Today we will look at the form आसिञ्चत् 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-22-25

Gita Press translation “Unable to bear separation from her, he shed tears again and again, and drenched with them his daughter’s looks, crying “My daughter, my darling!”

आसिञ्चत् is derived from the धातुः √सिच् (तुदादि-गणः, षिचँ क्षरणे, धातु-पाठः # ६.
The beginning षकार: of “षिचँ” takes the सकारादेश: as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः

The ending अकार: (which is an इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्) of “षिचँ” has स्वरित-स्वर:। Therefore, as per the सूत्रम् 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, the √सिच्-धातुः will take आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः when the fruit of the action (क्रियाफलम्) accrues to the doer (कर्त्रभिप्रायम् = कर्तृ-अभिप्रायम्)। In the remaining case – when the fruit of the action does not accrue to the doer – by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् – the √सिच्-धातुः will take परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः।
In reality though, this distinction of the fruit of the action accruing to the doer or not, is rarely honored in the language. So as a practical matter, a verbal root such as √सिच् will take either आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः or परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः regardless of whether the fruit of the action accrues to the doer or not. In short, √सिच्-धातुः will be उभयपदी। In this verse it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।

The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, therefore the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् , the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः, the श-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots of the तुदादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌

By 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम्, the eight verbal roots √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) #६. १७३) get the नुँम्-आगमः when श-प्रत्ययः follows. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the “नुँम्”-आगम: attaches after the last vowel (इकार:) of the अङ्गम् “सिच्”।

by 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the अट्-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the अट्-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम् ।

अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.

By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

“आङ्” (ending ङकार: in a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्) is the उपसर्गः (ref.

Questions:

1. Where has 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् (used in step 8 of this example) been used in the first fifteen verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?

2. Can you spot a place in the verse where the सन्धि: is आर्ष: (archaic – does not follow the rules of grammar)?

3. When the सम्बुद्धि-प्रत्यय: (vocative singular) is added to a स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् like “रमा” we get the form (हे) रमे। In the verse, the प्रातिपदिकम् “अम्बा” has been used with the सम्बुद्धि-प्रत्यय:। How did the form become (हे) अम्ब?

4. The सूत्रम् 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् (used in step 8 of this example) applies to eight verbal roots. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (which we have studied) which also applies to eight verbal roots?

5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – धातुग्रहणं किम्? Please explain.

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“(You) Instill courage in my heart.” १७०) for “to instill” and use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “धैर्य” for “courage.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः been used in the verse?

2. Can a spot a ऋकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the letter “ऋ”) in the verse?

  1. Questions:
    1. Where has 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् (used in step 8 of this example) been used in the first fifteen verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?
Answer: 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् has been used in the first fifteen verses of Chapter Four of the गीता in the form लिम्पन्ति derived from the धातुः √लिप् (लिपँ उपदेहे #६.
    Since the विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग, प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्ययः is “झि”।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

    2. Can you spot a place in the verse where the सन्धि: is आर्ष: (archaic – does not follow the rules of grammar)?
    Answer: The आर्ष: सन्धि: is between (हे) वत्से + इति। (Should have been वत्स इति and not वत्सेति)। 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम् has not been honored.
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य। After this 6-1-87 आद्गुणः should not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्। But in the verse, 6-1-87 has been applied in वत्सेति।

Answer: The form became (हे) अम्ब because of the सूत्रम् 7-3-107 अम्बाऽर्थनद्योर्ह्रस्वः, an अङ्गम् that has the meaning of अम्बा (mother) or ends in a term having the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा, gets substituted by a short vowel if सम्बुद्धि: (vocative singular affix) follows. The derivation of (हे) रमे and (हे) अम्ब is given below:

    = (हे) रमा + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………..।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………..। ‘सुँ’ gets सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
    =(हे) अम्ब + सुँ । By 7-3-107 अम्बाऽर्थनद्योर्ह्रस्वः । By the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending आकार: of ‘अम्बा’ gets replaced.
By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धेः।

    4. The सूत्रम् 7-1-59 शे मुचादीनाम् (used in step 8 of this example) applies to eight verbal roots. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (which we have studied) which also applies to eight verbal roots?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-74 शमामष्टानां दीर्घः श्यनि also applies only to eight verbal roots. The meaning of 7-3-74 is as follows – The eight verbal roots beginning with √शम् (शमुँ उपशमे ४. १०५) take a दीर्घादेश: (elongation) when followed by the श्यन्-प्रत्ययः।

    5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – धातुग्रहणं किम्? Please explain.
Answer: “धातुग्रहणं किम्? षट्” means why is “धातुः” used in the सूत्रम् 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः (there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः in the धातु-पाठः )। “धातुः” is used in 6-1-64 in order to prevent the षकारः of terms like षट् from changing into a सकारः। (षट् is not a धातु:)।

    Answer: 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः has been used in the form शिखाः । The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् is “शिखा” and the विवक्षा here is द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………..।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “शस्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयो: पूर्वसवर्ण:, when an अक् letter is followed by a vowel (अच्) of the first (nominative) or second (accusative) case then for the two of them (अक् + अच्) there is a single substitute which is the elongated form of the first member (the अक् letter.)

    2. Can a spot a ऋकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the letter “ऋ”) in the verse?
Answer: A ऋकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् used in this verse is “दुहितृ” in the form दुहितुः। The विवक्षा here is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् ।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………..।
The ङकार: gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः causes it to disappear. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः along with 8-2-24 रात् सस्य।
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः ।
