the अङ्गम् “वच्”।

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

  1. 1. In Chapter 18 of the गीता can you spot a word in which the affix “च्लि” has taken the substitution “अङ्”?
    Answer: In verse 66 of Chapter 18, the affix “च्लि” has taken the substitution “अङ्” in the form मा शुचः derived from √शुच् (ईँशुचिँर् पूतीभावे ४.

    The “इर्” in “ईँशुचिँर्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the वार्तिकम् – इर इत्सञ्ज्ञा वाच्या and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Therefore this धातुः is an इरित्।

By 3-3-175 माङि लुङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-57 इरितो वा – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix “च्लि” optionally takes the substitute “अङ्” when following a verbal root which is इरित् (which has “इर्” as a इत्।)
Note: Since “अङ्” is a ङित्-प्रत्ययः, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) shall not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    2. Could the form अवोचत be derived from √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २.
    Answer: No, अवोचत cannot be derived from √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. In the धातु-पाठः, “वचँ परिभाषणे” has one इत् letter (by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्) which is the अकार: following the चकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √वच् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √वच् takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.
In the form अवोचत, the verbal root has taken a आत्मनेपदम् affix. If the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८) were to be used the form would be अवोचत्। Therefore अवोचत can only be derived from the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९).

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेशः in the form देहि?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-119 घ्वसोरेद्धावभ्यासलोपश्च is used for the एकारादेशः in the form देहि derived from √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०).

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः।
By 6-1-10 श्लौ।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-119 घ्वसोरेद्धावभ्यासलोपश्च, when the “हि”-प्रत्यय: follows, there is a substitution of एकार: in place of a धातु: that has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा and also in place of √अस् (असँ भुवि #२. Simultaneously there is a लोप: of the अभ्यास: (if any). १०) has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्। Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending आकार: of “दा” is replaced by a एकारः।

    4. Can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses where the यक्-प्रत्ययः may have been used?
Answer: The यक्-प्रत्ययः may have been used in the form व्यत्यस्यताम् derived from √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४.

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-4-90 आमेतः, the letter ‘ए’ of लोँट् is replaced by आम्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘ताम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।

    “वि” and “अति” are the उपसर्गौ (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

Note: As indicated by श्रीधर-स्वामी in the commentary, there are two more possibilities in interpreting the term व्यत्यस्यताम्।
    i) व्यत्यस्यताम् may also have been used in the active sense. Recall that even though √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) is परस्मैपदी, as per the वार्तिकम् (under 1-3-30) “उपसर्गादस्यत्यूह्योर्वा वचनम्” a आत्मनेपदम् affix can optionally be used with √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) when preceded by a उपसर्गः। This वार्तिकम् justifies the use of a आत्मनेपदम् affix in the active form “व्यत्यस्यताम्।”
    ii) Another interpretation is to do पदच्छेदः as व्यत्यस्य + ताम्।

    5. Where is the गणसूत्रम् जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च been used in the commentary?
Answer: The गणसूत्रम् जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च has been used in the form गमय derived from √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 6-4-92 मितां ह्रस्वः, a short vowel (ह्रस्व:) is substituted in place of the penultimate letter (vowel) of a verbal root which is मित् (has मकार: as an इत्) and is followed by the causative affix “णि”। Note: √गम् is a मित् as per the गणसूत्रम् – जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च – The verbal roots √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ११५४) as well as any verbal root ending in “अम्” shall be considered to be “मित्” (having मकार: an an इत्)।

By 3-3-162 लोट् च ।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 6-4-105 अतो हेः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “What did the teacher say?”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-109 दश्च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-109 दश्च is used for the मकारादेश: in the form इमाम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, स्त्रीलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, “इदम्” gets the अकारादेशः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending मकार: gets replaced. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of अम् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
Since we are deriving a feminine form, we have to add the प्रत्ययः “टाप्” to “इद” using 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्।
By 7-2-109 दश्च, the दकारः of इदम् gets मकारः as a replacement when a विभक्तिः affix follows. “अम्” has the विभक्ति-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च।
By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् has been used for the गुणादेशः in the form दुहितरि?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः has been used for the गुणादेशः in the form दुहितरि (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “दुहितृ”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् “दुहितृ” used in the word दुहितरि does not take the feminine affix “ङीप्” (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 4-1-5 ऋन्नेभ्यो ङीप्) because of the prohibition rule निषेध-सूत्रम् 4-1-10 न षट्स्वस्रादिभ्यः – The feminine affixes do not come after words that have the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा and “स्वसृ” etc. )

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = दुहितर् + इ | By 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः – The ending ऋकार: of a अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix “ङि” (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्। By 1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः – In the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” letter.
