Today we will look at the form अपश्यत् 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-24-46.

Gita Press translation “He perceived the Lord, his own Self, as present in all living beings, and all living beings in the Lord, His own Self.”

अपश्यत् is derived from the धातुः √दृश् (भ्वादि-गणः, दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे , धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the √दृश्-धातुः has “इर्” as an इत्। (Note: “इर्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the वार्त्तिकम् “इर इत्सञ्ज्ञा वाच्या।”) The इकार: in “इर्” has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the √दृश्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √दृश्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √दृश्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् , the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः – When followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the verbal roots “√पा, √घ्रा, √ध्मा, √स्था, √म्ना, √दाण्, √दृश्, √ऋ, √सृ, √शद् and √सद्” get “पिब, जिघ्र, धम, तिष्ठ, मन, यच्छ, पश्य, ऋच्छ, धौ, शीय and सीद” as replacements respectively.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of the letter अ which not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

by 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the अट्-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the अट्-आगमः before the अङ्गम् ।

अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

  1. 1. Where is the form “अपश्यत्” used in the गीता?

    2. Where is the सूत्रम् 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः used in the verse?

7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, the neuter bases that end in a झल् letter or an अच् (vowel) get the नुँम् augment, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः।

    3. Why did the सूत्रम् 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य च अधातोः not apply in the form भगवन्तम्?

Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य च अधातोः applies only in the case where the अङ्गम् is followed by the सुँ affix which is not सम्बुद्धिः। But in form भगवन्तम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) the affix अम् (and not सुँ) has been used.

    4. Why did the सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः not apply in the form आत्मनि?

Answer: Because of 6-4-137 न संयोगाद्वमन्तात्। The अकारः of अन् does not take लोपः (as ordained by 6-4-134), when it follows a conjunct that has वकारः or मकारः as its last member. In “आत्मन् (= आत्म् अन्)”, prior to the “अन्” there is a conjunct ending in a मकार:। Hence 6-4-137 blocked 6-4-134.

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The teacher saw one defect in my answer.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “दोष” for “defect” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “उत्तर” for “answer.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who gives up desire attains peace.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “काम” for “desire”, the verbal root √त्यज् (त्यजँ हानौ १. ११४१) for “to give up” and the verbal root √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६) for “to attain.”

= सर्वभूतेषु (8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः – The letter स् is replaced by the cerebral ष् when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (क्, ख्, ग्, घ्, ङ्)। This substitution only takes place if the स् is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)
