Today we will look at the form विध्यति 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb11-28-28.

Gita Press translation “(Just) as a disease in men sprouts again and again, if treated improperly, and causes much pain, so does the mind whose passions and (the latencies of) Karma to which they are traceable have not been burnt and which has conceived an attachment for all (wealth, sons, wife and so on) bring about the fall of one who has not attained perfection in Yoga (wisdom).”

विध्यति is derived from the धातुः √व्यध् (दिवादि-गणः, व्यधँ ताडने, धातु-पाठः # ४.

The ending अकारः (which is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्) of “व्यधँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus the √व्यध्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √व्यध्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √व्यध्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्, the श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌

By 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च, the verbal roots √ग्रह (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ४) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) when followed by an affix which is a कित् or a ङित्।
(Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “श्यन्” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-1-16 to apply.)
See question 2.

By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च, when a सम्प्रसारणम् is followed by a अच् (vowel), there is a single replacement (in place of both the सम्प्रसारणम् and the following अच्) of the prior letter (the सम्प्रसारणम्)।

Questions:

1. Can you spot सम्प्रसारणम् in a सुबन्तं पदम् in Chapter Five of the गीता?

2. Why did only the यकार: (and not the वकार:) of the अङ्गम् “व्यध्” take सम्प्रसारणम् in step 7?

3. Why didn’t the ऋकारः in the word नृणाम् get elongated as per the सूत्रम् 6-4-3 नामि?

4. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ apply in the form कुयोगिनम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “कुयोगिन्”, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Plants don’t sprout in the desert.” Use the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “ओषधि” for “plant” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “इरिण” for “desert.” Use a verbal root from the verse for “to sprout.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The army commander pierced the enemies with arrows.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “सेनानी” for “army commander.”

Easy Questions:

1. In how many places has 6-1-113 अतो रोरप्लुतादप्लुते been used in the verse?

2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get the “नुँम्”-आगम: in the form प्ररोहन् (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्ररोहत्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)। (Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् “प्ररोहत्” ends in the “शतृँ”-प्रत्यय:)।

  1. Questions:

    1. Can you spot सम्प्रसारणम् in a सुबन्तं पदम् in Chapter Five of the गीता?
    Answer: सम्प्रसारणम् is seen in the form शुनि, प्रातिपदिकम् “श्वन्”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।
    Steps are as follows:
    श्वन् + ङि । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………..
    श्वन् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The अङ्गम् “श्वन्” gets भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
6-4-133 श्वयुवमघोनामतद्धिते – The अन् ending श्वन्, युवन् and मघवन्, which have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, take सम्प्रसारणम् when followed by an affix which is not a तद्धितः1-1-45 इग्यणः सम्प्रसारणम् – The इक् letter that is ordained in the place of a यण् letter gets the designation सम्प्रसारणम्।
6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च, when a सम्प्रसारणम् is followed by a अच् (vowel), there is a single replacement (in place of both the सम्प्रसारणम् and the following अच्) of the prior letter (the सम्प्रसारणम्)।

    2. Why did only the यकार: (and not the वकार:) of the अङ्गम् “व्यध्” take सम्प्रसारणम् in step 7?
Answer: If we did सम्प्रसारणम् for the वकार: first and made it a उकारः, then we could do सम्प्रसारणम् to the यकारः also and make it an इकारः, which would mean that there would be no application for 6-1-37 न सम्प्रसारणे सम्प्रसारणम्। The fact that पाणिनिः has composed 6-1-37, means that it cannot be a rule that has no application at all. So the composing of 6-1-37 itself is a ज्ञापकः (indication given by पाणिनि:) that the last यण् (in this case the यकार:) should take सम्प्रसारणम् first and then the prior यण् (in this case the वकार:) will not take सम्प्रसारणम्। This is the only logical way to make 6-1-37 useful.

    3. Why didn’t the ऋकारः in the word नृणाम् get elongated as per the सूत्रम् 6-4-3 नामि?
Answer: The ऋकारः in the word नृणाम् did not get elongated as per the सूत्रम् 6-4-3 नामि because of the सूत्रम् 6-4-6 नृ च। The purpose of 6-4-6 नृ च is to bring in the optionality of not elongating the ending vowel of the अङ्गम् “नृ” when “नाम्” follows.
By 7-1-54 ह्रस्वनद्यापो नुट्, the affix “आम्” takes the augment नुँट् when it follows a प्रातिपदिकम् which either ends in a short vowel or has the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा or ends in the feminine affix “आप्”। By the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the नुँट्-आगम: joins at the beginning of “आम्”।
    = नॄनाम् or नृनाम् । By 6-4-6 नृ च, the ऋकारः of “नृ” is elongated optionally when followed by the affix “नाम्”
    = नॄणाम् or नृणाम् । By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1 रषाभ्यां नो णः समानपदे) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम्, णकारः shall be ordained in the place of the नकारः after the vowel ऋ also (along-side the रेफः and षकारः)।

    4. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ apply in the form कुयोगिनम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “कुयोगिन्”, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ did not apply in the form कुयोगिनम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “कुयोगिन्”, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) because of the नियम-सूत्रम् 6-4-12 इन्हन्पूषार्यम्णां शौ, the lengthening (ordained by 6-4-8) of the penultimate letter of terms ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् should be done only when the शि-प्रत्यय: follows, not when followed by other सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes.

Answer: 6-1-113 अतो रोरप्लुतादप्लुते is used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between:
    (1) आमयः, असाधुचिकित्सितः
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
    आमय + उ + असाधुचिकित्सितः | By 6-1-113 अतो रोरप्लुतादप्लुते, when रुँ is preceded by “अ”, and is followed by “अ”, the रुँ is substituted by “उ”

    2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get the “नुँम्”-आगम: in the form प्ररोहन् (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्ररोहत्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)। (Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् “प्ररोहत्” ends in the “शतृँ”-प्रत्यय:)।
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः was used to get the “नुँम्”-आगम: in the form प्ररोहन् (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्ररोहत्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

। “प्ररोहत्” is a उगित् (since the ऋकार: in “शतृँ” is an इत्)।
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. The “सुँ”-प्रत्यय: has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य ।
सकार-लोपः by
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, the संयोगान्तपदम् “प्ररोहन्त्” takes लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (तकार:) of the पदम् will take लोपः। After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम् ।
