Please Note: By popular demand, going forward the posts will be published only on weekdays.

Today we will look at the form भूयासम् 1As-आशीर्लिँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.51.53.

Note: Instead of भूयासम्, some texts have भूयेयम् (which is a आर्ष-प्रयोग:)।

Translation “Devoted heart and soul to austerities with all enjoyments ceased, and making gifts in the hope of (securing) such enjoyments (hereafter), he performs (virtuous) actions (in his present life) longing ‘may I be born again as Indra (or as a universal monarch even in the life to come).’ He (however) whose thirst (for enjoyment) is (thus) fully developed is never able to enjoy (any) happiness (whatsoever).(53) When the end of (the cycle of) birth and death in the case of a soul undergoing transmigration is in sight, then (alone) his meeting with some saints takes place, O immortal Lord! (And) when there is fellowship with a saint, then alone is engendered (a feeling of) devotion to You, the Refuge of saints and the Ruler of the high and the low.”

भूयासम् is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १).

In the धातु-पाठः, √भू has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। (Neither 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् nor 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले applies.) Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √भू takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √भू can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

The विवक्षा is आशीर्लिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्

(1) भू + लिँङ् (आशिषि) । 3-3-173 आशिषि लिङ्लोटौ, the affixes लिँङ् and लोँट् occur after a verbal root when used in the sense of benediction.

(2) भू + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) भू + मिप् । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

(4) भू + अम् । By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः, the तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः “तस्”, “थस्”, “थ” and “मिप्” of a लकारः which is a ङित्, are replaced by “ताम्”, “तम्”, “त” and “अम्” respectively. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(5) भू + यासुट् अम् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places यासुट् at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

(6) भूयासम् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: As per 3-4-116 लिङाशिषि, the affix “यास्त्” has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा here. Hence 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ and 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य do not apply.

By 3-4-104 किदाशिषि, the augment यासुट् (prescribed by 3-4-103) shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्) when it joins a लिँङ् affix used in the sense of benediction. Hence the प्रत्यय: “यासम्” (which contains the augment यासुट्) is a कित् here. This enables 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

Questions:

1. लिँङ् (आशिषि) has been used in only one word in the गीता। Which one is it?

2. Can you spot a “उ”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?

3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the अकारलोप: in the form स्यात् used in the commentary?

4. Where has 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे been used in the commentary?

5. The word जायते used in the verses is derived from which धातु:?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“May (I wish) I become proficient in grammar.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “कुशल” for “proficient.”

Easy questions:

1. What would be an alternate form for the word अष्टभि: used in the commentary?

2. Can you spot a “शि”-आदेश: in the verses?

  1. 1. लिँङ् (आशिषि) has been used in only one word in the गीता। Which one is it?
    Answer:लिँङ् (आशिषि) has been used in Chapter Two of the गीता in the form अपनुद्यात् derived from the verbal root √नुद् (णुदँ प्रेरणे ६. २, ६. १६२).
    न हि प्रपश्यामि ममापनुद्याद्‌ यच्छोकमुच्छोषणमिन्द्रियाणाम्‌ |
    अवाप्य भूमावसपत्नमृद्धं राज्यं सुराणामपि चाधिपत्यम्‌ || 2-8 ||

    The विवक्षा is आशीर्लिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    The ending अकार: of “णुदँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The beginning णकार: gets the नकारादेश: by 6-1-65 णो नः।
    नुद् + लिँङ् (आशिषि) । By 3-3-173 आशिषि लिङ्लोटौ।
    = नुद् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = नुद् + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = नुद् + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = नुद् + त् । By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = नुद् + यासुट् त् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
By 3-4-104 किदाशिषि, the augment यासुट् (prescribed by 3-4-103) shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्) when it joins a लिँङ् affix used in the sense of benediction. Hence 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेश: for the penultimate उकार: of “नुद्” which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = नुद् + यास् त् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Now “नुद् यास् त्” has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्।
    = नुद्यात् । By 8-2-29 स्कोः संयोगाद्योरन्ते च।

    “अप” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे।)
    अप + नुद्यात् = अपनुद्यात्।

    2. Can you spot a “उ”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?
    Answer: A “उ”-प्रत्यय: is used in the form करोति  derived from the धातुः √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे, तनादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #८. १०)।
    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

    कृ + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = कृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = कृ + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + + ति । By 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः signifying the agent follows, the affix “उ” is placed after the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) and also after a verbal root belonging to the तनादि-गणः। “उ” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्द्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = कर् + ओ + ति । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = करोति ।

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the अकारलोप: in the form स्यात् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः is used for the अकारलोप: in the form स्यात् derived from the धातुः √अस् (असँ भुवि, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ६०)।
    The विवक्षा is विधिलिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    अस् + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्|
    = अस् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अस् + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = अस् + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अस् + त् । By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
    = अस् + यासुट् त् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ ।
    = अस् + यास् त् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अस् + शप् + यास् त् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = अस् + यास् त् । By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
    = अस् + या त् । By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
    = स्यात् । By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The अकारः of “श्न” and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by सार्वाधातुक-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
    Note: The प्रत्यय: “यात्” is a ङित् due to यासुट् being a ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    4. Where has 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे been used in the commentary in the form मुच्यते derived from the धातु: √मुच् (तुदादि-गणः, मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने), धातु-पाठः # ६. १६६)
    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    मुच् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = मुच् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मुच् + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
    = मुच् + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.
    = मुच् + यक् + ते । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    Note: Since the affix यक् is a कित्, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेश: for the penultimate उकार: of the अङ्गम् “मुच्” which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = मुच्यते । By 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    5. The word जायते used in the verses is derived from which धातु:?
    Answer: जायते is derived from the धातुः √जन् (दिवादि-गणः, जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे, धातु-पाठः # ४. ४४)।

    The ending ईकार: (which is a इत्) of “जनीँ” has a अनुदात्त-स्वर: and hence this धातु: takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया: by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्।
    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    जन् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = जन् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जन् + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = जन् + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे।
    = जन् + श्यन् + ते । By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्।
    = जन् + य + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जायते । By 7-3-79 ज्ञाजनोर्जा – The verbal roots √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३) and √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) are substituted by “जा” when followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित् सर्वस्य, the entire term “जन्” is replaced.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“May (I wish) I become proficient in grammar.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “कुशल” for “proficient.”
    Answer: व्याकरणे कुशलः/कुशला भूयासम् = व्याकरणे कुशलो/कुशला भूयासम्।

    Easy questions:

    1. What would be an alternate form for the word अष्टभि: used in the commentary?
Answer: The alternate form would be अष्टाभिः

    अष्टन् + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “भिस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = अष्ट आ + भिस् । By 7-2-84 अष्टन आ विभक्तौ – When followed by a विभक्तिः affix that begins with a हल् letter, अष्टन् optionally gets आकारः as अन्तादेशः। This rule is also applied when “जस्” and “शस्” follow, on the basis of the ज्ञापकम् (indication) given in the rule 7-1-21 अष्टाभ्य औश्।
Note: The optionality of this rule is inferred from the rule 6-1-172 अष्टनो दीर्घात्‌।
    = अष्टाभिस् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    = अष्टाभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Can you spot a “शि”-आदेश: in the verses?
    Answer: “शि”-आदेश: is seen in the word कर्माणि (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “कर्मन्”, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    कर्मन् + शस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = कर्मन् + शि । By 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः – The affixes “जस्” and “शस्” get “शि” as the replacement when they follow a neuter अङ्गम्। “शि” gets सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-42 शि सर्वनामस्थानम्।
    = कर्मन् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कर्मान् + इ । By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ।
    = कर्माणि । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।
