Gita Press translation – Vasudeva observed: Indeed there is no fear to you, O gentle one, from this girl as the incorporeal voice (from heaven) has conveyed (to you). I shall (accordingly) make over (to you) her sons, from whom fear has arisen in you. (54) Śrī Śuka continued: Kaṁsa, who knew the truthfulness of Vasudeva’s words, ceased from killing Devakī (his own cousin). Applauding him, Vasudeva too reached home full of delight.(55)”

समर्पयिष्ये is a causative form derived from the धातुः √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६ or ऋ गतौ ३.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च – The affix “णिच्” is used after a root, when the operation of a causer – such as the operation of directing – is to be expressed. “णिच्” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः
= ऋ + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
= ऋ पुक् + इ । By 7-3-36 अर्त्तिह्रीव्लीरीक्नूयीक्ष्माय्यातां पुङ्णौ, the augment पुक् is added to the roots √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. ५५९) and to a root ending in a आकार: when the causative affix “णि” follows. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “पुक्”-आगम: joins at the end of the अङ्गम् “ऋ”।
Note: The उकार: in “पुक्” is उच्चारणार्थ: (for pronunciation only.)
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च – When a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its “इक्”-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases:
i) The अङ्गम् ends in a “पुक्”-आगमः।
or
ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

“अर्पि” gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

As per 1-3-74 णिचश्च, the धातु: “अर्पि” is उभयपदी। Here it has taken a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः।

3-3-13 लृट् शेषे च – With or without the presence of a क्रियार्था क्रिया (an action meant or intended for another action), the affix लृँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “इट्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “इट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of the letter “अ” which is not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter).

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

“सम्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

  1. Questions:

    1. In the last verse of which chapter of the गीता has √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?
    Answer: √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the last verse of the following chapters of the गीता –
    एषा ब्राह्मी स्थितिः पार्थ नैनां प्राप्य विमुह्यति |
    स्थित्वास्यामन्तकालेऽपि ब्रह्मनिर्वाणमृच्छति || 2-72||

    भोक्तारं यज्ञतपसां सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम्‌ |
    सुहृदं सर्वभूतानां ज्ञात्वा मां शान्तिमृच्छति || 5-29||

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    ऋ + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = ऋ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऋ + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = ऋ + शप् + तिप् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌। शप् which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
    = ऋ + अ + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऋच्छ + अ + ति । By 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्था..। When followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the verbal roots “√पा (पा पाने १. १०७४), √घ्रा (घ्रा गन्धोपादाने १. १०७५), √ध्मा (ध्मा शब्दाग्निसंयोगयोः १. १०७६), √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७), √म्ना (म्ना अभ्यासे १. १०७८ ), √दा (दाण् दाने १. १०७९), √दृश् (दृशिर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३), √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६), √सृ (सृ गतौ १. १०८५), √शद् (शद्ऌँ शातने १. ९९१, ६. १६४) and √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०, ६. १६३)” get “पिब, जिघ्र, धम, तिष्ठ, मन, यच्छ, पश्य, ऋच्छ, धौ, शीय and सीद” as replacements respectively.
    = ऋच्छति । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    Note: ऋच्छति can also be derived from the धातु: √ऋ (ऋछँ गतीन्द्रियप्रलयमूर्तिभावेशु, धातु-पाठः # ६.१६) as follows:
    The ending अकार: of “ऋछँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। And by 6-1-73 छे च, the ऋकार: of “ऋछ्” takes the “तुँक्”-आगम:। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “तुँक्”-आगम: joins after the ऋकार:। The उकार: in “तुँक्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and the ending ककार: of “तुँक्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। So now we have “ऋत्छ्”
    ऋत्छ् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = ऋत्छ् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऋत्छ् + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = ऋत्छ् + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऋत्छ् + श + ति । By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
    = ऋत्छ् + अ + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ऋच्छति । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः।

    2. Where has लुँट् been used in the commentary?
    Answer: लुँट् has been used in the commentary in the form हन्ता derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २). The विवक्षा is लुँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.
3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।
By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter. Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.
By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

    3. Where has the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन been used in the verses?
    Answer: The meaning of the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन is as follows:
When 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् and 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च are simultaneously applicable in the situation where a लिँट् affix follows a धातु: that has ऋकार: as the penultimate letter, 1-2-5 (even though an earlier rule in the अष्टाध्यायी) shall prevail over 7-3-86.
Note: This वार्त्तिकम् is required only in the case where a ऋकार: is the उपधा (penultimate letter) of a धातु:। In the cases where a इकार: or उकार: is the उपधा of a धातु:, no वार्त्तिकम् is required because in these cases 1-2-5 is a नित्य-कार्यम् (it applies regardless of 7-3-86) and hence prevails as per the परिभाषा – पूर्वपरनित्यान्तरङ्गापवादानाम् उत्तरोत्तरं बलीय:।

    This वार्त्तिकम् has been used in the form निववृते derived from the धातुः √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १.
By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच्, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः। By the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन, 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् applies which in turn allows 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च। Note: If 7-3-86 (along with 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः) would apply first, then we would have a संयोग: preceding the “ए”-प्रत्यय: and hence 1-2-5 could not be applied.

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Can you spot a “श”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?
    Answer: “श”-प्रत्यय: has been used in the form प्राविशत्‌ derived from the धातुः √विश् (तुदादि-गणः, विशँ प्रवेशने, धातु-पाठः # ६.
By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः – The श-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the तुदादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.
    Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the “श”-प्रत्यय: becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having a ङकारः as an इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the इकार: (of the अङ्गम् “विश्”) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    5. Can you spot a “यासुट्”-आगम: in the commentary?
    Answer: “यासुट्”-आगम: in the commentary is seen in the form भवेयु: derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १).
By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-108 झेर्जुस्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “जुस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-2-80 अतो येयः, when “यास्” of a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows an अङ्गम् ending in a अकारः, then it is substituted by “इय्”।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I will concentrate on studying grammar.” Paraphrase this to “I will fix my mind on the study of grammar.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “अध्ययन” for “study” and use (a लृँट् form of) √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६ or ऋ गतौ ३. १७) in the causative for “to fix on.”

    Easy questions:

    1. In the verses, can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which ends in a चकार: (letter “च्”)?
Answer: A प्रातिपदिकम् which ends in a चकार: is seen in the word वाक् (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) derived from the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “वाच्”
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……………।
Now “वाच्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-30 चोः कुः, the पदान्त-चकारः gets the क-वर्गः consonant as a replacement.

    2. In which word in the verses has the निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition rule) 4-1-10 न षट्स्वस्रादिभ्यः been used?
    Answer: The निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition rule) 4-1-10 न षट्स्वस्रादिभ्यः has been used in the verses in the form स्वसु: (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “स्वसृ”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)। 4-1-5 ऋन्नेभ्यो ङीप्‌ would have applied to “स्वसृ” but it is stopped by the निषेध-सूत्रम् 4-1-10 न षट्स्वस्रादिभ्यः – “स्वसा तिस्रश्चतस्रश्च ननान्दा दुहिता तथा।याता मातेति सप्तैते स्वस्रादय उदाहृताः॥” The feminine affixes do not come after words that have the “षट्” designation and “स्वसृ” etc.
