Today we will look at the form अहनत् 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.77.3.

। ३ ।। । ४ ।।

Gita Press translation “With four he struck his four horses, with one the charioteer, and with one shaft each he tore off Dyumān’s bow and banner and with the remaining one he struck down Dyumān’s head. (3) Gada, Sātyaki, Sāmba and others began to mow down the army of Śālva. The inmates of the aerial car, Saubha, with their necks severed from their bodies, dropped one by one into the sea.”

अहनत् is derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २)

The ending अकारः (which is an इत्) of “हनँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus √हन् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √हन् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्, the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। See question 2.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

Questions:

1. In the last verse of which chapter of the गीता has √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?

2. The form अहनत् is grammatically irregular (आर्षप्रयोग:)। Which सूत्रम् should have applied after step 6 and what would be the resulting grammatically correct form?

२) been used in the verses in a तिङन्तं पदम्?

4. Where has 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Kill your internal enemies.” Use the adjective (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्त:स्थ” for “internal.”

Advanced question:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः, the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – तनादित्वादेव सिद्धे कृञ्ग्रहणं गणकार्यस्यानित्यत्वे लिङ्गम्। Please explain what this means and how it may be used to justify the form अहनत्।

Easy questions:

1. The forms चतुर्भि: (तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) and चतुर: (द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) are derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “चतुर्”। Can you recall two सूत्रे (which we have studied) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “चतुर्”?

2. Where has 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति been used in the verses?

  1. 1. In the last verse of which chapter of the गीता has √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?
Answer: In the last verse of Chapter 3 √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) has been used in the form जहि।

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 6-4-36 हन्तेर्जः, when followed by the हि-प्रत्ययः “हन्” gets “ज” as the replacement. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term “हन्” is replaced by “ज”। Now by 6-4-105 अतो हेः, the हि-प्रत्ययः should have taken elision. But since both 6-4-36 and 6-4-105 belong to the अधिकारः of 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्, the “ज”-आदेश: that was done by 6-4-36 is not seen by 6-4-105. Only “हन्” is seen by 6-4-105 and therefore there is no elision of the हि-प्रत्ययः here and the form remains as जहि।
Note: Both 6-4-36 and 6-4-105 prescribe an operation that involves the हि-प्रत्यय:। Since they are both based on a common element, 6-4-22 comes into effect.

    2. The form अहनत् is grammatically irregular (आर्षप्रयोग:)। Which सूत्रम् should have applied after step 6 and what would be the resulting grammatically correct form?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः should have applied after step 6 to give the grammatically correct form अहन्

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शप: – The शप्-प्रत्ययः takes the लुक् elision when following a verbal root belonging to अदादि-गणः।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

२) been used in the verses in a तिङन्तं पदम्?
Answer: In the verses √हन् has been used in the form जघ्नुः also.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence, “उस्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-98 to apply.
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु।

    4. Where has 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?
Answer: 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि has been used in the verse in the form पेतुः derived from √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि – The अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

Answer: तनादित्वादेव सिद्धे means that – The mention of तनादि-गणः (in the सूत्रम् 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः) should be enough for “कृञ्” (which belongs to तनादि-गणः) to take the गण-विकरणः “उ”। But then why has पाणिनिः specifically mentioned the धातुः “कृञ्” in 3-1-79? This कृञ्ग्रहणम् is an indication (लिङ्गम्) that गणकार्यम् is अनित्यम्। We can expect some cases where a धातुः does not take the गण-विकरणः that is mandated by its गणः।
Now consider the present example – अहनत्। The लुक् elision (of the affix शप्) by 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः should have applied giving the form अहन्। But the form in the verse is अहनत्। The शप्-लुक् mandated by the अदादि-गणः has not been honored. As explained above, the separate mention of “कृञ्” in 3-1-79 can be used to justify forms such as अहनत्।

Answer: In the following सूत्राणि (that we have studied) पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “चतुर्” –
    i) 7-1-98 चतुरनडुहोरामुदात्तः। When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, “चतुर्” and “अनडुह्” get the “आम्” augment. (This “आम्” augment has a उदात्तः accent.)
When a विभक्तिः affix follows, “त्रि” and “चतुर्” get the replacements “तिसृ” and “चतसृ” respectively, in the feminine gender.
The “आम्” affix gets “नुँट्” as an augment when following “चतुर्” or a term with the designation “षट्”।

    2. Where has 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति been used in the verses?
    Answer: 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति has been used in the form सौभपतेः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “सौभपति”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। “सौभपति” has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि, 1-4-8 पतिः समास एव। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति, when a ङित् सुँप् affix follows, then an अङ्गम् having the घि-सञ्ज्ञा takes the गुण: substitution. Note: As per 1-1-52, the गुण: substitution takes place for the ending letter (in this case इकारः) of the अङ्गम्।
By 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च।
