Today we will look at the form अनुमोदते 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb10-60-45.

Translation “O Parīkṣit! He, who for his part, sings, or hears recounted, or rejoices over the inimitable exploits performed by Śrī Kṛṣṇa – who is the (supreme) Cause of the evolution, continuance and dissolution of the universe – attains (loving) devotion to the almighty Lord, the Bestower of Liberation.”

मोदते is derived from the धातुः √मुद् (मुदँ हर्षे १.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √मुद् has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the दकार:। This इत् letter has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √मुद्-धातुः will get आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So मुद्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “त”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “त” as the substitute for the लकारः। “त” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 7-3-86 पुगन्‍तलघूपधस्‍य च, when a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its इक्-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases: i) The अङ्गम् ends in a पुक्-आगमः। or ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।

Note: “अनु” has been used as a उपसर्ग:। – ref.

Questions:

1. Where has 3-4-100 इतश्च been used in the verse?

१०९२) belongs to the भ्वादि-गणः। Then how did it take “श्नु” (instead of the expected default “शप्”) as the गण-विकरण-प्रत्यय: in the form शृणोति used in this verse?

3. Which धातु: has been used in the form “गायति”?

4. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I very much like these flowers.” Paraphrase this to “These flowers are very much pleasing unto me.” Use the अव्ययम् “भृशम्” for “very much” and the धातु: “रुच्” (रुचँ दीप्तावभिप्रीतौ च १. ८४७) for “to please.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with अस्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् for “unto me.”

Advanced Question:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अटावितौ। On this the तत्त्वबोधिनी comments – ‘अकार उच्चारणार्थ’ इति तु नोक्तं, लिडादिवैलक्षण्यसंपादनाय तस्यावश्यवक्तव्यत्वात्। Please explain.

Easy Questions:

1. Derive the form

2. Can you spot four places in the verse where 6-1-77 इको यणचि has been used?

  1. 1. Where has 3-4-100 इतश्च been used in the verse?

    = भू + शप् + यास् त् 3-1-68, शप् which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113

१०९२) belongs to the भ्वादि-गणः। Then how did it take “श्नु” (instead of the expected default “शप्”) as the गण-विकरण-प्रत्यय: in the form शृणोति used in this verse?

    Answer: √श्रु has taken the श्नु-प्रत्ययः by 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च । The श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२), when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Simultaneously, “श्रु” takes the substitution “शृ”।
    Note: This सूत्रम् is an अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।

    3. Which धातु: has been used in the form “गायति”?

    4. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा?

Answer: 1-4-10 ह्रस्वं लघु – A short vowel gets the designation “लघु”। But if the short vowel is followed by a conjunct consonant then it will get the गुरु-सञ्ज्ञा (and not the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा) by संयोगे गुरु 1-4-11.

Answer: The सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says “अटावितौ” which means that the अकार: as well as the टकार: of the लँट्-प्रत्यय: has the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। It doesn’t say that the अकार: is only उच्चारणार्थ:। The reason for this is that the अकार: in लँट् is essential (अवश्यवक्तव्य:) for distinguishing (वैलक्षण्यसंपादनाय) लँट् from लिँट्, लुँट् etc. So the अकार: does have a purpose beyond simply facilitating pronunciation.

    Easy Questions:

    1. Derive the form

    Answer:
7-1-20, 1-1-55
6-4-8 applies since शि has सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-42

    2. Can you spot four places in the verse where 6-1-77 इको यणचि has been used?

    Answer: 1.
