Today we will look at the form व्यवोचत् 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.17.29.

Gita Press translation – Thus wantonly mocked by an enemy whose vanity knew no bounds, the worshipful lord of waters waxed angry: but he managed to curb the anger that had sprung in him by dint of his reason and replied, “O dear one, we have (now) desisted from warfare (have grown too old for a combat) (29). I do not see anyone else than the most ancient Person (Lord Viṣṇu), who will give satisfaction in battle to you, who are so skilled in the ways of war. Therefore, O chief of the Asuras, approach Him, whom even heroes like you mention with praise (30).

अवोचत् is derived from the धातुः √वच् (अदादि-गणः, वचँ परिभाषणे, धातु-पाठः #२.
३९) can also be used to derive the form अवोचत्। As per 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः, “ब्रू” takes the substitution “वच्” when the intention is to add a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:।

In the धातु-पाठः, “वचँ” has one इत् letter (by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्) which is the अकार: following the चकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √वच् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √वच् takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-52 अस्यतिवक्तिख्यातिभ्योऽङ् – In the active voice, the affix “च्लि” takes the substitute “अङ्” when following the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. ५८, as well as the substitute “वच्” which comes in place √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९) ref: 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः) or √ख्या (the substitute “ख्याञ्” which comes in place √चक्ष् (चक्षिँङ् व्यक्तायां वाचि | अयं दर्शनेऽपि २. ७) ref: 2-4-54).

By 7-4-20 वच उम् – A अङ्गम् consisting of the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८, as well as the substitute “वच्” which comes in place √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९)) takes the augment “उम्” when followed by the affix “अङ्”। As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the augment “उम्” joins after the last vowel (अकार:) of the अङ्गम् “वच्”।

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

“वि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-100 इतश्च (used in step 5) been used for first time in the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-100 इतश्च has been used for first time in verse 2 of Chapter 1 in the form अब्रवीत् derived from √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च – The ending letter (इकारः) of a इकारान्तः (ending in a इकारः) परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः, is elided.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-52 अस्यतिवक्तिख्यातिभ्योऽङ्  (used in step 7), the काशिका says “अस्यतेः पुषादिपाठादेवाङि सिद्धे पुनर्ग्रहणमात्मनेपदार्थम्। ” Please explain.
Answer: The verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) is contained in the “पुषादि” section mentioned in 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु। Then what is the need to mention it again specifically in the सूत्रम् 3-1-52 अस्यतिवक्तिख्यातिभ्योऽङ्? The reason is that 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु only applies when a परस्मैपदम् affix follows. So 3-1-52 is required to cover those cases where a आत्मनेपदम् affix follows. This is what the काशिका means by “पुनर्ग्रहणमात्मनेपदार्थम्।”
    Note: The ending उकारः (which is a इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्) of √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Hence normally, in कर्तरि प्रयोगः, only a परस्मैपदम् affix can be used with √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. But by the वार्तिकम् (under 1-3-30) “उपसर्गादस्यत्यूह्योर्वा वचनम्” a आत्मनेपदम् affix can optionally be used with √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) when preceded by a उपसर्गः।

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the ह्रस्वादेशः (ऋकारः) in the form गृणते?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः is used for the ह्रस्वादेशः (ऋकारः) in the form गृणते (which is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः) derived from √गॄ (गॄ शब्दे ९. Note: In the धातु-पाठः, the verbal root √गॄ (गॄ शब्दे ९. ३३) is devoid of indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। But in this form a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः has been used irregularly. The grammatically correct form would be गृणन्ति।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। Note: 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् should have applied here, instead a आत्मनेपदम् affix has been used irregularly.
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
By 7-3-80 प्वादीनां ह्रस्वः, a short vowel is substituted (in place of the long vowel) of the twenty-four verbal roots √पूञ् (पूञ् पवने ९. १४) etc., when a शित्-प्रत्ययः follows.
By 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः।
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “अते” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply.

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ  been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ has been used in the form स्तुवन्ति derived from √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ३८).

The धातुः ‘ष्टुञ्’ has an initial षकारः in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः , there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः। And by the परिभाषा ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the टकार-आदेशः for the तकारः, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the षकारः, reverts to the तकारः since the cause for the टकारादेश: no longer exists.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘झि’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियँङुवँङौ, if a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the प्रत्यय: ‘श्नु’ or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: (‘इ’ or ‘ई’) or उवर्ण: (‘उ’ or ‘ऊ’) of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word ‘भ्रू’।
Note: As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च only the ending letter of the अङ्गम् ‘स्तु’ is replaced by ‘उवँङ्’।

    5. In which तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses has the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) been used?
Answer: The verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) has been used in the form इहि

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: As per 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च, the सार्वधातुकम् affix “हि” is अपित्। Hence by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix “हि” is ङिद्वत् (behaves as if it has ङकारः as a इत्।) Therefore 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
The teacher said to me “You know the answer to (of) this question.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ  been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियँङुवँङौ is used for the “इयँङ्”-आदेश: in the form धिया (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “धी”, तृतीया-एकवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा..।
By 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ – If a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the प्रत्यय: “श्नु” or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: or उवर्ण: of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word “भ्रू”। As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ईकार: is replaced by “इयँङ्”।
Note: 6-4-77 applies here because the ending ईकार: of “धी” belongs to a धातु:।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the substitution “आत्” (in place of “ङसिँ”) in the form पुरुषात् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पुरुष”, पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्)?

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affixes “टा”, “ङसिँ” and “ङस्” are replaced respectively by “इन”, “आत्” and “स्य”।
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने।
