Gita Press translation “Again (in her company) the (cowherd) women penetrated the forest (further) so long as moonlight was visible. Perceiving (however) the darkness had set in they returned from that (very) point. With their mind absorbed in Him, talking of Him, imitating His various activities, nay, identified with Him and singing His praises alone, the cowherd women did not recollect their own body, much less their homes.”

सस्मरुः is derived from the धातुः √स्मृ (स्मृ चिन्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १०८२)

In the धातु-पाठः, the स्मृ-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the स्मृ-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So स्मृ-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्, hence the प्रत्ययः is “झि”।

(1) स्मृ + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् , the affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.

(2) स्मृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) स्मृ + झि । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। By 3-4-115 लिट् च, a तिङ्-प्रत्यय: which comes in place of लिँट् gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore “झि” gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। This prevents 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ (which requires a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: to follow) from applying.

(4) स्मृ + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः, when they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – “तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”, “थ”, “मिप्”, “वस्” and “मस्” – are substituted by “णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”, “अ”, “णल्”, “व” and “म” respectively.
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(5) स्मृ स्मृ + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य , when लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः

(6) स्मर् स्मृ + उस् । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, a ऋवर्ण: of the अभ्यास: (reduplicate) takes the अकारादेश: when a प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

(7) स स्मृ + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः, of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

(8) स स्मर् + उस् । By 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, a अङ्गम् which begins with a संयोग: (conjunct consonant) and ends in a ऋकार: takes गुण: when followed by a लिँट् affix. (As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, the ending ऋकार: of the अङ्गम् takes गुण:।)

See question 2.

(9) सस्मरुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. In how many places has 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः been used in the गीता?
i. Only once in Chapter One
ii. Twice
iii. More than five times
iv. Never

2. Why is 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः required in step 8? Couldn’t we have just used 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – किदर्थमपीदं परत्वाण्णल्यपि भवति। रपरत्वम्। उपधावृद्धि:। Please explain. (Hint: Consider the example सस्मार।)

4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – संयोगादे: किम्। चक्रतु:। Please explain.

5. Where has the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन been used in the verse?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Kaikeyi remembered the two boons given by Dasaratha.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “वर” for “boon” and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “दत्त” for “given.”

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “इयँङ्”-आदेश: in the form स्त्रिय: (प्रातिपदिकम् “स्त्री”, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)?

2. The word तन्मय्य: used in the commentary is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “तन्मयी”। Why doesn’t 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः apply here?

  1. Questions:
    1. In how many places has 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः been used in the गीता?
    i. Only once in Chapter One
    ii. Twice
    iii. More than five times
    iv. Never
Answer: iv. Never. In the गीता, लिँट् is used only a few times in none of which 7-4-10 is used.

    2. Why is 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः required in step 8? Couldn’t we have just used 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः?
    Answer: 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः required in step 8 because “उस्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here as per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्। Hence 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – किदर्थमपीदं परत्वाण्णल्यपि भवति। रपरत्वम्। उपधावृद्धि:। Please explain. (Hint: Consider the example सस्मार।)
Answer: किदर्थमपीदम् (कित्-अर्थम् अपि इदम्) means that even though 7-4-10 serves its purpose (as in the example सस्मरुः) when the प्रत्यय: (like “उस्”) is कित् (as explained in answer 2 above), परत्वाण्णल्यपि (परत्वात् णलि अपि) भवति – means that since 7-4-10 is a later rule in the अष्टाध्यायी compared to 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति, it happens to apply even when the प्रत्यय: “णल्” (which is not a कित्) follows. And then 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः applies to do उपधावृद्धि:। Details in the derivation of सस्मार (लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्) are as follows:
    स्मृ + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = स्मृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्मृ + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = स्मृ + णल् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
    = स्मृ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्मृ स्मृ + अ । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः।
    = स्मर् स्मृ + अ । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = स स्मृ + अ । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = स स्मर् + अ । By 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = सस्मार । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, a penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

    4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – संयोगादे: किम्। चक्रतु:। Please explain.
Answer: संयोगादे: किम् means why संयोगादे: (a अङ्गम् which begins with a conjunct consonant) is used in 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः। The reason is to restrict the application of 7-4-10 only to those cases where a अङ्गम् begins with a संयोग: (conjunct consonant.) This makes sure that 7-4-10 does not apply in forms like चक्रतु:। In the form चक्रतु:, 7-4-10 does not apply even though the अङ्गम् ends in a ऋकार: because the अङ्गम् does NOT begin with a संयोग:।
    चक्रतु: is derived from the धातुः √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०)
    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, द्विवचनम्।
    कृ + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = कृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कृ + तस् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = कृ + अतुस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “अतुस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = कृ कृ + अतुस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    = कर् कृ + अतुस् । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = चर् कृ + अतुस् । By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः।
    = च कृ + अतुस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = चक्रतुस् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि। As explained above 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः does not apply.
    = चक्रतुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    5. Where has the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन been used in the verse?
    Answer: The meaning of the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन is as follows:
When 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् and 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च are simultaneously applicable in the situation where a लिँट् affix follows a धातु: that has ऋकार: as the penultimate letter, 1-2-5 (even though an earlier rule in the अष्टाध्यायी) shall prevail over 7-3-86.
Note: This वार्त्तिकम् is required only in the case where a ऋकार: is the उपधा (penultimate letter) of a धातु:। In the cases where a इकार: or उकार: is the उपधा of a धातु:, no वार्त्तिकम् is required because in these cases 1-2-5 is a नित्य-कार्यम् (it applies regardless of 7-3-86) and hence prevails as per the परिभाषा – पूर्वपरनित्यान्तरङ्गापवादानाम् उत्तरोत्तरं बलीय:।

    This वार्त्तिकम् has been used in the form निववृतुः derived from the धातुः √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२). The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    वृत् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = वृत् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = वृत् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = वृत् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = वृत् वृत् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = वर्त् वृत् + उस् । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = व वृत् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः। By the वार्त्तिकम् – ऋदुपधेभ्यो लिट: कित्त्वं गुणात्पूर्वविप्रतिषेधेन, 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् applies which in turn allows 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च। Note: If 7-3-86 (along with 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः) would apply first, then we would have a संयोग: preceding the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: and hence 1-2-5 could not be applied.
    = ववृतुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे।)
    नि + ववृतुः = निववृतुः।

    Note: √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२) is actually a आत्मनेपदी धातु:। With आत्मनेपदम्, the form would be निववृतिरे।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Kaikeyi remembered the two boons given by Dasaratha.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “वर” for “boon” and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “दत्त” for “given.”
    Answer: कैकेयी दशरथेन दत्तौ वरौ सस्मार।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “इयँङ्”-आदेश: in the form स्त्रिय: (प्रातिपदिकम् “स्त्री”, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)?
Answer: 6-4-79 स्त्रिया: is used for the “इयँङ्”-आदेश: in the form स्त्रिय:।
    स्त्री + जस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
    = स्त्री + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “जस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = स्त्र् इयँङ् + अस् । By 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः – There is a substitution of “इयँङ्” in place of the term “स्त्री” when followed by a प्रत्यय: beginning with a vowel. As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ईकार: in “स्त्री” is replaced by “इयँङ्”।
    = स्त्रिय् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्त्रिय: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. The word तन्मय्य: used in the commentary is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “तन्मयी”। Why doesn’t 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः apply here?
Answer: 6-1-105 दीर्घाज्जसि च blocks the application of 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः in the word तन्मय्य: used in the commentary.
    तन्मयी + जस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
    = तन्मयी + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “जस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = तन्मय्यस् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि । Note: 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः is blocked by 6-1-105 दीर्घाज्जसि च – The पूर्वसवर्णदीर्घः substitute (ordained by 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः) shall not take place when the “जस्” affix or a “इच्” letter (a letter belonging to the प्रत्याहार: “इच्”) follows a long vowel.
    = तन्मय्य: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
